Ep. 54 - Heed Her Voice
#54

After 90 years, Sarah finally has a son. Abraham names him Isaac, the name G-d gave him before he was born, and circumcises him on the eighth day. It should be the happiest moment in the household. Instead, people are talking. Sarah spent a night in King Abimelech’s palace, and less than a year later a woman who could never conceive is holding a baby. The cynics of the generation have a theory about who the father really is.

Rabbi Epstein says the gossips stumbled onto something true. Sarah answers the doubters on the day Isaac is we...

Ep. 53 - What did you see, that you did this thing?
#53
09/30/2026

Abraham and Sarah arrive in Gerar, and Abraham tells everyone Sarah is his sister. She is, technically: his half-sister. She is also his wife (and one of the 4 most beautiful women ever to live). So when King Abimelech hears there's an unmarried woman in town, he has her brought to his palace. That night G-d appears to Abimelech in a dream with a warning: give her back or you die. By morning the orifices of his entire household are sealed shut, and he summons Abraham with one question, “What did you see, that you did this thing?”

Abra...

Ep. 52 - A Grain of Truth
#52
09/17/2026

Abraham tells the people of Gerar that Sarah is his sister, the second time he's made this claim about her. King Abimelech then takes her into his house, and that night G-d comes to him in a dream with a warning: return her, or die. Abimelech wakes up to find his bodily orifices sealed shut, and he asks Abraham “what have you done to us?”

Rabbi Epstein and Tom dig into whether Abraham actually lied when he claimed Sarah was his sister. That question opens into a teaching from Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler on emet and...

Ep. 51 - Too Tired to Run
#51
09/04/2026

Lot is standing outside Sodom with two angels, just before the city burns, and they tell him to run for the mountains. He asks for an alternative: a nearby town named Zoar, close enough that he won't have to face the wilderness alone. G-d grants his request, sparing that city from being consumed in the destruction. Then the fire falls. Lot's wife looks back and is turned into a pillar of salt as four cities are turned to ash.

Lot's prayer for that small town to be spared gets answered. Abraham's prayer for Sodom...

Ep. 50 - Bring Them Out to Us
#50
08/21/2026

The angels have entered Sodom, and Lot has pulled them into his home despite the risk, in a city where sheltering a guest overnight is itself a crime. Rabbi Epstein and Tom pick up as the meal Lot serves turns out to be matzah, and the timing is not incidental. This is Passover night, centuries before the Exodus, the night the Torah ties to the very possibility of freedom. Lot has spent years chasing what Sodom offers and could never walk away from it on his own. Now G-d is about to take the choice out of his hands...

Ep. 49 - Sitting at Sodom's Gate
#49
08/10/2026

Sodom is a city under a death sentence. Abraham has just finished negotiating with G-d over how many righteous people it would take to save it. Now the angels sent to carry out that judgment are walking through the gates and encounter Lot, Abraham's nephew, a man who chose to live in a place like this. Rabbi Epstein and Tom pick up the story right as the angels arrive, and the questions start piling up fast. Why come at night, in a city where sheltering a guest overnight is itself a punishable offense? And why is Lot the one...

Ep. 48 - An Exercise in Humility
#48
07/29/2026

What is a righteous life worth? Abraham puts that question to G-d directly, negotiating on behalf of a city he owes nothing to and testing how many good people it takes to redeem the many. He opens at fifty people, and stops at nine. Rabbi Epstein explores why that number carries significance far beyond this one episode, and what it reveals about the kind of presence a small group of committed people can have in a world that seems too far gone to save.

Along the way, the conversation turns to what humility actually looks like when...

Ep. 47 - Why Bother Praying?
#47
07/10/2026

This episode opens as the three guests rise from Avraham's table and set out toward Sodom. G-d then tells Avraham about the impending destruction of Sodom. Avraham prays to save the city, but his prayer will not work. G-d knows this before Avraham opens his mouth.

Minutes later, Lot asks G-d for a much smaller favor and gets an immediate yes. A better man's prayer gets refused. A weaker man's prayer gets answered on the spot. Rabbi Epstein brings a teaching from the Dubno Maggid that flips this around entirely, and it reshapes how...

Ep. 46 - Sarah’s Laugh
#46
06/24/2026

Last episode, Avraham sent a messenger to bring his guests water. Everything else, he did himself. This episode picks up where that left off, as Avraham runs to prepare a full meal for the three guests waiting under his tree.

The errand takes a strange detour first. The calves meant for the meal run away, and Avraham chases them into a cave. Inside are Adam and Eve, buried in the same ground that will one day hold himself, Sarah, Yitzchak, Rivka, Yaakov, and Leah. We now know this as Me'aras HaMachpela.

<...

Ep. 45 - The Messenger Problem
#45
06/16/2026

Avraham rushes to host three strangers and personally oversees every detail. Everything, that is, except the water. For that, he sends a messenger.

Rabbi Bentzi Epstein and Tom unpack a chain of cause and effect that stretches from Avraham's tent to the rock that Moshe struck, and from there to a question: when you delegate a mitzvah, does something get lost?

There is also a tree. One planted by Avraham for the shade of passing strangers. The same wood, centuries later, would be used to build the Mishkan, the...

Ep. 44 - Putting G-d on Hold
#44
05/27/2026

It's been three days since Avraham's circumcision. He is in pain, sweating in the midday heat, when G-d comes to visit him. Then three strangers appear in the distance, and Avraham runs toward them, brings them into his tent, and spends hours hosting them. G-d waits.

The question at the center of this episode is how that is anything other than a profound act of disrespect towards the Creator. Rabbi Epstein traces what Avraham’s actions actually mean.

Ep. 43 - The One-Time Mitzvah
#43
04/30/2026

Avraham has already passed nine of his ten tests, and G-d is standing in front of him with a covenant that will be stamped into the flesh of every Jewish male for the rest of history. The questions that come out of this moment are not small ones.

Why does the covenant take the form it does? Why does it happen at eight days old, before a child can consent or even understand? Why did Avraham himself wait so long, given that he understood the Torah long before Sinai? The answer to that last...

Ep. 42 - Walk Before Me and Be Perfect
#42
04/17/2026

Avram is 99 years old when Hashem appears to him with a new name for Himself, El Shaddai, and an interesting command: walk before Me and be perfect. Rabbi Epstein and Tom spend this episode unpacking what that actually asks of a person, and why Rashi reads "walk before Me" as something more demanding than walking with G-d, and what separates Avram's path from Noach's.

The verse goes on to talk about circumcision, and Rabbi Epstein relates the Talmud's exchange between Rabbi Akiva and a Roman about whether a perfect Creator would make an imperfect...

Pesach Special: The Inner Exodus
#41
03/27/2026

The Haggadah tells us that if we don't mention three things on Seder night, we haven't fulfilled the mitzvah: Pesach, Matzah, and Maror. But why reduce one of the most layered nights of the Jewish year to three items? What about freedom, slavery, our relationship with G-d?

In this special Passover episode, Rabbi Epstein sits down with Tom for a wide-ranging conversation about what the Seder is actually doing, and why those three symbols carry more weight than they might seem. The order matters: we start with Pesach (freedom), move through Matzah (the transition), and begin...

Ep. 40 - Where have you come from, and where are you going?
#40
03/16/2026

Sarai had a plan. Unable to conceive, she tells Avram to take her maidservant Hagar as a concubine. Whatever child comes from this union will be hers. She picks Hagar deliberately, having spent ten years watching her, trusting her above all the others. Then Hagar gets pregnant on the first try, and the whole thing unravels almost immediately.

This episode works through one of the Torah's most painfully human sequences: Hagar's sudden contempt for her mistress, Sarai's furious accusation against Avram, and Avram's hands-off response that sends Hagar fleeing into the desert. Rabbi Epstein...

Ep. 39 - Sarai's Gambit
#39
02/26/2026

Sarai, the matriarch of the Jewish people, makes a stunning statement to her husband: take Hagar, my maidservant, as a concubine. Whatever child comes from this will be mine. This episode unpacks one of the most emotionally layered moments in Genesis. Why does G-d communicate this plan through Sarai rather than directly to Avram? Why does Avram need convincing?

What follows is a layered conversation about how this whole arrangement comes to be, and why G-d chooses to communicate it through Sarai rather than speak directly to Avram. The Talmud draws a striking conclusion from this...

Ep. 38 - Locking in for Eternity
#38
02/11/2026

G-d has just promised Abraham children and a land to inherit. And then Abraham has the audacity to ask G-d: "How will I know that I will inherit it?" How could he ask that? He fears that his descendants will do something to lose everything. Abraham wants to ensure this doesn't happen.

G-d answers with a covenant. He tells Abraham to bring specific animals and cut them in half, placing the pieces opposite each other. This was how treaties were made in the ancient world.

Then, as the sun...

Ep. 37 - Looking Down at the Stars
#37
01/28/2026

Abraham just defeated four kings. He refused their wealth. He should feel victorious. Instead, he's terrified. G-d appears to him in a vision and says: "Fear not, Abraham. I am a shield for you. Your reward is very great." But Abraham isn't comforted. What good is any reward if he has no child to pass it to? Everything will go to Eliezer, his servant from Damascus.

G-d takes him outside. "Look at the heavens and count the stars, if you can." The simple reading: Abraham looks up at the night sky. But the Hebrew...

Ep. 36 - Not a Thread
#36
01/15/2026

Abraham comes back from the battle. The king of Sodom is waiting with an offer: keep all the wealth, just return the people.

Abraham won't touch any of it. Not a thread, not a shoe strap. He refuses to let anyone claim they made him rich. But someone else is there too. Melchizedek, king of Salem. He's actually Shem, Noah's son, and he's the high priest. He brings out bread and wine and offers Abraham a blessing. But he makes a critical mistake. He blesses Abraham first, before blessing G-d, and this costs him...

Ep. 35 - Abraham's Impossible War
#35
01/02/2026

Four mighty kings wage war against five. They crush armies, wipe out giants, conquer cities. When the fighting ends, Lot has been taken captive.

A fugitive named Og brings Abraham the news. Abraham has hundreds of students in his study hall. He shuts it down and prepares for war. But when he asks the traditional pre-battle questions—Are you newly married? Built a house? Planted a vineyard? Afraid you've sinned?—every single student says yes. They all decline to fight.

Abraham heads into battle with just his servant Eliezer. Two men against the armies that defe...

Ep. 34 - Lot's Gamble
#34
12/19/2025

Abraham and Lot can't stay together anymore. Their shepherds are fighting. The land can't support both of them. It's time to separate.

But here's what makes this moment extraordinary: Abraham gives Lot first choice of where to settle. Left or right, you pick, and I'll take what's left. It's an act of incredible generosity from the elder to the younger, from uncle to nephew.

Lot surveys the land and sees the Jordan valley. Lush. Well-watered. Wealthy beyond imagination. It looks like the Garden of Eden. It looks like Egypt...

Ep. 33 - Famine, Faith, and Divine Silence: Abraham's Egyptian Descent
#33
12/04/2025

Abraham finally arrives in the land G-d promised him…and immediately faces famine. No rain. Dying animals. A starving community. This is G-d's idea of a blessing?

This is the world's first famine ever, and it happens precisely when Abraham reaches his destination.

Rabbi Epstein unpacks one of Abraham's most confusing tests: Should he stay in the land G-d explicitly told him to go to, or should he leave? The answer reveals a critical principle about reading G-d's instructions. Sometimes what G-d says and what G-d means require us to listen more ca...

Ep. 32 - The Illusion of Control: Abraham's Journey to Canaan
#32
11/23/2025

When G-d tells Abraham "Go for yourself from your land, from your relatives, and from your father's house to the land I will show you," there's a problem: Abraham doesn't know which direction to turn. Right or left? East or west? The text says G-d will "show" him the land - future tense - yet somehow Abraham knows exactly where to go.

This apparent contradiction opens up one of the most profound lessons in the Torah: the world we think we control is largely an illusion.

Rabbi Epstein reveals how Abraham already visited the Land...

Ep. 31 - Abraham's Training Ground
#31
11/13/2025

Abraham didn't become the father of the Jewish people in a single moment of faith. He was forged through ten tests—each one preparing him for the next, each one impossible to pass without the conditioning of those that came before.

These tests were a deliberate training program, building his spiritual muscle from test to test until he could face the ultimate challenge: the binding of Isaac. Like a boxer moving from featherweight to heavyweight, Abraham needed every previous test to survive the next one.

You'll discover why G-d let Abraham's brother perish in Nimrod's fu...

Ep. 30 - Heaven's Two Entrances
#30
10/21/2025

Judaism holds a view almost no other religion shares: you don't need to be Jewish to get to heaven. You just need to be a good person.

In this episode, Rabbi Bentzi Epstein explores the seven Noahide laws, a universal moral code given to all humanity. Six of these laws were handed to Adam at creation itself. The seventh came after the flood: don't eat a limb from a living animal. These seven laws open the gates of heaven to anyone, Jewish or not.
But if seven laws are enough, why would anyone choose 613? The answer...

Ep. 29 - The Idol Smasher
#29
09/18/2025

What turns the son of an idol-maker into the father of monotheism? After 20 generations of humanity swinging between pure physicality and pure spirituality, one young man discovered the revolutionary truth: we're meant to merge both worlds together.

In this episode, Rabbi Bentzi Epstein reveals the dramatic story behind Abraham's first two life tests. Discover how a teenager's act of rebellion in his father's idol factory led to 13 years on the run from King Nimrod, and culminated in the ultimate showdown—a public trial by fire that would determine not just Abraham's fate, but the future of free wi...

Learn the fascinating details, such as how they planned to escape gravity and "float up" to fight the Almighty. Rabbi Epstein reveals the deeper meaning behind Lashon HaKodesh (the Holy Tongue) and how G-d’s response of creating multiple languages was the birth of tribalism, nationalism, and identity politics that still divide us 3,789 years later.

08/22/2025

Who were the 70 nations that would shape all of human history? In this episode, Rabbi Bentzi Epstein reveals the background of the 70 nations mentioned in Genesis Chapter 10. You'll discover why Nimrod, whose very name means "rebellion," became the world's first king and how he convinced an entire generation to join his uprising against the Almighty.

Ep. 26 - Wine Before Wheat
#26
08/08/2025

When Noah stepped off the Ark into a silent, barren world, his first act was planting a vineyard…not wheat. Was it a holy intention or a coping mechanism? In this episode, Rabbi Bentzi Epstein uncovers why the Torah calls this choice a debasement, and how one small act led to massive consequences for generations to come.

You’ll learn how this moment ties into the division of the post-Flood world between Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and how that geography still shapes civilization today. Plus, discover the surprising connection between Noah and the mitzvah of t...

Ep. 25 - A Promise Written with Light
#25
07/28/2025

Every rainbow carries a hidden message that ancient warriors would instantly recognize—but most of us miss it completely. When an archer surrenders, he turns his bow backwards, pointing it away from his enemy. The rainbow, Rabbi Bentzi Epstein reveals, is God doing exactly that.

In this episode, we dive into the aftermath of the flood when Noah's family made a surprising choice: they refused to have children. Discover why God had to make an unprecedented covenant to convince humanity to rebuild, and what that promise actually guarantees (hint: it's not what you think).

Ep. 24 - The Price of Strength
#24
07/16/2025

Uncover the mystical journey of human development that begins before birth. While in the womb, an angel teaches every soul the entire Torah, giving them perfect clarity and knowledge. But the moment they begin their journey into this world, that divine knowledge is erased with a gentle tap on the lips. It's why every baby enters the world crying—they've just lost cosmic understanding and entered a world of confusion.

You'll discover why the strongest people face the greatest challenges, how every relationship in this world mirrors our connection to God, and why teaching re...

Ep. 23 - The Great Disembarking
#23
06/20/2025

When God finally opens the ark's doors after the Great Flood subsides, something shocking happens: the women refuse to have children. Despite being the only humans left on Earth, Noah's family goes on a "baby strike," terrified that their offspring might repeat history's mistakes. Their reasoning? Even righteous Adam and Eve produced a world so wicked that God had to wash it away.

Rabbi Epstein uncovers the profound psychology behind this post-apocalyptic anxiety, exploring why the wives feared they couldn't control their children's choices—and how this reflects every parent's deepest concerns. But here's the twist: God ha...
