Speaker: Jen Pan, Stanford University

The speaker examines how the Chinese regime controls information online and how the government engages in censorship. The government uses different types of filters to control what content is viewed by the public and what content is removed and unseen. "Internet commentators" are prominent players in media fabrication as they post social media comments as if they are those of the general public, when in reality they are paid comments. Through this strategic distraction, the Chinese government has control of choosing what content to view audience members and checks for algorithms dealing...

From collaborative software to generative AI, computing technologies are redefining the way we work, communicate and collaborate. Yet with the growing complexities of computing platforms, it becomes increasingly challenging to foresee their impacts on human behavior, leading to not only poor user experience but also problematic applications that mirror and amplify societal issues. How can we better understand machine behavior and machine-mediated user behavior over computing platforms? How can we build applications that align with our needs and values with emerging computing technologies? My research aims to answer these questions through...

The Case for Learned Index Structures
Speaker: Alex Beutel and Ed Chi, Google

Indexes are models: a B-Tree-Index can be seen as a model to map a key to the position of a record within a sorted array, a Hash-Index as a model to map a key to a position of a record within an unsorted array, and a BitMap-Index as a model to indicate if a data record exists or not. Neuromorphic Chips: Addressing the Nanostransistor Challenge by Combining Analog Computation with Digital Communication
Speaker: Kwabena Boahen, Stanford University

Uploaded 06-04-17

As transistors shrink to nanoscale dimensions, trapped electrons--blocking "lanes" of electron traffic--are making it difficult for digital computers to work. In stark contrast, the brain works fine with single-lane nanoscale devices that are intermittently blocked (ion channels). Conjecturing that it achieves error-tolerance by combining analog dendritic computation with digital axonal communication, neuromorphic engineers (neuromorphs) began emulating dendrites with subthreshold analog circuits and axons with asynchronous digital circuits...

Stanford Seminar - Embodied Intelligence for Extreme Environments
Stanford Seminar - Embodied Intelligence for Extreme Environments episode artwork
Yesterday at 9:00 PM

February 9, 2024
Paul Glick, JPL Robotics

Extreme environments penalize the sensing, actuation, computation, and communication that robotic systems rely upon. Compounding this challenge is the fact that these remote locations are often some of the least mapped areas on and beyond our planet. Structured compliance offers a pathway for robots to adapt to their environment at the mechanical level while preserving the strength to support payload mass and forceful interactions. This theme is explored across projects that include gripping in space, exploration of coral reefs, data acquisition under ice, and a cold-operable robotic arm.

Interventions to reduce misinformation sharing have been a major focus in recent years. Developing "content-neutral" interventions that do not require specific fact-checks or warnings related to individual false claims is particularly important in developing scalable solutions. Here, we provide the first evaluations of a content-neutral intervention to reduce misinformation sharing that are conducted at scale in the field. Specifically, across two large-scale on-platform randomized control trials, one on Meta's Facebook and the other on Twitter, we find that simple messages reminding people to think about accuracy--delivered to large numbers of users...
