Musings of a Third Culture Polyglot - Learn English through the medium of... well, English, taught by someone who learned it from scratch and now teaches (ironically!) American native speakers how to use their own language. This podcast will mix Japanese, Korean, and English to bring you a unique look at the phenomenon that is language and communication. In the process, I will invite you to step out into new horizons and not just grow in your English abilities, but also towards making your life goals a reality. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-UayEfyI_KzmvWTy_aroIA

On Condolences
#11
11/23/2022

What do you say when someone passes away? This is an inevitable situation in life—both for ourselves and those around us. Each culture has its own way to express condolences. In today’s episode, we’ll explore what to say—and not to say—in English when someone passes. The expression is easy enough, but mind the tone and approach.

American Bully
#10
10/26/2022

Let’s admit it: we fear a lot when it comes to learning English. One fear is how others will view us. Well, in this episode, I share a story of encountering an American bully (but maybe not that serious in reality). I'm glad to report that I survived and came out on top! You can too.

On Motivation
#9
10/22/2022

We all have times when we struggle with motivation. Motivation “experts” are everywhere—at least here in the US—and so are motivation hacks, whether it be music to get us amped up or movies to inspire us. But at the end of the day, all of these things will fail us. We can’t rely on these temporary tactics or feelings to carry us through to our goals. No matter how you slice it, you have to just find a way to get there. This isn’t necessarily an encouraging word, but it’s the truth. Motivation is overrated, exe...

The Most Underrated & Overlooked Aspect of Learning English
#8
10/16/2022

Everyone focuses on speaking English and how to get expressions right. This leads to frequently asking natives if a particular expression is correct. But learning expression by expression in an isolated way wastes a ton of time. Good news! There is an aspect of English learning that, if you learn well, can help you form solid foundation to be able to answer those questions yourself. You can then have your own accurate gauge as to what is “right” and wrong. In fact, I would attribute a lot of my leveling up in English to working hard at this one craf...

English Pronunciation for Beginners
#3
09/26/2022

Some sounds in English are notoriously difficult to pronounce. But be assured—English speakers struggle just as much, if not more, trying to sound out words in your language! Knowing this, be encouraged, and don’t worry too much about how you sound. Instead, feel free to make a ton of mistakes and enjoy the learning process. Whether you’re learning English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or any other language for that matter, we’re all in the same boat.
