September 11, 2001 was 25 years ago. But if you lived through that day, it doesn’t feel like it. StoryCorps started recording survivors and the families of victims just a few years after, with the goal of archiving one interview for each person lost. We dug through more than two decades of those recordings to create a portrait of living through 9/11 — and afterwards.

On August 27, 2025, a mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis injured dozens and killed two children. In the weeks and months after, survivors and their loved ones needed to talk about what had happened. In this episode from our friends at Sidedoor, a podcast from the Smithsonian: Clifton Chenier grew up in rural Louisiana watching how his father’s accordion could magically turn front porches into dance parties. When he was old enough to play himself, Chenier began blending the Black Creole music of his childhood with R&B and blues sounds of the 1940s and ’50s. Through rare archival recordings and firsthand stories, Sidedoor traces Chenier’s journey from a sharecropper’s son to the undisputed King of Zydeco.
