Ahmad ibn Rustah Isfahani, better known as Ibn Rusta was a 10th-century Persian explorer and geographer born in Rosta district, Isfahan, Persia. He wrote a geographical compendium known as Book of Precious Records, based on first hand accounts and his own travels. His information on the non-Islamic peoples of Europe and Inner Asia makes him a useful source for these obscure regions and for the prehistory of the Turks and other steppe peoples.

By the end of his reign, Genghis Khan was the most powerful man in history. As he oversaw his vast empire, there was one final enemy he found himself facing - his own mortality. Here we have the letter Genghis wrote to the famous Taoist monk Qiu Chuji urging him to cross the vast distance to come to his court, as the Supreme Khan wished to discover the secret of "preserving life" - immortality.

A Roman account of a legendary rebellion.

Differing accounts relay us his origins; supposedly born in Thrace (modern day Bulgaria) to a tribe called the Maedi, legendary Gladiator-cum-general Sparcatus was captured and enslaved some time before 73 BC. A heavyweight gladiator; he, along with around seventy other slaves threw off their chains and raised an army - roaming across Italy for three long years and entering into Roman legend.

This is the Greco-Roman historian Appian's version of that story.

Discovered in 2013 by Egyptologist Pierre Tallet and his team and called "the greatest discovery in Egypt in the 21st century", "The Diary of Merer" gives us an incredible account of the one of the processes behind the construction of the most incredible building in human history - The Great Pyramid of Khufu. The oldest written papyrus yet discovered, it takes the form of a daily logbook of an 'Inspector Merer' whose job is to transport limestone from the nearby Tura quarry to use as cladding for the pyramids in the construction's final stages.

Whilst in prison at the end of the Thirteenth Century Italian writer Rustichello da Pisa began to hear extraordinary tales from his cell mate. That man turned out to be a Venetian merchant named Marco Polo. The tales that Polo then narrated to Rustichello eventually became the ‘Book of the Marvels of the World’.
