What does it take to go from a public rental kart at K1 Speed to a racing program that includes a weekly meeting with a sports psychologist?

Sabrina and Dick sit down with Daniel Ramirez, a thirteen-year-old racer out of California who has built a self-review process most adults would envy.

They get into how Daniel and two separate coaches, one in the US, one based in Europe, break down his race footage every week and land on the same conclusions about what worked and what didn't.

They also talk about the jump...

Last Thursday at 6:00 PM

Max Verstappen won the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in the rain at Sepang, the first Formula 1 victory for Red Bull Ford Powertrains. It is not what Dick, Joe Saward, and Sabrina spent this race review on.

After a long rain delay, a software glitch on the formation lap left Sabrina with a question she could not shake: if software can step in between a driver and the car, how do you trust what you are watching? All three agreed Formula 1 did not look its best in Malaysia. Whether that was one bad day or a sign of something...

F1 General | Joe Unplugged | 202 | What Does a 13-Year-Old American Need to Know to Become an F1 Driver? episode artwork
Last Tuesday at 7:00 AM

Listener Tyler, a 13-year-old racer from Phoenix, asked Dick, Joe Saward, and Sabrina what it actually takes to reach Formula 1.

He wanted a real answer, not a motivational poster, about what it actually takes to reach Formula 1. Joe Saward and Dick don't sugarcoat the odds. But they don't leave Tyler empty-handed either.

Joe is direct about the numbers: the percentage of competitive 13-year-olds who make it is tiny, and by that age, future F1 drivers are often already living and racing in Europe.

Dick brings his own path as a cautionary tale about s...

George Russell held off Max Verstappen all the way to the flag at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. One mistake took out both Alpines and reigning world champion Lando Norris, and left a question hanging over the driver who made it.

With Dick out for this one, Sabrina and Joe Saward spend this race review on the question underneath it all: in Formula 1, who actually gets to keep their place?

Racing Bulls has three drivers and two seats. Haas is reshaping its lineup. And Christian Horner's name keeps surfacing at Ferrari, at a moment Joe finds...

09/29/2026

For nearly a year, Joe Saward has been the one answering the questions on this show. In this episode, the format flips.

Joe has covered close to seven hundred Formula 1 races over almost four decades, independent of any team or media company. Dick and Sabrina have a fraction of that experience between them. So Joe used this conversation to ask them directly why that gap matters less than people assume.

In this episode, Joe turns his credibility around and spends the whole conversation asking Dick and Sabrina to justify theirs. What he actually wanted to...

This is a rebroadcast from the earliest days of 2 Guys, A Girl, and F1. We've cleaned up the audio as best we could, but as independent creators, we were still learning as we went, and it shows a little. What doesn't show its age: the argument.

Sabrina goes solo for this one, building a genuine legal-style case for why Formula 1 is worth watching, aimed squarely at the skeptics in your life. She works through the sport as chess rather than checkers, its geopolitical weight, the business-school case study hiding inside a hundred-thirty-five-million-dollar cost cap, the American underdog...

We've cleaned up the audio as best we could, but as independent creators, we were still learning as we went, and it shows a little. What doesn't show its age: the fundamentals, even if a few of the driver names have moved on since.

Consider this the syllabus. John and Dick take Sabrina, question by question, through everything a new fan actually needs to know: why it's called a "formula" at all, how a driver climbs from karting to F1, what's actually inside...

09/17/2026

A brand-new Formula One circuit opened in Madrid this year, engineered, by more than one account, to evoke Monaco. Kimi Antonelli won the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix and called the result a little lucky himself. Lando Norris led much of the race before a virtual safety car, thrown four seconds after he had already committed past the pit entry, erased his advantage. The FIA later issued an explanation for the call. Joe Saward has a read on why that explanation existed at all.

Dick, Joe, and Sabrina spend this episode picking apart what a new circuit actually...

Sabrina's best friend Rachel, and John's daughter, hosts this one, asking the questions Sabrina usually asks everyone else. They trace how a decade of friendship slowly turned into genuine obsession: what actually pulled her in (hint: it's not what people assume), why she's fiercely loyal to a driver...

09/13/2026

Kimi Antonelli started nineteenth. He finished first. At Monza, in front of a crowd that has waited sixty years to see an Italian win their home Grand Prix, he did it in Mercedes silver.

Dick, Joe Saward, and Sabrina spend nearly as much time on that moment as they do on the race itself, and on a detail buried underneath it: the person most responsible for developing Kimi into this driver just left Mercedes for Red Bull.

Behind Kimi, Ferrari fell apart. A collision between teammates. A crash that could have been far worse than...

Listener Maria, a parent of a young racer, asked a question that resonates with anyone who's watched a young driver try to navigate this sport: how do you support your child, not just financially, but at every stage as they move up the ladder?

Joe Saward draws on decades of watching young drivers come through the system, from parents who couldn't let go to a driver who quietly walked away from Formula 1 because he never wanted it in the first place.

Dick brings his own experience coaching and racing, including what his own father got r...

08/27/2026

Formula 1 just left Zandvoort for the foreseeable future, and Dick and Joe Saward can't quite agree on how to feel about it.

What starts as a normal breakdown of Lando Norris's tire gamble and Max Verstappen's home-race crash, and how Nico Hulkenberg avoided a spinning Gabriel Bortoleto in a cloud of smoke and dust, turns into something else entirely: a conversation that wanders through Zandvoort's atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the calendar, decades of paddock history, a few stories about past FIA presidents that go somewhere darker than you'd expect from a race review, and exactly why...

07/30/2026

Lando Norris won in Hungary. The tarmac failed again. And Oscar Piastri lost his race, and nearly his cool, in a blue flag battle with Carlos Sainz. Dick also breaks down just how narrow a Formula 1 setup window really is, and why temperature, air density, and even a passing cloud can swing lap time more than most fans realize. But the conversation that mattered most wasn't about any of that. Bahrain can't hold its own Grand Prix this year, so it's paying Malaysia to host it instead. Sabrina and Joe couldn't agree on what that means for what a...

07/24/2026

Dick didn't get everything out during the Belgian Grand Prix Race Review, so he's back with the thoughts he kept turning over afterward. Kimi Antonelli's win, he says plainly, was never really in question. George Russell's race ended in the gravel after an electrical glitch caught out Lewis Hamilton too, and the championship gap is back to where it was weeks ago. Dick also breaks down Isack Hadjar's pit-lane-to-points drive and previews what Aston Martin and Williams's weight problems mean for their upcoming B-spec upgrades.

Kimi Antonelli won at Spa like it was never in doubt. Charles Leclerc briefly led after a caution that made at least one voice in the booth uneasy about how it came about. And by the closing minutes, Dick, Joe, and Sabrina couldn't even agree on whether this was a great race or a manufactured one, or whether that question even makes sense from a TV screen versus trackside. There's also a paddock story making the rounds about a coming change to a rival team's driver program that nobody's confirming yet.

Max Verstappen's rear wing failed again, this time in the race, triggering a late safety car the FIA blamed on a software glitch. Neither Dick nor Joe is convinced by that explanation.

What followed was a chaotic last lap sprint. Charles Leclerc inherited the win. George Russell gambled on worn tires and got lucky into second. Kimi Antonelli, who'd done everything right, got nothing.

Sabrina wasn't able to record this week, so it's Dick's notes and Joe's notes covering Silverstone’s record breaking crowd and a Red Bull problem that isn't going away.

07/02/2026

George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix from a controversial pole position. But the race told a more complicated story than the trophy suggests. Joe Saward says he was fortunate all weekend.

Max Verstappen arrived at the Red Bull Ring with what Dick called a new weapon and by the closing laps both he and Kimi Antonelli were closing on the leader fast.

Then there is the qualifying incident itself. Joe unpacks the controversy in detail. Whether the outcome was technically valid or simply not right is a question Dick, Joe, and Sabrina work through...

06/24/2026

Listener Heath asks: what's the biggest business change in Formula 1 over the last 20 years? There's no shortage of candidates — Liberty Media's acquisition, Drive to Survive, the end of tobacco money, the Concorde Agreement restructure. But Joe Saward lands on one, and makes the case that everything else followed from it.

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina dig into the business transformation of F1 with Joe, who watched the Bernie Ecclestone era up close and has covered every twist since Liberty took over in 2017. Joe's answer is the cost cap — and his argument is that it only became poss...

06/19/2026

Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix. His first win for Ferrari, at the circuit that rewards the car above almost everything else, after a year of being told that whatever he achieved before was the machinery and not the man.

Sabrina saw a driver answering his doubters. Joe kept pulling the conversation back to the things the celebration was skating over: a Mercedes that was quicker in qualifying, the heat, the virtual safety car, and a long history of Barcelona results that flattered to deceive. His read on whether this is the start of a Ferrari...

06/18/2026

For five straight races, the story of the 2026 season was Kimi Antonelli. In Barcelona, the story changed.

Kimi did not finish. Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix in Ferrari red. And a result that had looked settled for weeks finally broke open.

In this Race Notes episode, Sabrina works through a Spanish Grand Prix decided by strategy and nerve as much as speed. Hamilton started on softs, committed early to a three-stop, and was closing on the lead when a late virtual safety car reshaped the race. Whether that safety car handed him the...

06/10/2026

Kimi Antonelli won his fifth consecutive Formula 1 grand prix in Monaco. Behind him, nearly everything fell apart. And the most consequential thing that happened all weekend had nothing to do with the race.

But the conversation was not really about the race. It became about something else. A one-page document that arrived in the paddock motorhomes on Sunday, circulating through teams while the celebration in the harbor was still going. The ADUO verdict named Red Bull's engine the benchmark -- and handed Mercedes the right to keep developing. A system written into the rules specifically to prevent a...

Kimi Antonelli won his fifth consecutive at Monaco -- the youngest winner in the race's history. He led every lap. He set pole and fastest lap. And when the restart came, the moment that had been his one visible vulnerability this season, he was flawless.

Everything behind him was chaos, heartbreak, and questions that don't have clean answers yet.

Pierre Gasly crossed the line third for Alpine. Two pit lane speeding penalties dropped him to seventh.

George Russell had a penalty compounded by a communication breakdown that meant it wasn't served correctly. He...

06/03/2026

Listener Drew asks: would driving Monaco in the opposite direction make the racing better? It's a clever way of asking the real question — is F1's most prestigious race also its worst, and can anything actually fix it?

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina take that question to Joe Saward, who has been going to Monaco since the early 1980s and has a clear-eyed view of exactly what the circuit is and isn't. The short answer on reverse direction: you'd need to demolish several hotels. The longer answer is more interesting.

George Russell took sprint pole, won the sprint, took grand prix pole, and was leading the race when his engine failed on lap 30. Kimi Antonelli, free of pressure, set the two fastest laps of the race on the final two laps. Joe had a pointed read on what George's driving that weekend revealed -- and it wasn't about pace.

Charles Leclerc called Canada his worst weekend in Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton finished on the podium and looked like he hadn't enjoyed himself this much in years. They drive for the same team. Joe had something to say about...

Kimi Antonelli has now won four consecutive Formula 1 grands prix. His streak did not look like it was going to survive Montreal. George Russell took sprint pole, won the sprint, took grand prix pole, and was leading the race when his power unit failed on lap 30.

That is the context. And it matters, because what Canada revealed is bigger than who crossed the line first.

In this Race Notes episode, Sabrina brings a perspective on a weekend that produced some of the most striking intra-team contrasts of the 2026 season. On one side of the Ferrari...

05/20/2026

Listener Heath asks: how do you define different F1 eras, and what are the markers that separate one from another? It's a question that sounds straightforward until you realize there's no official answer — and that the FIA has never even defined what counts as a Formula 1 driver.

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina explore F1 history and how we make sense of it with Joe Saward, a trained historian who has covered the sport since 1988 and has met drivers from nearly every era it has produced. Joe's argument: eras are journalistic constructs, not official designations, and the bl...

Listener Drew asks: if Nico Rosberg hadn't won the 2016 championship, would he still have retired? It's a question about one decision — but it opens up something much bigger about what it costs a driver to compete at the highest level.

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina dig into this with Joe Saward, who was there in 2016 and has watched the psychology of elite competition up close across decades of coverage. Joe's read on Nico is straightforward: he knew he'd likely never beat Lewis Hamilton again, so winning gave him the only exit he could take with his le...

05/07/2026

Kimi Antonelli has now won four consecutive Formula 1 grands prix. Miami was the first one where he had to earn it -- with a world champion behind him, car problems mid-race, and thirty laps of pressure that did not let up.

McLaren arrived with what Andrea Stella called almost an entirely new car. They were fast. They led. Joe Saward laughed.

That laugh is worth understanding. Because the question Dick, Joe, and Sabrina spent most of this episode on is not who won Miami -- it is whether Miami told them anything real about where...

05/06/2026

Kimi Antonelli has now won four consecutive Formula 1 grands prix. Three in a row before Miami. And then Miami -- where for the first time this season, he had to actually earn it.

This was not a clean-air cruise. It was not a safety car gift. Lando Norris had the pace, McLaren had the upgrade, and the reigning world champion spent the final stint close enough to use his boost on every straight. Kimi did not crack. He managed gearbox problems, overheating tires, and thirty laps of sustained pressure -- and still crossed the line first. Dick a...

04/29/2026

Listener Heath asks: with Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas now on the calendar, is Formula 1 growing the sport — or diluting it by over-Americanizing? It's a question Liberty Media has to answer every time a new contract gets signed, and Dick, Sabrina, and Joe Saward don't entirely agree on the answer.

Joe opens by challenging the premise: the United States isn't the world's biggest market by population — China and India both have Formula 1 beat by over a billion people. But Americans spend money on sport in a way no other market currently does, and Liberty, as an American comp...

04/22/2026

Listener Drew asks: if you could put every current Formula 1 driver in the same generation of car for one race, which era would you choose? It sounds like a fun hypothetical — until you try to answer it.

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina bring the question to Joe Saward, who has watched the sport evolve across four decades and has little patience for cross-era comparisons that can't be proven. Dick makes the case for the late 1980s turbo era — 1,500 horsepower from a 1.5-liter engine, terrifying to drive, with safety that would be unacceptable today. Joe pushes back with...

Why have so few Americans made it to the Formula 1 grid in nearly 40 years of racing — and is the system designed to keep them out?

In this episode, Dick and Sabrina sit down with Joe Saward, one of the sport's most independent voices and one of only five journalists who attended every F1 race in 2025 on his own dime. They dig into the infrastructure, economics, and cultural realities that separate American karting talent from the European development pipeline — and why the gap has less to do with speed than most fans assume.

In this conversation, Sabrina sits down with Arisha Shory and Jennifer Cordeiro, third-year Canadian law students who met her at the Lawinsport Motorsport Law Conference in London and have attended COTA, Monza, and Barcelona.
