This past week in my life was very busy, as I had the great privilege of doing a major breakout for the TIME TO LEAD Conference at Cross Church. What does following Jesus actually look like—not just on Sunday, but in everyday life? Jesus never called us simply to believe in Him; He called us to follow Him, and that decision should shape every part of our lives. Today I want to give you four essentials of following Jesus—and then ask one very personal question: Do these four things describe my life?

While events began on Saturday, both Sunday and Monday were full as well. All was pointing to last Tuesday and Wednesday in Orlando, Florida. The summer season is completely different from the other seasons of the year. I was born on November 11, 1955. Do the math. I just turned 70. On December 6, 2025, less than one month after my 70th birthday, I ran and completed the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. After Jesus issued his call to follow him, he knew some were still clinging to their success in the world. This should not surprise us because even when one has followed Jesus for years, stepping into the world and its measurement for success is still tempting. In your workplace, what matters most? In your vocation, how is success measured? Let the world measure it as they may; some measures of success are acceptable. 

When you get hurt in your life, it impacts every segment of your life. It is really difficult to compartmentalize your hurt and lessen the experience of it. We don’t talk about our hurt aloud many times, but it is real. 

Hurt people, hurt people. Each of us has been the target of someone else’s personal hurt. They want to get us back for something we have not even done. All because they are striking out at us.
