Star Trek Stories
A podcast where we hang out with friends, watch episodes from across the Star Trek franchise, and chat about them! This is a show for both newcomers and long-time fans alike, as part of we what do here is explore perspectives on Star Trek and storytelling in general. We're currently watching through a curated 100 episode list titled "Venturing Through The Universe." In this list, we're exploring how the Star Trek franchise has grown and changed over the decades, beginning with its origins in 1964 and seeing where it ends up in the modern day. We'll go on adventures with Mister Spock...
"Remembrance"

I feel like the only time I ever hear the word "remembrance" is in the context of "in remembrance." That doesn't bode well for a series that is supposed to be revitalizing a classic character. Is it possible that this show is dead on arrival? We'll just have to do post mortem after we watch this premiere episode of Star Trek: Picard.
Episode discussion starts at 18:21.

"Children of Mars"

Would you believe that there is a cover of a David Bowie song in this... and it ISN'T "Life on Mars?" I mean what else is there to say? I guess we can see if there is anything else to dissect in this tiny little episode of Star Trek: Short Treks.

"Battle at the Binary Stars"

Hmm, I wonder what this episode could be about. Might there be a battle? Some binary stars? It's hard to say. This era of Star Trek is so subversive at times, this might end up being about be a negotiation at a single star. I guess we'll have to check our expectations and watch this prologue concluding episode of Star Trek: Discovery.

"The Vulcan Hello"

I wonder if a Vulcan Hello is anything like an Irish Goodbye. Instead of leaving without telling anyone, would it be arriving? You know, for how many people there are that still have never heard of this series, it seems to fit. However, is having your arrival unknown mean that it is unwelcome? If a Star Trek series falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Regardless if it does or not, let's all still say hello to this new streaming era of the franchise as we watch this premiere...
Star Trek

I know many of you out there have been clamoring for this, but I've been holding out on covering it, since watching Star Trek on a Star Trek podcast is a bit obvious. However, after being worn down by all of you, I have finally decided to give in and watch Star Trek on our show... you bunch of rubes. But will Star Trek live up to its lofty legacy? Will it make for a good episode on our Star Trek podcast? Only time will tell... or, only time travel will tell? Whatever, let's just get this over with...
Modern Trek

Oh boy, we're back everyone. Much like the franchise itself, we went on bit of a hiatus after Star Trek: Enterprise, but fret not! The revival is here... for better or worse. But what does this new era mean for our podcast? Will we continue on, business as usual? Or will we change it up to bring on new audiences? The only way to find out is to tune in for the final episode selection of our 100-episode list, Venturing Through The Universe.

Reflections on The Waning Enterprise

Alas, Golden Age Trek has finally come to an end. We knew it would when we started, but we still had faith... of the heart. But was our faith rewarded? As the sun sets on this era, is there a magical twilight to behold? Let's all hold hands, sing "Kumbaya," and gaze into the twinkling and flickering light of The Waning Enterprise... oh, and also talk about what's coming for Nerd Movies VII.

Star Trek Nemesis

Having a nemesis is bad enough, but having a Star Trek Nemesis? Oof, it doesn't get worse than that, because when Star Trek goes bad, it goes real bad. And sometimes it gets so bad, the franchise full on dies. Sad times. It's been quite the ride, watching this whole era of Star Trek, but as we learned from The Next Generation, all good things must come to an end. So join us for the end of Golden Age Trek as we watch this final TNG movie.

"Terra Nova"

They should have just called this "New Earth." Simple. To the point. I'm always suspicious of the latin titled episodes of Star Trek. There are some good ones to be sure, but sometimes I think they use fancy sounding names to make the stories feel like they're going to be better than they turn out to be. I guess we can determine if this is actually intelligent storytelling, or just another pretentious episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

"Unexpected"

Alright, everyone, you're not gonna believe this. On today's episode of Star Trek Stories we are going to be watching... an episode of Star Trek! Wow. How unexpected. Okay, I know by this point, it's hard to be surprised by anything, unless, of course, they jump the shark and do a "guy gets pregnant" show or something. Oh well, let's see if they can exceed our expectations in this silly episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

"Strange New World"

This is episode 87 of our podcast... so can this really be a strange new world? Might it be possible that this is more of a familiar old world? Well-trodden ground? Home sweet home? Can a prequel truly have any thing new to say? The only way to find out is to explore this uncharted episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

"Fight or Flight"

The Star Trek franchise was in a tricky spot in 2001. Instead of fleeing though, they stood their ground and fought... they had faith of the heart. But was that faith justified? Or should they have cut their loses and flown? All we can do at this point is dig in and watch this life threatening episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

"Broken Bow"

Whelp, folks, here we are... the end of an era. The franchise has had an incredible run up until this point, but if you were here for our Voyager coverage, you know it's started to lose its aim. Does the franchise have any more shots left to shoot? Or is the quiver finally empty? The title of today's episode doesn't inspire me with much confidence, but perhaps our Star Trek arrow will surprise us yet. Hold your breath and watch, as we let fly this premiere episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.
This is the beginning of part...
The Waning Enterprise

It's been a long road... getting from there to here. It's been a long time... but our time is finally near. And we will see our podcast come alive at last... our ratings will touch the sky. And they're not gonna hold our show down no more, no they're not gonna change our minds... because we've got a new chunk of episodes and a new a co-host... oh, and faith of the heart. So polarize the hull plating and buckle down for part seven of our 100-episode list, Venturing Through The Universe.

Next Week - Star Trek Stories Returns!

We are off this week, y'all... but next week, Star Trek Stories returns with another batch of episodes!
Nerd Movies VI - Interstellar

Jaron's Law doesn't mean that every bad movie is going to happen on this podcast. It means that any movie that can happen will happen, and that sounds just fine to me... and to Christopher Nolan, I'd imagine, since that means he gets to be featured on our very prestigious podcast! So buckle up and blast off with us into 2014's Interstellar.

Reflections on Voyager

Well, everyone, we finally made it. After much toil and tribulation, Voyager is now in the rearview mirror for this 100-episode list. But how did it all turn out? Did we learn anything along the way? We're going to sit down, talk through this whole chunk of Star Trek episodes, and come to terms with this silly show. And, we're also going to be teasing what's coming for Nerd Movies VI, so come aboard for our final voyage...r.

"Basics, Part II"

And now we come to it. The basics of Voyager. The basics of Golden Age Trek. The basics of Star Trek as a whole. Will this fulfil the promise of last episode? Of this era? Of this podcast? Are we examining the basics of what makes this franchise great? Or are we lost in the basics of basicness? The answers lie only in this basic episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Basics, Part I"

We have watched a bunch of Voyager on this podcast and we have now finally found the perfect word to describe these episodes: basics. These are all as basic as basic gets for this franchise. And for the culmination of this journey, we get a two-part episode celebrating this show's basic-ness. Yay? Who knows, maybe this first part will set up something special for a change. Let's find out in this season ending episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:00.

"Deadlock"

Have we come to a deadlock with this show? Have we resigned ourselves to the fact that this is more or less what this series is going to be? Or will we finally be making some progress? Will this be the first glimpse of what is to come? Or are we doomed to perpetual mediocrity? The only way to find out is to join us for this high stakes episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Investigations"

We've launched a lot of investigations on this podcast and asked the hard hitting questions: What is the meaning of human existence? What makes life worth living? Is Voyager a good show?--you know, the real big ones that keep you up at night. Today we ask: does Neelix make a good daytime TV talk show host? Heavy stuff. These questions, and more, will be answered on today's softball episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Lifesigns"

If you had scanned us for lifesigns a couple of episodes ago, we would have come up as brain dead. But you know, that last one was actually pretty good. This show might have a pulse after all! But is this next one going to keep our hearts beating? Or it will break them? Have your defibrillators ready as we watch this life-affirming episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Meld"

These episodes really are beginning to meld together. This show has got to shake things up. I'm not saying someone has to die. I'm not saying we have to kill someone. I'm not saying we have to straight up murder a guy, just to boost the ratings and make things interesting. But it wouldn't hurt... but whatever--never mind--let's just watch this deadly episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Alliances"

What an evocative title. So full of nuance. What could it mean? Is it possible that this episodes features... I don't know, an alliance of some kind? Or is it saying something else? Or does it literally just mean alliances? It's hard to know. Let us join forces... build some sort of alliance...and together uncover the true meaning of this perplexing episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Maneuvers"

Have the showrunners finally learned some maneuvers that will help them steer this show to where it needs to go? Or have they simply gotten better at piloting around all those pesky consequences they seem dead set on avoiding? Hell, at this point, I'd take barreling into nonsense over being set adrift like this show so often is. Let's a plot a course and see where we end up in this hopefully not directionless episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 17:12 .

"Cold Fire"

How much you wanna bet they got the name of this episode from Icy Hot? If that's true, does that mean we're about get a pain reliever? Is this going to provide us much needed alleviation from the excruciating mediocrity of this series? Probably not. Knowing this show, cold fire probably just means neutral... how exciting. Who knows, maybe our cold hearts will be thawed by this face melting episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:23.
This is episode 9/17 in our look at Voyager.

"Elogium"

"It appears we have lost our sex appeal, Captain." Do you think the writers realized in that moment that the Trek franchise had lost its own sex appeal? I mean, who decided that naming an episode about space sperm, "Elogium," was sexy? I know this show can feel pretty sterile at times, but this is getting ridiculous. Oh well, if we can't get a rise out of it, maybe we can at least get a laugh from this hopefully titillating episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:38.
This is episode 8/17 in our look...
"Faces"

Star Trek wears lots of different faces over the course of its history: The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, Lower Decks. Some of the faces are stunningly beautiful, while others are not so pretty, but it can be hard to look at both ugliness and beauty. Fortunately for us, we're still staring into the franchise's most average face, so easy viewing ahead... unless, this is one of those times they get fancy (or horrific) with makeup. Shield your eyes and brace yourself for this face-swapping episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:22.

"State of Flux"

It certainly feels like the franchise is in a state of flux at this point in our watch list, at least in terms of overall quality. Sure, we're still in Golden Age Trek, but I can't help but feel we've lost a step since the glory days of TNG. Much like the eponymous starship, is this incarnation of the franchise truly lost? Or will things start turning around soon? Let's find out in this hopefully not backstabbing episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:00.
This is episode 6/17 in our look at Voyager.
<..."Prime Factors"

Oh no, it's a math episode. And not just any kind of math, mind you, but ethical math, the messiest kind. Unfortunately, I was never very good at math--that's why I'm a podcast host instead of a successful human being--so we might be heading into ethically dubious territory with this one. Then again, maybe it's our intrepid crew that'll be the ones wading into murky waters, while we end up with the moral high ground. I guess we'll just have to do the philosophical calculations in this rule breaking episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts...
"The Cloud"

This isn't just any cloud, mind you... this is THE cloud, the definitive article. And that's quite the statement, because as we all know, every other Star Trek story is about a mysterious cloud. So, in a way, this could very well be the ULTIMATE Star Trek. Or maybe not. I guess we'll have to find out by probing the depths of this cloudy episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Phage"

I don't know how to tell you all this, but our podcast has been infected by a virus... a pernicious strain of Star Trek called Voyager. It's potentially treatable, but we may now be prone to bouts of intense boredom and creative frustration. Unfortunately, while it's possible we end up with something more benign and even fulfilling, our odds aren't terribly good. All we can do is wait and see how the virus takes hold of us in this sickening episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
Episode discussion starts at 18:52.
This is episode 3/17 in our look...
"Parallax"

Ah yes, parallels, that classic thematic narrative device in which we... wait, parallax? That's not in the storytelling manual, is it? Let's see... uhm... something about seeing a reflection... okay, I got it. Um, yes, parallax, that classic thematic narrative device in which the character or audience is in a position that sees something that looks different from a different position? Whatever, let's just reflect on this early episode of Star Trek: Voyager.

"Caretaker"

Ah, Voyager... or as we like to call it in the business, the podcast killer. How many Trek-centered shows have thrived covering The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine, only to whither and die when Voyager comes along? But will that happen for our intrepid show? Or will this silly little series be a surprisingly good caretaker for our podcast? The only way to find out is to travel with us 75,000 light years into the Delta Quadrant and watch this premiere episode of Star Trek: Voyager.
This is the beginning of part six of our 100 episode list...
Voyager

While both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine might now be in the rearview mirror, that doesn't mean we're finished with Golden Age Trek!*. But will I be embarking on this journey alone? Or will I find a new companion to join me in this worthy endeavor? Find out as we set the stage for part six of our 100 episode list, Venturing Through The Universe.
