Biggest children’s play park opened at Penns Place
The Mayor, Councillor Chris Paige, opened the new and accessible play park, which is alongside the Taro Leisure Centre.
It’s one of 7 in the area managed by Petersfield Town Council and they have plans - details as yet unannounced - to upgrade more when funds allow.

A promise was made and kept after battling against the odds
Paul Heath made a promise to himself to complete a bike ride just to prove that he could do it. Following on from a three month battle after being rushed to intensive care with sepsis in Easter 2024, progress has been gradual. But nevertheless, his determination kept him going.
Shine Radio, interviewed him last April and promised to come back after he completed his challenge.

Winton House a historic and vital asset for the community
Winton House on the High Street, home to many charities in town and the Community Cafe, recently had an expensive refurbishment to the Grade 2 listed building.
Robert Venables, 86, is the President of Winton House and he oversaw an extensive refurbishment there 15 years ago, that actually took a decade to complete, not least because so much was needed, but also an unexpected storm damaged the Victorian stained glass windows.
Robert explains how it was all done and why the building, used for and by the community, needs cherishing.

Giant Christmas Charity Market
Brothers Jeremy and Martin Holmes have been organising this charity market for 24 years (with another at Easter).
It’s at the Festival Hall on Saturday 6 December and there are around 60 stalls, raising money for charities.
Speaking to Mike Waddington, Jeremy Holmes tells us more about his involvement and what they are aiming to achieve.

A Petworth gallery celebrates the magic of photojournalist Jane Bown
Photojournalist for The Observer newspaper Jane Bown (1925 - 2014) is being celebrated at the Newlands House Gallery in Petworth.
You might not know her name but you will recognise her black and white portrait photographs of well known people at this new exhibition, Jane Bown: Play Shadow.
It is 100 years since Jane Bown's birth and she has snapped everyone there was too in her six decades at The Observer. Sitters include the late Queen Elizabeth II to Samuel Beckett, from the Beatles to Robert Redford, from Bjork to Mick Jagger.

The Big Give campaign doubles donations to local charities - for one week only!
The Big Give is a national charity that doubles the amount local charities raise but in one week only - Tuesday 2 December at noon, until Tuesday 9 December at noon.
Mike Waddington speaks to one of the organisations gearing up for the week; local family support organisation, Home Start Butser.
Nicola Winter, the Manager, explains how they need to raise £40,000 over the week - that's a fifth of what they need over the year.
Organisations taking part have easy ways to donate in that week and whatever is given is doubled.

The Town Criers raise their voice for Petersfield
Faye Thompson is Petersfield’’s Town Crier, an unpaid position that promotes Petersfield and the kind of people we are.
She has been at many ceremonies, crying out proclamations as well as other less formal events like talking to schools. Martin, her husband is the Deputy Town Crier, who is looking into the history of the role.
The brightly coloured livery and bell ringing attract attention when they're out and about.

The Festival Hall is alive with entertainment
The Petersfield Festival Hall is thriving says venues manager Sean Ridley. In a recent catch up interview he tells Kirsty Meredith that his aim is to ensure the historic venue remains a place for all the community as well as becoming a destination venue for larger organisations. There's been a recent upgrading of the stage rigging system to ensure that the theatre is fit for use for many years to come.

Train to be a bee keeper!
Petersfield and District Beekeeping Association is almost 100 years old and produces a great product local people like the provenance of as well as its taste.
Steve Reid from the Association talks to Mike Waddington about the training they offer (in February, with equipment provided) about keeping, swarming and crops.
Steve explains what is involved - including the right equipment and avoiding the inevitable stings.
He explains how they rehomed a swarm from Petersfield's Physic Garden (having made a home in their rhubarb forcer!) and why the pastime is ethical and sustainable.

The Big Dig Reports big findings in Petersfield
Liss Archeology and Petersfield Area Historical Society reported finds from last July and August's Big Dig, at the Museum on Saturday 22 November after some evaluation of the finds.
Thirty people heard how they had found prehistoric flints - consistent with the the ancient presence on the Heath.
They await confirmation of a Roman presence in the pottery report.
They also discovered some old significant buildings demolished centuries ago under the Spain and at High Meadow.

Museum gifts price cut for whole of December
All 100 memorial bricks have now been sold at the Museum and Art Gallery and part of their 'thank you Petersfield' for Christmas, is to reduce entry fees by 50% (under 18s go free) for the whole month of December - with lots to see and do, and Santa appearing there on 22 December, the day of the 'Todler Takeover;.

The Housing Crisis - ABRI Housing association developments making great progress.
ABRI - the housing association - are building over 100 homes in Petersfield and more in other areas like Horndean.
They say the housing crisis means they need to build, using 'brownfield sites' like at the top of Lavant Street, by the railway station.
After a delay, they now have planning permission for Drum Court, on the Spain, to be rebuilt providing 21 flats, with work to start in Spring 2026.

Running for recovery & mental health awareness in the hospitality industry
We followed local chef Matt Rothwell from Thomas Lord Pub & Dining in West Meon on his incredible fundraising challenge to support mental health in hospitality.
Inspired by his own journey, Matt set off to run 500k over 5 days to raise money for The Burnt Chef Project

Koa, the therapy dog working in Manhattan schools and hospitals
Short but sweet, this episode of Dogs with Jobs was recorded in New York City, on the run up to Thanksgiving holiday.
Koa is a Rhodesian Ridgeback - not a breed you see in therapy work too often.
His owner, Andy Honda, is a Rhodesian Ridgeback fan, and chose Koa as a future running partner. They live a couple of blocks from Central Park in Manhattan, New York City.
Andy explains how Koa ended up working in the therapy field with Dogs with Jobs presenter, Kate Fairweather.

Petersfield Spring Festival is making a comeback
After taking a year out, Ben Errey and Steve Jacob of Petersfield Community Events have announced that the Spring Festival is returning in 2026. For the first time in their 13 year history, they are asking the people of the Petersphere for help to make this free community event happen. Volunteers keep the shine on Petersfield’s Crown Jewel
The Heath and Pond are often called the 'jewel in Petersfield’s crown', with its abundant wildlife (including badgers at secret locations.)
The Friends of Petersfield Heath run work parties of volunteers to carry out conservation work agreed with the Town Council, which includes woven ‘dead hedges’.
The Work Party organiser is the Vice-chair Jordan Bleach and he explains the work they do.
With 20 - 30 volunteers from primary school age to people in their 80s, they can achieve a great deal and more volunteers are always welcome.

It’s our job but very pleased to be recognised says Fire station
Winners of the Petersfield Contribution to the Community Award, Watch Manager Stuart Jarrett, himself a fire fighter for almost 20 years, is pleased on behalf of the 12 crew and on-call Petersfield fire fighters.
Speaking to Mike Waddington at the Fire Station, Stuart talks about why the award is important to them. He explains the on-call system.
They had a quiet bonfire weekend which he sees as a sign of being safety aware. He does remind people not to take batteries (to use in toys) out of smoke alarms at Christmas

Petersfield Lions launch their Christmas Appeal
Mary Putnam, past President of Petersfield Lions appeals for good condition toys and games to be donated for the Christmas fair at the Festival Hall on 6 December (for the Queen Alexandra Hospital).
Donations can be left at Winton House on the High Street.
As well as supporting this cause Mary speaks about their envelop drop and Tesco street Collection which goes to other local charities - like the Kings Arms, the CAB, Home Start Butser, Fitzroy and the Foodbank.
Speaking to Mike Waddington, she says Petersfield is very generous and that small gifts...
