Lincoln saw it in a mirror. Catherine the Great shot at it. One teacher lost nineteen jobs to it, and she never saw it once. This week we’re talking doppelgängers: the doubles that show up right before death, the folklore creatures that steal your face,  the science of meeting yourself, and real modern stories of people who came face to face with… themselves. Plus a smiling double, a possible love jinn, and whether Nicolas Cage is really a vampire.

Have you ever met your double? Tell us. We might need a part two.

Witch, con artist, or cold-blooded killer? This week, we’re telling the twisted tale of Mary Bateman, the infamous Yorkshire Witch.

In the early 1800s, Mary made a name for herself as a fortune teller and healer, but wherever she went, strange circumstances seemed to follow.

From a magical chicken known as the Prophet Hen of Leeds to mysterious letters from oracles, supernatural remedies, and poisoned pudding, Mary’s schemes grew increasingly bizarre—and eventually deadly. But even her execution wasn’t the end of her strange story.

When you hire a mortician, you're trusting them with the most vulnerable moment of your life: your dead body. This week the Darlings dig into what happens when that trust goes sideways. Jeannette opens with the case of Dale Omsberg, a Lincoln City mortician who stacked bodies like cords of wood, but was only  sentenced to 30 days behind bars. Then we hop across the pond with Hayley, where English mortician Robert Bush was convicted of startlingly similar crimes — except he walked away with 20 years. Same betrayal, wildly different justice. And to close it out, we head back to the ear...

We’re heading to Nevada!  First, we dive into the eerie legends of Water Babies—mysterious creatures whose cries are said to lure the curious to their fate. Then we dig into the story of the Lovelock Giants, the red-haired giants supposedly discovered inside a Nevada cave and the very real archaeological finds that helped fuel the legend. And finally we turn our gaze upward for the Flying Space Clams, one of Nevada’s strangest UFO encounters, involving bizarre clam-like creatures touching down in the desert and soaring through the sky.

What happens when a detective runs out of leads? Sometimes, they turn to psychics for help in solving a crime.

In the 1970s and ’80s, California psychic Armand Marcotte worked alongside police and detectives on countless investigations, offering clues he claimed to receive through his psychic abilities to channel the victims who have crossed over, explore past lives, and use help from those beyond the grave to gather clues to help solve mysteries. In this episode, we explore the cases, the detectives who sought his help, and the mysterious connection between the psychic and the det...

Three women. Three scandals. One uncomfortable truth: people rarely thank the woman who blows the whistle.

This week, the sisters dive into the stories of Martha Mitchell, the outspoken wife of Nixon’s Attorney General who became public enemy number one after speaking out during Watergate; Linda Tripp, the Pentagon employee forever demonized for recording phone calls that helped expose the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal; and Karen Silkwood, a union activist and lab worker who was simply trying to do her job safely before uncovering something far more disturbing.

All three were mocked, discredited, and painted as vi...

This week the Spooky Darlings cover a case of lazy, racist, and downright crooked police work. A woman is murdered at a Jacksonville hotel on a Sunday morning. Ninety minutes later, police have their suspect, a fifteen-year-old boy on his way to get a job application. His name is Brenton Butler, and his story, documented in the Oscar-winning film Murder on a Sunday Morning, is one of the most infuriating wrongful arrest cases in American history. Racial profiling, a coerced confession, zero physical evidence, and two public defenders who simply refused to let the system win. This week on...

Long before it was a party game, humans were obsessed with talking to the dead. This week the Darlings trace the strange history of spirit communication from Shang Dynasty oracle bones to the Fox sisters' famous knocking act, from Roman ring-and-alphabet divination to the planchette-wielding Spiritualists of the 1800s. Then there's the board itself: the 1890 Baltimore patent, outselling Monopoly in year one, and why The Exorcist changed everything.
