When Aluminum Wiring Goes Wrong: What could happen?

Aluminum wiring was once installed in many homes but later proved to be a mistake when used inside walls. The main problem is that aluminum used for outlets and switches can overheat, creating a fire risk.

By contrast, aluminum utility and service entrance wiring is designed for that purpose and is generally safe. The danger lies specifically with older aluminum conductors running through a home's interior to receptacles and switches.
