Your Vote Can't Fix a Rigged System.

#139

America just held its midterms. On November 3rd, all 435 House seats, 33 or 34 Senate seats, and 36 governorships got decided — a genuinely enormous amount of machinery, and the honest question is what any of it actually changed for you. Because here's the uncomfortable part: replacing one group of parasites with another accomplishes nothing for the person standing in line at the grocery store.

The technicals are true. Everything after them is theater. The people who win are the people who were always going to win, and the people who lose are the ones who thought showing up to vote wa...

Why Should McDonald's Be Allowed to Exist?

#138

Last Monday at 11:00 AM

Whatever happened to the price on the sign?

There's a diner I used to eat at where the menu had a coffee ring laminated into the plastic, and every price was printed in ink — same number for me as for the guy on the next stool. That's what a price used to be. A fact.

McDonald's says AI does not set its menu prices, that franchisees set prices and the tools only recommend. A federal lawsuit filed in Chicago alleges the platform uses transaction data to set prices across thousands of independently owned restaurants. The wo...

Schopenhauer Was Right About Stupid People

#137

10/28/2026

Have you ever spent forty minutes explaining something to somebody who asked — and watched the whole thing land, clear as a bell — and then watched it evaporate about forty seconds later?

Arthur Schopenhauer said a man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills. It's the whole problem in just fourteen words.

Your preference isn't the product of your reasoning — your preference is the customer, and your reasoning is the fella in the back room writing the justification after the order's already been filled.

This is a piece about why th...

Grocery Prices Are A Lie. Here's Who Wrote It. — The Earnest Mann Show

#136

10/26/2026

You're standing in the aisle with two products in your hand and no idea they came out of the same building — here's who actually wrote that price tag.

Grocery prices didn't just drift upward. They were engineered. This episode walks through the machinery behind the price you pay at the register — the illusion of choice on the shelf, the packages that quietly shrink while the price holds, and the price tags that may not be the same for you as they are for the person behind you in line.

Along the way you'll meet Ray, who...

Data Centers Want Your Water. That's a Secret.

#135

10/21/2026

A warehouse near you drinks more water than the whole town — and won't tell you how much, because that number is a "trade secret."

There's a new kind of neighbor moving into counties across the country, and it doesn't look like a factory or a mall. It looks like nothing at all — a long gray building with no windows and a fence around it. What it does inside is drink. Water, and power, at a scale that would make the mill down the road look like a garden hose.

At a county planning meeting, an old...

Nobody Knows Why Sex With Gorillas Is Wrong. Cool.

#134

10/16/2026

This week: one question nobody wants to answer out loud — and why "it's obviously wrong" isn't an answer at all. We take the machinery apart: what consent actually requires, why harm is the hidden premise doing all the work, and the difference between knowing a verdict and being able to produce the reasoning behind it. A short exercise in thinking on purpose, for adults who'd rather understand a rule than just obey it. Until next time; this is no bullshit; earnestly honest, Earnest.

You Were Never Just Browsing. The Store Was Built To Trap You.

#133

10/12/2026

The store was designed before you walked in. Five manipulation tactics with industry names are doing the work on you every time you shop — the Gruen transfer, the decompression zone, the roach motel, confirm shaming, and drip pricing.

This episode names them, shows you what each one actually costs you, and makes one thing clear: you didn't fall for it. Somebody built it.

Sources referenced: the FTC staff report Bringing Dark Patterns to Light (Sept 2022); FTC v. Amazon.com — filed June 2023, dismissal denied May 2024, $2.5B settlement announced Sept 2025; researcher Harry Brignull's documentation of the roach mote...

You did everything right, that's why it feels so unfair.

Have you ever done everything they asked you to do and still ended up outside the room you helped build? I know that feeling.Twelve years at the same place. The one who trained the new hires, the one who came in on the Saturday nobody else would. Then a phone call on a Tuesday, fifteen minutes long, and a folder in front of them with a number on it.In this episode I name three workplace patterns, and none of them are about you: staffing levels set at the minimum that will still produce output, loyalty paid in...

Every App Is Built To Trick You. Here Are The 12 Tricks

#131

09/28/2026

Twelve design tricks that companies build into apps, websites and checkouts to get you to spend money you never meant to spend. Not theory, and not a lecture. Every one of them has a name, they're all here, and once you know the names you'll spot them coming before they cost you a dime. We go through bait and switch, confirm shaming, disguised ads, forced continuity, friend spam, hidden costs, misdirection, price comparison prevention, privacy zuckering, the roach motel, sneak into basket, and trick questions. Plus what India's consumer authority is now fining major platforms over, and the four...

Controlling Revolting Language; is Absolutely Revolting!

The Earnest Mann takes a sardonic look at the system — the private and governmental machinery that runs on propaganda, social engineering, and media manipulation to steer what we buy, believe, and obey. From corporate control to government overreach, we pull back the curtain on surveillance capitalism, marketing manipulation, consumer manipulation, and the dark patterns engineered into everyday life. We dig into the marketing psychology and consumer psychology behind it all — and what consumer behavior really tells us about mass manipulation. Along the way we talk financial education, financial history, economic collapse, and the wealth inequality that shapes the modern worl...
