Episode 121: Celebrating Gram Parsons, the Cosmic American Original
This week, the GXO Podcast temporarily pauses its multi-episode exploration of The History of Music Sampling to celebrate one of the most influential, complicated and often misunderstood figures in modern popular music: Gram Parsons.
Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, Parsons helped redefine what country music could sound like and who could listen to it. Long before “Americana” became a widely recognized genre, he was building his own vision of Cosmic American Music, a boundary-breaking blend of country, rock, folk, gospel, soul and rhythm and blues.   His influence can be heard acros...

The mystery deepens in Part Two of The GXO Samples Show, the continuing three-part investigation into the origins, evolution, and enduring power of music sampling.

Welcome to The GXO Samples Show Part One!

We’re delighted you’re joining us for our first few baby steps towards uncovering the mystery of Music Samples.

What are they? And where do them come from?

This multi part expose podcast explores how the visual arts of the 19th century, in the form of both montage and collage, went on to inspire a new language and aesthetic for music in the 20th century and beyond.

From modernist composer Charles Ives’ backwards looking work of futurism in his seminal 1906 piece Central Park I...

118 The 1984 Show: Dystopia Revisited
#119
10/12/2026

At the conclusion of World War II, noted British journalist George Orwell wrote his prophetic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. This dark dystopian tale foretells a future for humanity polarized by the victors of the six year long global conflict Orwell had reported on; the communist Soviet block and the allied group of nations led by the United States and Great Britain.

In choosing a title for his novel, Orwell simply inverted the final two digits of the year in which he completed his book, 1948.

And so 1948 became 1984

In 1973, on t...

09/27/2026

Amidst the persistent haze of the “anything goes”, hedonistic Free Love swinging 60s, with its culture of excess and casual debauchery, it was easy to lose sight of the fact that James (Not Jimbo) Morrison was suffering, very publicly, from an incurable disease.

Alcoholism.

Even his closest friends and associates, members of The Doors, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, didn’t recognize at the time that alcohol was slowly killing their friend right before their eyes. Night after night, town after town, amidst the backdrop of skewed innocence and the newly...

Robyn Hitchcock. The man who never left the Summer of Love, a 14-year-old spirit trapped in a six-decade odyssey of sound. While others, high priests of the sonic psychedelic prose revolution, Lennon, Dylan, Barrett, eventually moved on to other pastures, Robyn Hitchcock stayed to cultivate the gardens they'd abandoned.

In this premiere episode of our latest series, A Renaissance of Robyn: Hitchcock Pt 1, we pull back the shades and let the sun shine in on the man who became the physical manifestation of 1967 itself. From the fruits of whimsy to the deep, tangled roots of genius, we...

#83
01/25/2026

Tanner Burns Is Bringing Crooning Back!

But what, might you ask, is Crooning?

Crooning is a smooth, intimate style of singing that originated in the 1920s. The crooning style was made possible by widespread access to electricity and improvements made to microphones that picked up quieter sounds and a wider range of frequencies than ever before.

This dominant popular vocal style coincided with the advent of radio broadcasting and electrical recording. Before widespread use of microphones, singers had to project their voices to the very back of the theater, making for a loud vocal...
