49. So we got our diagnoses…
#49
12/19/2021

We all know the situation: we feel that something is off. We havenā€˜t been feeling our best and want to know what’s wrong with us. Or maybe weā€˜re just sitting at the dentist and thereā€˜s a magazine in front of us, practically inviting us to take a test about our mental health. Either way: we take the test. We get our ā€ždiagnosisā€œ - now what? In this weekā€˜s episode we did just that. We took some mentalh health self- tests and share the results with you. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty hilarious. More importantly though, we talk about th...

48. Are we too emotionally dependent?
#48
12/05/2021

This weekā€˜s episode is all about answering your questions! Starting with the topic of emotional dependence and asking ourselves if we can and should actually be emotionally independent from other people? Why is independence in that sense something we are pressured to strive for when, in fact, humans simply need other humans?! Also we talk about how to deal with constant changes in our lives and how you can (and should!) question your family and the roles everyone has within this construct. Hope you enjoy the episode and, as always, let us know if you agree with our points of...

47. ā€˜Tis the season; for seasonal depression.
#47
11/23/2021

Hi everyone! This gloomy week we are coming to you completely unaware of the upcoming lockdown but almost having a psychic feeling that impending doom is on its way! (Trust your gut folks) šŸ˜‚ You know what? Sometimes there are days or weeks where you just feel like shit, and that is how we are feeling right now. We don’t need a reason, we don’t need an explanation, it just is what it is, and it actually takes a lot to just accept that. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·šŸ¾ We are such big advocates of therapy and psychoanalysis, but it’s so important to use your own judgement and...

46. Halloween - sharing our deepest fears!
#46
10/31/2021

Itā€˜s Halloween and therefore time to share some truly spooky shit. What are the things you’re really scared of? And what were you scared of as a child? There might be a link between now and then as fears are often something we carry with us throughout our lives, even though they may manifest differently at various stages. In this weekā€˜s episode we dive into some deep dark fears of ours and realize once again: weā€˜re not alone with it.

44. Catch up - more dating and therapy!
#44
06/20/2021

Hey hey hey! Another episode has come around and we are just doing a good old catch up! We barely get to just update each other on what’s going on anymore because life got so crazy in the last couple months. It really went from zero to one hundred with no warning. 🚨🤭Join us for the usual chit chat: dating, more dating, therapy, and some other random bits and bobs. šŸ˜‚šŸ™‚ We went from telling funny stories to actually getting into a really serious topic that has been weighing on us lately. Tune in to find out what it was!!

43. Intimacy vs. Isolation - Development beyond Freud pt.2
#43
06/13/2021

Intimacy vs. Isolation aka the young adulthood stage defined by Erikson. What does intimacy actually mean? Our first association often immediately goes to a strong and close physical relationship, to sex but isn’t intimacy so much more? What about intimacy with friends forexample, where it’s more about learning to have genuine, authentic relationships? As we dove into this week’s topic of the podcast, continuing with Erik Erikson’s developmental phases,we started to get a bit confused and skeptical of the theory on this stage particularly. Maybe it’s also a resistance as we are currently in it lol. As...

42. Erik Erikson - Development beyond Freud pt. 1
#42
06/06/2021

When we think psychoanalysis one of the first things that comes to mind is early development and the insane impact it has on our adult lives. Many critics have said that there is too much of a focus on the infant life, and that psychoanalytic psychotherapy is hugely lacking in the here and now, as well as later development (beyond the age of five or six). Boy do we have great news for you! šŸ¤“šŸ˜ŒErik Erikson, a German/ American psychologist, came up with his own stages of development, covering one’s whole life span! This week we thought we’d focus on s...

41. Boundaries - the ultimate form of self care
#41
05/30/2021

ā—ļø NO is a complete sentence ā—ļøSaying ā€œnoā€ is one of many expressions of creating personal boundaries that allow you to focus your time doing the things that you want to do, things that make you feel good. We all kinda know that, yet many of us struggle with not only saying no, but setting boundaries in general. Whyā€˜s that?In this weekā€˜s episode we discuss boundaries and everything surrounding them: reflecting on the boundaries we had growing up (or lack thereof), the way we learned to communicate boundaries, our struggles with it and - very important - the topic of boundar...

40. Triggers - where did that come from?!
#40
05/16/2021

Have you ever gone about your day and suddenly had a response to something that was completely out of proportion? Welcome to the club! šŸ˜šŸ˜‘Triggers are something that not only effect people who have had severe trauma, but are a a part of any healthy person’s life as well. They sneak up on you and get you when you least expect it, and then leave you thinking ā€œwhat the hell was that about?!ā€ šŸ§šŸ¤”When unconscious material or even thoughts or feelings that you simply don’t feel comfortable expressing are triggered, it can feel like your world is falling apart. Don’t feel al...

39. Mourning & Melancholia - sadness vs. depression
#39
05/02/2021

So we all know that state of feeling down, sad, empty and what we often call ā€ždepressedā€œ. But what is the difference between sadness and depression? Is there one? Quick answer: YES! šŸ’„In this weekā€˜s episode we discuss the difference between these two states in psychodynamic terms using the essay ā€žMourning & Melancholiaā€œ by Freud (1918), in which he described exactly that. Even though we struggled a bit putting it into understandable and not too-technical words, we hope it can clarify some things for you guys and you get a better understanding of what sadness is and when it occurs vs. actual, patho...

38. Hypochondria - illness anxiety and fake pills
#38
04/29/2021

Hypochondriac is one of those words that’s so widely used to describe a certain personality or character but how often is it really diagnosed? After our discussions we concluded that the answer is rarely, VERY rarely. Is it going out of trend like hysteria did? šŸ‘  šŸ’„ This episode also contains a serious ā€œahaā€ moment, which we are not giving away!!! Okay fine here’s a clue: maybe there aren’t many hypochondria patients in treatment because that’s exactly what we want to avoid! šŸ¤šŸ¤”šŸ˜®Do you know anyone who suffers from hypochondria or are we all just more paranoid about our health than we used to...

37. Sex(uality) - the things that no one tells you
#37
04/18/2021

I vividly remember learning about the platypus for at least a week in biology class in High School, yet I have no memory of learning anything about the female orgasm, masturbation or sexual identities. The question is: why? How do we expect young women and men to grow up knowledgable, sexually safe and healthy, if we still donā€˜t talk openly about these topics and make sex education a priority? Sex and Sexuality are a huge part of our lives and identities, yet often remain a taboo topic, even today. Also, they are enormously important topics in therapy. For some of...

36. Therapy Update - the long and winding road to (no idea)
#36
04/05/2021

This week we are doing a little check in on our progress and regressions in our own psychoanalytic psychotherapies. Not only are we training to be therapists, but at the same time we’re both patients as well! 😳😯Being in a psychoanalytic therapy seriously feels like being in an escape room - solving some clues and getting closer to completing the mission but also stumbling on some that you can’t get passed to save your life! šŸ”Ž šŸ•µšŸ»ā€ā™€ļø It’s so important to be aware of these ups and downs and to know that they are NORMAL and also GOOD!!! šŸ‘šŸ¼šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ™‚We also wanted to show you that it’s not magi...

35. Group Dynamics - why we all behave differently when weā€˜re around people
#35
03/21/2021

Groups! We are always part of them, whether we are aware of it or not. When we are with friends, family, at work, but even when we go out on the streets or to do our grocery shopping - groups & crowds are everywhere and they influence our behavior massively šŸ‘„šŸ‘„ In this weekā€˜s episode we discuss one psychoanalytic view on group dynamics and try to elaborate on the question why we behave differently in a group vs. when we are alone! For example, did you know that there are actually a lot of similarities between being part of a group and bein...

34. Modified bodies - tatted
#34
03/14/2021

This week we questioned why people modify their bodies today (specifically with tattoos). The trend of getting tattooed has become so widespread, but has the meaning behind it changed? šŸ¤”šŸ‘€The way we look in our current society is of so much importance, but we lack the purpose and mindfulness that came along with these ancient traditions. What is making us carry them on into our modern world?Check it out and tell us what you think! 😁🤩

33. Hysteria - how ā€žfemale issuesā€œ started it all!
#33
03/07/2021

The term Hysteria comes from the Greek word ā€žHysteraā€œ which is translated to uterus. This already gives us a literal explanation of how the illness, of which the first records of patients date back to Ancient Egypt in 1900 BC, was understood - namely as abnormalities in the uterus and reproductive organs aka female issues🚺Many many years later, Freud, who became interested in Hysteria after studying under French neurologist Jean Martin Charcot in Paris in 1885, conceptualized his own theories on the illness with his colleague Josef Breuer. Breuer’s patients basically showed the craziest and widest variety of symptoms, all considere...

32. Apollo & Dionysus - when two worlds collide
#32
02/28/2021

This week we went all philosophical on you, and discussed two Greek gods: Apollo and Dionysus šŸ‘¼šŸ». How is that relevant to psychotherapy and mental health? Our old friend and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche made Apollo and Dionysus symbols for the Apollonian and the Dionysian; one representing things like order and rationality, and the other representing things like chaos and intuition. šŸ”„ šŸ“š These two characters are living within us all (creepy right?!) and go right along with the theories of major psychoanalytic thinkers such as Freud and Lacan 😮🤯 Are you an Apollonian or Dionysian?! Or are you just balanced AF and are both equally? 😁

31. OCD - obsessions, compulsions & the importance of potty training
#31
02/21/2021

You are leaving your house. You close the door behind you. You take two steps. ā€žWait, did I lock the door?ā€œ . You go back just to check. Again. And again. And one last time just to make sure! -ok seriously, who has not done this at some point in their life?! šŸ¤” So what makes someone truly ā€žOCDā€œ and why do we use that word to label people anyway? Where does something stop being a quirky mannerism (we all have ours!) and where does actual compulsive behavior begin? In this weekā€˜s episode we discuss everything arround the topic of OCD - obsessive c...

30. Valentine’s Day - chocolate for one
#30
02/14/2021

Valentine’s Day - the most romantic day of the year has finally arrived and boy are we not ready for it. We go through our dating history and reminisce past years with exes, dating in the cities we live in, and what this day even is to us! šŸ¤” This episode is a bit of a pessimistic rant, but at the end of the day the take away is really that we are all putting way more meaning into this basically meaningless holiday than we should be. 🤠It’s not a time to feel bad about being alone, and even more than...

29. Freudā€˜s Legacy - still relevant or outdated?
#29
01/31/2021

ā€ž... ok, but isnā€˜t Freud like suuuuper outdated?ā€œ - if we got a nickle for every time someone asked us that... weā€˜ll still not be rich but you get the point šŸ˜‰ so is he? Are Sigmund Freud and his theories outdated and just not relevant anymore? While this is a very debatable topic and while there definitely are some theories by him that could use a little update, we believe that there are certain things about Freudā€˜s work that will never be outdated and are still very applicable today. You can hear what they are and why we think so in t...

28. Psychedelic Psychotherapy - are we trippin’ or are we on to something?
#28
01/24/2021

We all associate crazy hippies and Rock’n’Roll with LSD and psychedelics in general, but what if we were to tell you that there’s WAY more to them than free love? This week we are here to convince you that psychedelic psychotherapy is a scientifically proven EFFECTIVE treatment for mental illness! 😮🤭 a lot of old school psychopharmacology is outdated and some of it has honestly got to go! With more research, substances like LSD might be on your prescription list in the future šŸ¤”šŸ¤©

27. Intuition - is our gut really always right?
#27
01/17/2021

What exactly is intuition? We all know that gut feeling, that strong sense of simply knowing something without knowing why or how. While in today’s society, we are conditioned to have certain thought patterns, are taught to think logically and rationally and to basically go against our gut feeling, at the end of the day, our intuition is very often right. So is intuition your free will? Or is it also just highly conditioned and learned? And how does it connect to your Id, the unconscious, powerful source guiding our lives? In this weeks episode we discuss all these an...

26. Gaslighting - they really are driving you crazy
#26
01/10/2021

šŸ’” šŸ’” šŸ’” It all began in 1944 when a seemingly simple film called ā€œGaslightā€ about a manipulative husband convincing his wife she lost her mind, showed a very real phenomenon to the world. Have you ever thought to yourself ā€œam I crazy?ā€ in relation to an issue with someone close to you? You may be tied up with someone who gaslights 🤭😠 Check out this episode to see if you can pinpoint some of our warning signs and methods of gaslighting!

25. The Year 2020 - reflecting on the year of rejection
#25
12/28/2020

As we are coming to the end of 2020 itā€˜s time to look back and discuss the challenges, the teachings, the good, bad and ugly of this crazy past year. We are optimistic for 2021 and are ready to leave the year of rejection (yes, thatā€˜s what we called it!) behind us. Are you guys with us?

24. Imposter Syndrome - involuntary swindlers
#24
12/13/2020

Have you ever achieved something and had this strange feeling that you didn’t deserve it or that you got there by chance or luck? You certainly are not alone, and this crazy phenomenon actually has a name 😮 IMPOSTER SYNDROME! This week we tried to think about imposter syndrome outside the box, and realized that it underlined so many experiences we’ve had in our lives, all the way from exposing our bodies and not wanting people to realize that we ain’t that hot to something as simple as sending an email!! 🤭😐😱 Imposter syndrome is so much more common than we think - ev...

23. Dating Advice - donā€˜t worry, not from us!
#23
12/06/2020

ā€žShould we... share the potatoes?ā€œ šŸ˜In case you didnā€˜t know, this is how we flirt. For obvious reasons we need help in that area, which is exactly why this week we have a super fun episode for you! We reacted to some of the most popular dating tips and tricks by best selling author and international dating GURU Matthew Hussey. It would be an understatement to say we had fun recording this - hence our hysterical laughter all throughout the episode! We hope you enjoy this topic and can laugh at or with us šŸ˜‰ So far we have in mind to hang...

22. Disconnected - PLEASE REBOOT SOFTWARE aka our brains!
#22
11/30/2020

EARTH TO CARLA AND LOLA. Man were we out of it this week! It’s crazy how we matched the topic of the day by being completely disconnected and NOT present while we recorded. This week’s episode is something a lot of us have been struggling with during the pandemic: disconnection and dissociation! What can we do to fix this?!? We always have to separate the pathological examples of things like dissociation, but on a smaller scale the amount of zoning out and confusion we’ve been experiencing has been off the charts!!!

21. Ghosting - from part- time to pathological ghosts.
#21
11/22/2020

ā€žOkay so I havenā€˜t heard from them in like 18 days but I am sure theyā€˜re just suuuper busy. Right???ā€œ - WRONG. Sorry to break it to you, but you’ve been ghosted šŸ‘» But at this time, who hasnā€˜t had that experience? Whether it was a part-time ghoster or a pathological ghost (Ā© mytherapistsaid), ghosting is not a new phenomenon. However, it’s definitely more noticebale nowadays than pre-social media, dating apps, phones etc. This week we chat about our experiences as both ghosts and ghostees (YES THATā€˜S A WORD!) and try to figure out what makes people behave that way beca...

20. Coronavirus - it’s been quite a year.
#19
11/15/2020

The elephant in the room had to be addressed: Coronavirus AKA Covid19. This week we explored all of our associations and feelings around the pandemic and both admitted our struggles during this global crisis, as well as our own flaws in the way we handle and talk about the current situation. On one hand these times bind us all together and make our experiences much more collective than they used to be, considering things like nationwide lockdowns, but on the other hand we also feel like we have never been more different than our peers and the people around us...

19. Anxiety - the underlying source of all our issues.
#9
11/01/2020

ANXIETY. Something we all know and we all struggle with (some more, some less). According to psychoanalysis, anxiety is the emotion that is the core of all (!) our mental issues! But why? What exactly is anxiety? And what is its purpose? In this weekā€˜s episode we dive into this big topic, discussing facts, own experiences and differentiations, ranging from social anxiety to phobias, panic attacks and general anxiety. Anxiety is such an uncomfortable feeling that can make us feel isolated and alone with our problems but in reality, it connects us all. So let’s talk about it šŸ˜€ Click the lin...

18. The Oedipus complex - the ultimate challenge in our early development.
#8
10/25/2020

In the words of our therapist:ā€œANDDDD OEDIPUS HAS ENTERED THE STAGEā€ šŸŽ¬ this statement is so accurate considering the amount of times we have reflected on a strange situation or behavior in our lives and then came to the realization that it is connected to the Oedipus complex! A theory that has been rejected and discredited by MANY, the Oedipal conflict is something we work with and use a lot in our psychoanalytic therapies and education, so we wanted to make an episode about it in hopes of you all giving it a fair chance if you think it’s gross or...

17. Defense Mechanisms - how our mind protects itself!
#7
10/18/2020

This week we’re telling you that there is a constant battle going on in your mind between stuff that wants to come out and other forces that do their best in keeping that stuff in the dark. Those essential forces are the so called DEFENSE MECHANISMS. The lady who randomly attacks you in the supermarket. That one cousin who you cannot help but despise and don’t know why. The need to kick something or someone when you are upset. ALL DEFENSE MECHANISMS. Still not sure what we’re talking about? Fair enough. Listen to the episode and find out wh...

16. Attachment - secure attachments (hit us up) and not so secure attachments
#6
10/04/2020

What if we told you that there is basically a guide to what kind of people you find yourself in romantic relationships with and why? THERE KIND OF IS! Welcome to attachment styles ladies and gentlemen, one of our favorite subjects to chat about. It’s so crazy to think about the dynamics we had with caregivers during infancy being our references of how to pick up an eligible bachelor šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

15. A male perspective on things - feat. Martin Jurkas
#5
09/27/2020

WE DID It! We managed to get our very first guest on the podcast! Meet Martin, an amazing hairdresser and techno DJ in Vienna, who openly shares his experiences from his own therapy with us, as well as gives us a male perspective on body image, social media and emotional vulnerability among men. Also, we talk about the many parallels of hairdressers and therapists, which are numerous and were so interesting for us to hear! We really hope you guys enjoy this episode as much as we did talking to Martin, heā€˜s a blast!

14. Addiction - its harder to empathize than we thought.
#4
09/20/2020

We struggled to talk about addiction this week and got frustrated as we were reminded of what a toll it’s taken on our own families. When reflecting on our compulsive behaviors our narcissism was once again revealed and guys, it is striving! Last but not least - was Sigmund Freud a cocaine addict?!

13. Body Image & Eating Disorders - it’s okay to not be body positive
#3
09/13/2020

This weekā€˜s topic was an intense one for us since we share some of our very personal experiences with body image issues and disturbed eating behavior/eating disorders. Itā€˜s important to us to share these experiences, since we know we are not alone in this! So tune in if you want to hear some insight on where body and eating issues actually stem from, why we are critical of the term ā€žbody positivityā€œ and what helped us on our personal journeys of recovery.

12. Narcissism- From Narcissus to Lola’s ex.
#2
09/06/2020

This week we’re taking you on a journey through time starting with Carla’s amazing story telling skills as she sets the scene in Ancient Greece and tells us the story of where the word narcissist comes from, ALL the way to Lola’s ex (the narcissist) because it’s pretty hard to have an episode without mentioning an ex. Thanks for listening and take note of how to spot those darn narcissists - including the narcissists in ourselves!

11. Aggression - why weā€˜re all obsessed with true crime.
#1
08/30/2020

Kicking off season 2 with a topic that weā€˜re all familiar with 🤬 Yes yes, you know what aggression is, but there is wayyyy more to it than simply being angry! Aggression is sneakily disguised in our daily life ā€žhabitsā€œ, some you might not even think of. It’s also closely linked to sexuality and repressed in such a strong way that we canā€˜t help but be obsessed with everything related true crime! Listen to the full episode on spotify, apple podcast or anchor to find out more and let us know what you think of this new, more structured and theme-rel...
