Horror Movie Night
Join Matt, Scott and Kyle each week as they suffer through horror films both forgotten and beloved. The trio capture the excitement and the disappointment of renting movies in the 80’s and 90’s. For every surprising thrill like American Gothic the trio suffer through there's 10 disappointing flops like Terror Toons. The show combines the nostalgia of renting videos with a snarky comedic blend that will make you feel sentimental while simultaneously putting a smile on your face. So dust off your VCR, make some popcorn and check behind every door because it’s… Horror Movie Night.

Goosebumps (2015)
Happy Halloween from your boys in HMN! Another year, another kid-friendly horror movie discussion, because if there’s one day that’s for the kids, it’s a day where they’re encouraged to dress up like serial killers, and we love that for them. This year, we crack open GOOSEBUMPS (2015), which has a pretty solid concept (RL Stine’s manuscripts hold the actual monsters they’re written about) marred by a ton of mediocre CGI and Jack Black’s oddest vocal affectation. Regardless, we love GB’s in this household so we can’t be too mad about watching this one...
Creature of the Black Lagoon (1954)
It may be getting chilly outside, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to let you forget to STAY OUT OF THE DAMN WATER. Somehow, we have finally made our way backwards through the Creature trilogy, ending with this week’s discussion of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954). It’s just a really good movie, don’t expect us to talk bad about our pal Creature… The only thing he’s in danger of is drowning in compliments (and bathing beauties, apparently).

Ghosthouse (1988)
Do you love the Evil Dead series? Of course you do - but are you a big enough fan to know and love Evil Dead 3? No, we’re not talking about Army of Darkness, we’re talking about the Italian Evil Dead 3, Umberto Lenzi’s GHOSTHOUSE (1988)! The connections to Sam Raimi’s classic are admittedly hanging on by a thread here, more or less just that both take place in haunted houses. This one shares more DNA with Poltergeist when you think about it, and it even has a possessed clown doll if that’s what you’re into. Quick parenting tip, don’t steal dolls from corpses and gift them to your child...
Halloween 5 The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
It’s October and Scott’s pick this week, so why not torment his cohosts with what some would call the worst of the Halloween franchise? They are demonstrably wrong, and the guys are going to change some hearts and minds by singing the praises of HALLOWEEN 5: THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1989). Ok, well maybe not all of the guys, but Scott’s going to try his best to convince Matt and Kyle that this one has an unfair reputation, especially when there are some real stingers in the series after part 5. It’s got the Tina trying to save her...
Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)
It's officially the month of Halloween and we are kicking it off with Matt diving into Poltergeist II: The Other Side. This long awaited sequel was viewed as a disappointment when released; has it gotten better over 40 years? How has it's depictions of indigenous people aged? Is that worm moment still great? Listen and find out!!

House II The Second Story (1987)
We round out Listener Submitted Month with another part 2, this one featuring a lot more elder abuse (it’s ok, the great-great-grandpa is kind of an immortal corpse) and a lot less butt stuff. HOUSE ll: THE SECOND STORY (1987) decides to not pick up where the first movie left off and instead focus on yuppies living in the gaudiest Aztec-themed house you may ever see. There’s a crystal skull that can be used for time travel, a six-shooter-wielding skeleton named Slim, and the star of the film, a caterpillar-dog. It’s heavy on the comedy and fantasy, with the ti...
Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999)
Listener Submitted Month continues with a film about an evil genie obsessed with granting nefarious wishes to his victims' butts. Seriously! WISHMASTER 2 (1999) has two different rectum-centric deaths, which may not seem like a lot on paper, but really add up in a 90-minute gorefest. A group of inept thieves accidentally release the titular djinn, who goes back to his old song and dance of offering wishes that people take without considering that they may end up pooping casino tokens. It’s really something to behold.

Triangle (2009)
Listener Submitted Month continues with the time-loop slasher film TRIANGLE. When this was released in 2009 Matt and Scott watched it for Reddit Horror Club to mixed results but neither followed up with it for 15 years. Will they like it more or less this time around? Is it Kyle's first watch or his tenth? Does this feel familiar? Is this De Ja Vu?

Green Room (2016)
We kick off Listener Submitted Month with Green Room. This punk rock horror revenge film is a masterclass of suspense, violence and standing up against fascism, so obviously it was totally up our alley! While moments made us yell out loud, it also captivated us and lead to a deep conversation about indie filmmaking, pacing and music.

Cry_Wolf (2006)
Do you miss the days of AIM chatrooms, razor-thin eyebrows and Jon Bon Jovi’s failed acting career? If so, we’ve got a long-forgotten gem for you this week, 2005’s CRY_WOLF! Full of twists, turns, and irritating character decisions, this is perfect for the movie watcher that wants a little sprinkle of slasher in their game of internet Clue. It’s not a good movie by any stretch, but the nostalgia factor kind of helps the watch feel like less of a slog. Get ready for an all-nighter, your urban legend paper is due at 9am tomorrow…

Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
It takes a lot to spook the HMN boys, but the sound of a little toe-bell ringing is forever going on the list of sounds we hope to never hear in real life. THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (2016) is celebrating its tenth anniversary so we can finally discuss it on the show! There are a ton of ways that “naked lady on a slab” could’ve been handled poorly, but against all odds, the team behind this one made the titular character ominous and totally non-sexual while being disrobed and motionless for the entirety of its runtime. This is how yo...
Seed of Chucky (2004)
Pervy little killer dolls are no strangers to the show, but what if those little freaks reproduced sexually and their poor kid was sold to Criss Angel? Scary stuff! SEED OF CHUCKY (2004) is both surprisingly ahead of its time AND somehow horribly tacky and gross for its time (and worse 22 years later). If you ever wondered what Chucky working his Stretch Armstrong in silhouette looked like, you’re in luck because he jerks off in this movie and that’s actually one of the less offensive scenes on display. Anyone got a towel?

Island Claws (1980)
It’s still summer and that means you’re not safe in the water yet! This week, the island boys are going crab hunting with ISLAND CLAWS (1980), and film about what happens when capitalism allows people with money to dump radioactive waste wherever they want. And yes, we realize this same thing happened in KILLER CROCODILE - we’re trying to make a point here. The titular monster is (kind of) worth wading through all the character development because damn, who doesn’t want to watch a 10-foot-tall crustacean use its 15-foot claws to murder some random dudes with torches...
The Void (2016)
Are you sick of people being stuck in buildings with vinyl flooring and concrete block walls? Well too bad, cuz we’ve got another batch of poor souls fighting off a death cult and Lovecraftian monsters in this week’s pick, THE VOID (2016). This one just turned 10, so we’re celebrating with a rewatch and a fresh perspective on Astron-6 movies. Is it an entirely new concept? Of course not, but it packs a body horror punch and has incredible low-budget practical effects so we all walked away happy. The same can’t be said for the characters in the film...
Orca (1977)
That’s right, MORE killer animal content but this time, but this time we get Richard Harris on a pretty obvious bender throughout the movie shoot. ORCA (1977) is a surprisingly competent and may we even say well-done entry to the the JAWS ripoff pantheon that doesn’t get as much discussion as we think it should so here we are. Where else are you going to see a smart aquatic mammal blow up an entire freaking power plant? It’s as awesome as it sounds, trust us.

Lake Placid (1999)
At this point, we’re basically “giant animals attack” movie connoisseurs so why not add to the pile with a turn-of-the-century horror comedy take on the genre? LAKE PLACID (1999) has a stacked cast and the legendary Stan Winston Studios doing sfx, but they seemingly forgot one key ingredient to make it all work - actual funny jokes. Oh well, we’re still here for some crocodile carnage, and we get a ton of it. Plus Betty White is in it!

Last Shift (2014)
It seems wild that confiscated items at a police station are underutilized trope in horror - think about all the weird stuff in evidence rooms, messing with it would lead to creepy stuff happening for sure. At least we have a gem of an indie horror like LAST SHIFT (2014) to show us what kind of trouble those cursed items could cause. You can’t help but feel bad for a rookie cop spending her first day (well, night, but you get the idea) on the job and being tormented by the ghosts of a murder cult. Police hazing is he...

Jaws the Revenge (1987)
Christmas in July PLUS killer animal PLUS Stay Out of the Damn Water? You know which HMN host picked this week’s movie… It’s a very Matt Kelly Summermas with the film that gave a franchise a sea burial, JAWS: THE REVENGE (1987)! It may not be a good movie, but it’s probably not the worst shark movie we’ve seen, and at least it’s got Michael Cain in it. If you like a little fish psychic in your killer fish plot, well boy howdy have we got the film for you!

Stepfather II (1989)
Daddy issues, you say? Well you’re in luck then, because we’re continuing our backwards trajectory through the evil-guy-your-mom-married franchise with STEPFATHER II: MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY (1989)! This one owes much of its watchability to Terry O’Quinn as the titular bad bonus dad, but let’s not forget we have Meg Foster and Caroline Williams doing some heavy lifting as well! Jonathan Brandis also chews some scenery as a cool skateboarding preteen who is totally relatable or something. Wanna get hitched? Hope you don’t mind it’s TIL DEATH!

Dog Soldiers (2002)
One way to avoid getting eaten by reptiles is to spend a soggy night in the Scottish highlands…. trying to avoid getting eaten by werewolves. DOG SOLDIERS (2002) is a well-loved cult classic and we somehow went 11 years without discussing it directly so it was about time that was rectified. The wolves look great, the pacing is awesome, there are buckets of gore (and so, SO many bullets), and there’s a ton of dry British humor - what more could you ask for? Besides not being werewolf food, of course.

Killer Crocodile (1989)
More killer animals this week, now with added radioactive waste! We’re heading to the tropics to investigate rumors of a KILLER CROCODILE (1989) and likely lose some limbs in the process. This Italian mess really shines when the ADR is off, the acting is over the top, and the croc animatronic is front and center (which is, thankfully, pretty often). The plot beats aren’t anything you haven’t seen before, but man, that croc looks awesome when it’s chowing down on people who didn’t take Matt’s advise to STAY OUT OF THE DAMN WATER.
Demonwarp (1988)
Summertime calls for a trip out to the woods for some good old-fashioned Bigfoot hunting! You wouldn’t think a movie called DEMONWARP (1988) would be about killer sasquatch, and on a certain level you’re not wrong - calling this a Bigfoot movie is a simplification of the other absurd stuff that goes on here. There are also zombies and aliens, and yes it’s all supposed to connect. Is it a good movie? Absolutely not, but it does star George Kennedy. Take that as you will.

Underworld (2003)
Fresh from our trip to the hot, dry outback, we return to the city where it always rains and find ourselves in the middle of a centuries-long war between vampires and werewolves. UNDERWORLD (2003) is the story of a hot lady vampire who hasn’t been happy in a long and the werewolf who also never smiles but somehow melts her icy heart without a single drop of on-screen chemistry. Tale as old as time! Who wouldn’t want to be the middle of a vampire/werewolf love sandwich?

Razorback (1984)
Matt’s unquenchable need to see giant animals absolutely destroy unwitting humans has brought us to the lands of bloomin' onions and deer that hop on two legs (aka kangaroos). We’re deep in the ozploitation outback with RAZORBACK (1984), a nasty little film about a massive boar with a tendency to rip shanties and their occupants to pieces. Who’s to blame the boar, though? They say people taste like bacon.

The House on Sorority Row (1983)
This week Kyle gives us a real deep cut slasher film with 1983's The House on Sorority Row. This movie is more famous for it's name and the 2009 remake than any of it's plot line but it's full of crazy dialogue, a clown killer and really strange kills. Basically, it's perfect for our show!

Silent Hill (2006)
Last week, we braved radioactive waste in Tromaville, only to find ourselves up against underground coal seam fires in SILENT HILL (2006). Now, none of us played the video game, so our enjoyment of this one is subjective, but if you look past the absurd runtime and some poorly-aging CGI, there’s a lot of fun to be had in a little pocket dimension town in West Virginia. And there’s a cult, what more could you ask for? Maybe not being stuck in Silent Hill forever, but that might not be an option once you find your way there…

Class of Nuke Em High Part 2 Subhumanoid Meltdown (1991)
The end of the school year is closing in so we’re headed back to Tromaville High for another round of toxic tomfoolery with CLASS OF NUKE EM HIGH 2: SUBHUMANOID MELTDOWN (1991). An obvious favorite in the Kelly household, this excursion finds a himbo reporter falling in love with a science experiment and the entire school battling it out with a squirrel kaiju - seriously! You know we love Troma round these parts, and this week isn’t some sort of turnaround on that sentiment. Let’s get slimy!

Blade (1998)
We’ve been holding onto this one for a decade and finally decided to run a stake through the heart of our dreams of a new addition to the franchise, so it’s finally time to ice skate uphill with the baddest vampire hunter of all time, BLADE (1998)! Now, it might be the nostalgia talking, but this movie has aged like a fine, blood-red wine. Is it overly long? Yes! Is it a lot of martial arts fighting and gun violence? Also yes! Is the CGI kind of terrible? Ok we get it, it’s not winning any awards but da...

Dolly Dearest (1991)
You’re not gonna believe this, but we’re talking killer dolls this week and it’s not a Matt pick. After years of will-they-won’t-they, we are finally discussing DOLLY DEAREST (1991), brought to us all by Kyle of all people. It’s got a possessed doll, it’s got an ancient curse, it’s got bad acting, it’s got Rip Torn as an archeologist - some might say it’s a perfect movie for this show. Why we took over a decade to tackle it is anyone’s guess, but here we are and we may not make it out of this...
The Sect (1991)
Do you think we’ve watched enough Argento this spring? If you said no, then you’re in luck, because we have another dose of Italian weirdness with 1991’s THE SECT (aka THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER)! Co-written and produced by Dario Argento, this also taps another HMN favorite, Michele Saovi, as director - and as an added bonus, stars Kelly Curtis. If you knew that Jamie Lee had a sister who was also an actor, then you’re smarter than us. It’s a Satanic cult movie, you know we had a good time with this one. Ready to join up?

976-Evil (1988)
It’s the late 80s and Robert frickin' Englund is coming out with his directorial debut, there’s definitely no way this movie can be boring, right? Well… may we point out the slog that is 976-EVIL (1988)? While there are some fun scenes to be had, the movie is kind of a bland retread of EVILSPEAK but with the computer swapped for a demonic phone service, and no badass sword. You do still get some fun quips with your evisceration though, so it’s not a total wash!

Suspiria (1977)
It’s our 550th episode, time to class up this joint a little with a genre favorite - Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA (1977)! Who doesn’t love a little giallo action about ballerinas and witches, with a side of maggots and some barbed wire tumbling? The plot may be inscrutable at times, but what it lacks in logic it more than makes up for in style. Come on, let’s dance!

Crimson Peak (2015)
Based on its title, it may be inferred that CRIMSON PEAK (2015) is about vampires - the logic is sound, if somewhat flawed. This was Kyle’s logic when he chose it for us to discuss, as he had never seen it before, so he was quite perplexed when the bloodsucking never happened and ghosts are floating around instead. Can you imagine how sick this movie would be if it WAS about vampires, though?
