Bravo! Aaron Nola looks "pretty dang good" this spring.
Last Friday at 9:00 AM

We say it almost every episode in the spring: Don’t go crazy over spring training performances -- good or bad.

But Aaron Nola sure has looked good this spring. He pitched five scoreless innings for Team Italy in Wednesday night’s 9-1 victory over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Nola not only helped Italy go 4-0 in pool play, but he saved Team USA from potentially being eliminated from the tournament.

We talk a lot about Nola and his chances of bouncing back in 2026, Chase Utley’s induction onto the Phillies’ Wall of Fame and...

News broke on Monday night that the Phillies and Jesús Luzardo have agreed to a five-year, $135 million contract extension, keeping him in a Phillies uniform through at least 2031. The Phillies also have a $32.5 million club option for 2032. The Phillies Show’s very own Jim Salisbury was first with the contract details. (This is why you listen to the show, folks.) We break down the deal. What do we like? What don’t we like?

Simply the Best: Kyle Schwarber powers Team USA
03/09/2026

Kyle Schwarber reminded everybody on Saturday that he’s one of the most feared, most highly regarded hitters in baseball. He crushed a tie-breaking home run against Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic. Schwarber has hit fourth and first for Team USA in the team’s first two games. It got us thinking about his potential for enshrinement in Cooperstown, N.Y.

It’s “Best Week” by Manco & Manco Pizza! Manco’s is the Best of the Best, and every week throughout the season we pick our best Phillies players, performances and moments of the week.

Early signs from Phillies rotation
03/06/2026

If everybody does their thing, the Phillies’ rotation is the team’s strength in 2026.

There are questions, but the early performances from Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Andrew Painter and Taijuan Walker have been encouraging. And so has the work of Zack Wheeler.

We also discuss Jhoan Duran’s first spring appearance, Bryce Harper’s spring and the World Baseball Classic.

Andrew Painter’s spring debut: two innings of hope and promise
03/02/2026

Three years later, Andrew Painter delivered the goods.

He threw two scoreless innings on Sunday against the Yankees in his first Grapefruit League start in exactly three years. It’s been a long road back for Painter, who had Tommy John surgery in 2023. But in a 20-pitch effort against several quality big leaguers, Painter pounded the strike zone and got early contact. What to make of it?

What’s Zack Wheeler’s timeline to rejoin the rotation? What’s up with Aidan Miller’s back?

What We Want to See This Spring
02/19/2026

The Phillies will play their Grapefruit League opener on Saturday against the Blue Jays in Dunedin. They play their home opener on Sunday against the Pirates at BayCare Ballpark.

What do we want to see in the coming weeks? There’s a lot. Good things from Aaron Nola. Good things from Adolis García. A sense of what the lineup is going to be. Is it going to be Kyle Schwarber protecting Bryce Harper or vice versa? How about good things from Phillies prospects Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller.

Bryce Harper's still upset about Dave Dombrowski's "elite" comments
02/16/2026

Bryce Harper got to Clearwater, Florida, on Sunday. He spoke to reporters in the morning outside BayCare Ballpark.

He had a lot to say:

He talked about Dombrowski’s comments in October, when he wondered if Harper would be elite again or not. He said while he doesn’t need any motivation, the fact Dombrowski said what he said publicly bothered him. He talked about how the Phillies’ cleanup hitters need to step up. He talked about participating in the WBC. He talked about the Phillies’ chances to compete and more.

Harper mentioned the Phillies’ cleanup hi...

Beer and Baseball: Phillies release Nick Castellanos
02/13/2026

The Phillies couldn’t salvage their relationship with Nick Castellanos. They didn’t want to.

So, they released him on Thursday. The Phillies are eating the final $20 million of a five-year, $100 million contract. That’s how badly they wanted Castellanos to go away. We talked about the Phillies’ decision, why it took so long and Castellanos’ admission that he brought a beer into the visitors’ dugout in Miami in June. We get into everything that soured the Phillies on Castellanos, and vice versa.

Phillies are back: Zack Wheeler’s rib, Nick Castellanos’ locker
02/12/2026

Day 1 of Phillies spring training is in the books.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler talked about his recovery from thoracic outlet decompression surgery in September, which required the removal of the first rib near his right shoulder. Wheeler revealed that he kept the rib, and it’s sitting in a case in his closet at home!

Wheeler is missing a rib and Nick Castellanos is missing a locker in the Phillies’ clubhouse. He’s still on the 40-man roster, but he won’t be much longer.

Plus, the plan for Aidan Miller, Aaron Nola’s decision...

The Phillies top 5 storylines this spring
02/10/2026

Phillies pitchers and catchers have their first workout in Clearwater, Florida, on Wednesday.

What should we be watching this spring? Here are our top five storylines for the spring:

5. How does the bullpen set up after Phillies closer Jhoan Duran?
4. What is the team’s mindset following three straight years of disappointment? How do J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm feel knowing they were gone if the Phils had signed Bo Bichette?
3. How does Justin Crawford look this spring? There are legit concerns about the Phillies’ outfield production.
2. The Rotation. Is Zack Whee...

What should the Phillies’ Opening Day lineup be?
02/02/2026

Title: What will the Phillies’ Opening Day lineup be?

Opening Day is 52 days away with the Phillies hosting the Rangers on March 26 at Citizens Bank Park.

It’s never too early to talk about the Phils’ lineup.

Ruben, Jim and Todd not only try to predict Rob Thomson’s likely season-opening lineup, but they discuss what lineup they would like to see. Is it Trea Turner leading off? Is it Bryson Stott?

How about Bryce Harper?

We also share a few fun stories about reporter dust ups with coaches and play...

Who's the best? Phillies or Mets?
01/30/2026

The Phillies smoked the Mets in the NL East last year, winning the division by 13 games. But the Mets won the offseason, especially when they stunned the Phils and signed Bo Bichette.

So, who’s better?

We go position by position through the Phillies and Mets lineups, including the rotation and bullpen:

Catcher: Francisco Alvarez vs. J.T. Realmuto First base: Jorge Polanco vs. Bryce Harper Second base: Marcus Semien vs. Bryson Stott Third base: Bo Bichette vs. Alec Bohm Shortstop: Francisco Lindor vs. Trea Turner Left field: Carson Begne/Tyrone Taylor vs. Brandon Ma...

Bye Bye, Bader: Is the Phillies outfield really set?
01/27/2026

If you’ve been listening to the show the past several weeks, you know we’ve been saying Harrison Bader almost certainly wouldn’t be returning to the Phillies in 2026. Sure enough, he just agreed to a two-year, $20.5 million deal with the Giants.

So what’s the Phillies’ outfield going to be?

Is there any chance the Phils sign another outfielder before camp opens next month?

We discuss Bader, the Phillies’ outfield situation, remaining free agents on the market and non-roster invitees coming to camp.

01/23/2026

Dombrowski, Realmuto talk for first time since Bo Bichette "gut punch"
01/21/2026

What a week for the Phillies.

They went to sleep on Thursday thinking they were signing Bo Bichette, who stunningly signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets on Friday. The Phillies quickly improved their offer to J.T. Realmuto, who thought his Phillies career was over. But Realmuto is back, and Dave Dombrowski said he is “content” with where they are as a team.

Boo Bichette: Phillies stunned to lose star, J.T. Realmuto returns
01/17/2026

What the hell happened?

The Phillies offered Bo Bichette a seven-year, $200 million contract on Thursday. They thought they had him. Then – poof – he’s gone. Bichette stunned everybody in baseball, when he accepted a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets instead.

The Phillies followed the massive disappointment by signing J.T. Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million deal.

What happened with Bichette? What do we think about the Realmuto deal? What comes next?

Bo Bichette or J.T. Realmuto? Or could the Phillies land both?
01/15/2026

The Phillies’ pursuit of Bo Bichette is heating up.

They have talked at least twice this week, including Monday’s ballyhooed Zoom. The Phillies see a path to bringing Bichette to Philadelphia, but several obstacles remain. First, they must outbid the Dodgers, Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox and any “mystery” teams. Second, they must shed salary. That means trading Alec Bohm’s $10.2 million contract. That means finding an alternative for J.T. Realmuto.

But is there a way the Phillies could sign both?

We discuss all the angles in our latest episode.

Are the Phillies really going to sign Bo Bichette?
01/12/2026

They are having a virtual meeting on Monday with Bo Bichette. We discuss:

Why the Phillies jumped into the Bichette sweepstakes. The Phillies’ chances to sign Bichette, including the Phils’ top competition. What does this mean for J.T. Realmuto? What does this mean for Alec Bohm? What does this mean for the Phillies 2026 payroll?

Star Power: Don Mattingly, J.T. Realmuto and Bo Bichette
01/08/2026

The Phillies have hired Don Mattingly to be their bench coach in 2026.

We love the hire. But how does it help the Phillies? Well, of course, it could help their late-game decision making. But if you read between the lines, Phillies manager Rob Thomson hinted that Mattingly’s star power should bring increased credibility to the coaching staff. The Phillies are trying to tighten up things, and they believe Mattingly should help.

We dig into J.T. Realmuto’s free agency. We talk about the chance Bo Bichette signs with the Phillies, too.

Phillies bullpen, clubhouse shake up: Matt Strahm traded, J.T. Realmuto stalemate
#249
12/22/2025

The Phillies had a busy week last week:

They signed Adolis Garcia to a one-year, $10 million contract on Tuesday.Phillies assistant general manager Ani Kilambi was named Nationals GM on Wednesday. The Phils signed Brad Keller to a two-year, $22 million deal on Thursday. They traded Matt Strahm to the Royals on Friday for Jonathan Bowlan. They traded a Minor League prospect to the Diamondbacks on Friday for Kyle Backhus.

Why did the Phillies trade Strahm? It cleared payroll, for sure. But Strahm’s relationship with the Phillies had soured, too. What is the Phillies’ payroll situation right now...

What’s next for the Phillies? Is J.T. Realmuto coming back?

Center of Attention: Kyle Schwarber’s name is buzzing at the Winter Meetings

What’s happening with Kyle Schwarber’s free agency and more
#240
11/25/2025

If you thought the Phillies and Kyle Schwarber would sign a multiyear contract shortly after free agency started, think again.

We still think Schwarber will re-sign with the Phillies, but right now his agency is trying to maximize his value -- as they should. That means drawn-out negotiations, and maybe even a little frustration on the Phillies’ end. It’s rally no surprise.
