Three hundred and fifty years ago Campden was horrified when a well-known local man did not come home one evening and his bloodstained neck cloth was found next morning near Ebrington. Tarrare was a French man who lived in the late 18th century and became famous for his seemingly insatiable appetite. Despite being unusually thin, he could reportedly consume enormous amounts of food, swallow live animals and non-food objects, and still remain constantly hungry. During the French Revolutionary Wars, the military even used him as a courier by having him swallow sealed messages, but the mission failed when he was captured. Historical accounts also describe increasingly desperate behaviour driven by hunger, though some of the more sensational stories are debated by historians. Tarrare died...

This week, Sarah takes us deep into one of the most horrifying survival stories ever recorded — the 1972 Andes Plane Crash. What began as a routine flight carrying a Uruguayan rugby team across the snow-covered Andes Mountains quickly turned into an unimaginable nightmare when the plane smashed into the mountains at over 12,000 feet. Stranded in freezing temperatures with almost no food, no rescue coming, and death surrounding them at every turn, the survivors were forced to make decisions so disturbing that the story still shocks the world over 50 years later.

This week on Perplexed, Kate and Sarah dive headfirst into the baffling disappearance of Brian Shaffer — the medical student who walked into a bar in 2006 and seemingly vanished into thin air. But what starts as a deep dive into one of America’s most chilling unsolved mysteries quickly turns into one of the most heated debates the podcast has ever seen. Was Brian the victim of foul play, did he intentionally disappear, or is there something far stranger hiding in the gaps of the CCTV footage? As the theories spiral, so does the argu...

On Halloween night of 1992 something happened that divided the small farming town of Kipling, Saskatchewan. A young single mother accused the town’s well respected doctor of sexual assault while under his care. Wanting to save his reputation, the doctor took a blood test to prove his DNA was not a match for the samples found during the performance of a sexual assault exam. It was not a match.

Israel Keyes was an American serial killer active in the United States between roughly 2001 and 2012. Known for his calculated and methodical approach, Keyes committed multiple murders across different states, often targeting victims at random. He buried “kill kits” (weapons, cash, and tools) in remote locations years in advance, which allowed him to carry out crimes with little immediate trace back to himself.

Keyes avoided patterns that typically help investigators—he chose victims of varying ages and backgrounds, used different methods, and traveled extensively to separate his crimes geographically from his personal life...

Kevin Hines’s story centers on his struggle with bipolar disorder and a life-changing moment in 2000 when, at age 19, he jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge in a suicide attempt. Miraculously, he survived the fall and was rescued.

Afterward, he went through a long recovery process and chose to speak openly about his experience. His story is about moving from deep despair to hope, using his survival as a way to advocate for mental health awareness and encourage others to seek help before it’s too late.

CCTV showed him walking into an area with BIFFA bins in the early hours of 24 September, and his mobile phone signal later tracked near a landfill site — leading investigators to theorize he may have fallen into a bin that was then emptied into a refuse truck. Despite extensive searches and a high-profile investigation, no remains have ever been found. In 2022 an inquest concluded his death was likely caused by being cr...

Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield

Ed Gein was born in 1906 in Plainfield, Wisconsin

After his mother’s death in 1945, Ed completely unraveled. He boarded up her room like a shrine and started dabbling in some light grave robbing — as one does. He’d dig up corpses from the local cemetery, bring them home, and use the body parts to make things like lampshades, bowls, and even a “woman suit” made from human skin. Yeah. That happened
