May 7th, 2017 was an ordinary Sunday in the town of Bellaire, Ohio. For the Kinney family, it was a day to run errands. David Kinney, along with his wife Cheri and her 13-year-old daughter, had to make a quick stop at his best friend, Brad McGarry’s house to drop off an electric weed trimmer for him to borrow.

But the ordinary task turned into something far more sinister when they arrived and noticed Brad’s door was suspiciously open. David stuck his head in and yelled out for Brad, but all that greeted him was a haun...

In the early hours of Monday 9 May 2022, in Ballymun, on the northside of Dublin, Ireland, a woman looked out of her window and saw a man in her neighbour's back garden. It was around 2am. She watched him load three bags into the back of a dark jeep, which then drove away.

The house belonged to 52-year-old Lisa Thompson. For the next day and a half, no one heard from her.

On the Tuesday afternoon, a friend went to the house. The back door was unlocked. Inside, Lisa was lying on the living room floor...

On the evening of May 8, 2008, in the northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, 57-year-old Sharon Randolph and her husband, 53-year-old Thomas Randolph, went out together.

It was the Thursday before Mother’s Day. They had dinner at a steakhouse, spent some time in the casino, stopped for fuel, and drove home to their house on Rancho Santa Fe Drive.

Sharon went into the house first.

A short time later, Thomas called 911.

His wife had been shot. And there was a man inside their home, a man Thomas said he had just shot.

On November 11th, 2022, a woman in Salisbury, Massachusetts, called 911 and asked for an ambulance for her boyfriend.

She told the dispatcher he couldn't stand. His nose was bleeding. And, she said, he must have ingested something. It was his 55th birthday.

When emergency crews arrived, they found Leroy Fowler on his bedroom floor. He was in obvious distress, unable to stand, moving constantly, and barely able to speak. He was taken straight to hospital.

Two days later, he was dead, and what doctors had found in his system would turn his death into...

On Sunday the thirty first of May 2009, nineteen year old Noelle Washington walked into a police station in Cincinnati and made a statement against her boyfriend. That afternoon she was examined at hospital.

By the following night, she was dead. So was her nine month old son, Anthony.

So was three year old Sha'railyn Wright, who was only staying over.

All three had been shot in the head.

Why had Mark Pickens killed Noelle Washington so violently?

Was it as simple as keeping her quiet? And if it was...

On the morning of August 20, 2016, a family in a small Minnesota town woke up to find their five-year-old daughter gone.

She had been put to bed a few hours earlier, carried from the couch to her own room, still asleep.

Her blanket was also missing. So was her father’s truck. So was his phone. And so was the man who had spent the night in their house.

By lunchtime, an Amber Alert had gone out across the entire state of Minnesota. By late afternoon, police were eighty miles north of Watkins, standing at...

On March 31, 2020, 64-year-old Barbara Waite sat playing her piano at her home in Squamish, British Columbia. It was an activity that the adoring mother of two loved to do.

But as she played her melodies, Barbara had no idea that this would be her last moment on Earth.

Because quietly standing behind her, her 21-year-old son, former child actor Ryan Grantham, had a rifle pointed right to the back of her head.

Before she could finish the song, a shot rang out, ending her life.

What followed was hours of planning...

On the afternoon of Sunday 12 July 2020, 38-year-old Kerry Woolley was found dead inside her own flat, in the West Midlands of England.

It was her new partner who raised the alarm. A man she had been seeing for a matter of weeks.

He stood outside the building, and he called 999.

And when officers arrived, he was distraught. The grieving partner, who had come to check on her — and walked into something no one should ever have to see.

Word went round that street fast, and the neighbourhood was shocked. This was a...

In December 2022, police arrested a twenty-eight-year-old criminology PhD student for the murders of four University of Idaho students.

On the morning of February 6, 2021, a 999 call came through to police in South Wales.

"I have just killed the wife, police… I have just killed my wife."

The caller was David Maggs, a 71-year-old retired accountant. When the operator asked what had happened, he said that he had just lost it.

Minutes later, officers arrived at the house. On the bottom step of the stairs lay two red kitchen knives. In the living room, they found David sitting in an armchair, subdued, and seemingly defeated.

On the morning of Sunday 24 April 2016, a group of tourists were exploring the rugged coastline of the Munmorah State Conservation Area on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia, when something caught their attention below the lookout at Snapper Point.

As the powerful surf surged through the blowhole, the object repeatedly surfaced before disappearing beneath the white foam. At first, they couldn’t tell what they were looking at. Then it rolled over, and the horrifying truth became unmistakable. It was the naked body of a young woman, floating face down as the waves dragged her vi...

On the morning of October 9th, 2020, a Texas state trooper spotted a woman driving erratically, close to the Texas–Oklahoma border.

When the trooper pulled the vehicle over, the driver was frantic. She was screaming for help, claiming she had just given birth on the side of the road. An ambulance was called immediately, and both the woman an...

In the early hours of March 11th, 2025, residents in a neighbourhood on the eastern edge of Belo Horizonte in Brazil, called the police after witnessing a woman and a young man, dragging what appeared to be a body into a nearby wooded area.

At the door stood forty-two-year-old Erica Pereira...

On the morning of July 31, 2022, at 5:34 a.m., a surveillance camera on Pearl Road in Strongsville, Ohio captured a black Toyota Camry making a slow, controlled turn onto Progress Drive. What happened next, in the space of less than two minutes, would shock a community, and divide a nation.

On the evening of June 8th, 2009, in Lockport, New York, 24-year-old Renee Greco sat at a table playing cards with a group of teenagers she was responsible for caring for.

The judge looked straight back at him and said: "I have very rarely in my life looked into the ey...

On the night of 26 June 1992, in the quiet town of Masterton, New Zealand, a brutal attack unfolded inside a family home.

Inside were children, a teenager, a young couple, and a woman just weeks away from giving birth.

By the time the night was over, all of them were gone.

The man responsible was not a stranger. He was someone they knew. Someone who had lived in that house, who had been part of that family, and who, just days earlier, had been asked to leave.

When a 911 call came in at 12:34 a.m. on October 4th, 2012, from seventeen-year-old Jake Evans in Aledo, the dispatcher wasn’t met with panic. She was met with calm.

On the other end of the line, Jake, speaking clearly, admitted to the unthinkable. He told her he had just shot his mother. And his sister.

How could someone so young sound so composed after committing such violence? What could possibly lead a seventeen-year-old to turn a gun on his own family?

This is a difficult case to tell. To protect the victims, no names are used, and some identifying details are withheld. Even so, it is important to tell this story carefully and truthfully, because what happened did not occur in isolation. This case exposed profound failures across child protection, healthcare, and safeguarding systems—and led to significant changes in how such cases are now handled. In its aftermath, multiple independent inquiries were launched to examine how authorities missed years of warning signs.

The case became known as the Sheffield case, and was widely labelled by the media as the...
