Twenty-five years ago, Cumberland’s Congregational Church became one of Maine’s earliest “Open and Affirming” congregations — a bold, love-driven stand for LGBTQ+ inclusion long before same-sex marriage was legal. Pioneered by the state’s first openly gay minister, Diane Bennekamper, the church’s commitment has drawn generations of members and transformed its community. Today, rainbow crosswalks and welcoming rainbow doors echo their enduring message: faith means love for all — even as the journey toward full inclusion continues.
