It was the summer of 1979. The last vestiges of the 1970s were set to expire and welcome in the rip and roar era of the 80s.  This chapter takes place in Torrance, California, a coastal town where the air smells faintly of salt and sun-baked asphalt.  The streets glow soft orange beneath the high pressure sodium streetlights.

During a routine maintenance check on a submerged oil pipeline, a team of five experienced divers encountered a catastrophic event. In November of 2023, I put out an open call to interview anyone who had any relation to the Halderson case. At first the lines were quiet. Then I made contact with a man who goes by the name "Wallace."

He claimed to have been bunkmates with Chandler back in county jail. I verified this man's identity and, surely enough, his claim checks out.

Location: The Halderson's basement

Bart and Krista's lifeless bodies are sprawled across the cold cement floor. Various blood soaked tools are strewn about the room. Hedge clippers, scissors, a keyhole saw, a hacksaw, and an axe.

The air is thick with death and desperation.

Chandler is bent over his father's half naked body, hacksaw in hand, as he begins the slow and methodical process of sawing through both of Bart's femurs.

The ridges of the blade begin their incision into the bone, then halt abruptly, leaving a clue. One...

The date was June 29, 2021. An ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

A jailhouse phone call.

An interesting phenomena in its own right. The prison industrial complex in the USA generates an estimated 1.3 billions per year. In March of 2020, when the Dane County Jail stopped all in-person visitations due to the rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus they implemented a policy in which every inmate was allotted two 15-minute phone calls per day.

No matter if it's free or charged, if you happen to be on either end of a jailhouse phone call you should be aware this is not a normal phone call.
