Wildcatdojo Conversations
Karate is for everyone. So, join us each week for a 20 to 25 minute conversation on all types of subjects. We go from managing the distractions of daily life, through martial arts history and people, and common sense concepts to add to your self defense armor. Plus we have interviews and so much more. After spending over 40 years discussing life's challenges in a dojo, (both as a student and as a teacher) I decided it would be fun to share the conversations with everyone. And it is! We're having a great time with our guests each week thinking, talking and very...
We Talk Contempt
It's true, somehow Sensei Jackie, Sensei Landyn and I got to the word contempt. But also, we celebrate surpassing 7 years of podcasting. But back to contempt....
The impetus to this was a simple pop up screen one day and I'm surprised to say we had so much more fun that I expected.
Early in the episode Sensei Landyn mentions Brene Brown. I mention the spelling here in case you want to look her up. I did - very interesting.
This episode brought up an old interview with our friend, Sensei Rebekah. She is a p...
Teaching Kids Karate - We have Stories
A special thanks to Sensei Landyn for opening the show. Sensei Jay threw out the idea of us spending an episode talking about the adventures of teaching small children. I immediately said "absolutely". And we did.
Hey, if you have a great story, get in touch and share it so we can build another episode.
Master Kelljchian used to say that the children taught him more than he taught them. We did an entire episode on that. Here it is:

We also did an episode asking k...
Zurriane Bennett Interview Part 2 - Life As a Marine
We had so much fun talking with Sensei Bennett that we kept the conversation going through his life as a marine and leading to his current role of helping others. I loved his quote "That consistency of inconsistency is too consistent." Thanks Sensei.
I'm attaching his first interview, even though it was just last week - in case you missed it.

<...Interview with Zurriane A. Bennett - Part 1
Do I need to say that Sensei Jackie and I had so much fun meeting a new friend.
A big shout out to Sensei Bennett for his time and a number of great stories of his decades in karate.
At one point he mentions that he and Sensei Tracy were kids together. It is a wonderful coincidence that we interviewed her. (Thanks Shihan Tracy - I hope you're doing well!) Here's that episode:

Two "F" Words: Flight and Fujoshi yo Goshin no Kata
Welcome to a busy episode. Sensei Jay joins us as we tackle a common term in karate and one that isn't common but is a little controversial....you'll see.
Sensei Jay was a guest on an episode called "A Real Fight, A Real Mess" - He re's that link:

With the word flight we opened the conversation to a lot of ideas. One of those things was back in 2022 when we did a few episodes on aging:

Pearl Hart - Lady Bandit of the Wild West
I'm not 100% sure how we ended up discussing a lady bandit from 1800s Arizona, but I'm glad we did. What an interesting piece of history.
We're joined by Sensei Jay - the voice at the beginning and end of our show! Not that familiar with him? Here's one of his first appearances. We talk Archery:

Time - We Take Another Look
That's right. The first time we talked about time was in January of 2020. Here's that episode if you want a refresher:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/2351981
We also try to catch up on some listener mail. In case the mention of it makes you want to listen, here are episodes mentioned in our listener mail.
Back in April, we did an episode on the power of laughter. Here'a a link:

Movie Review - Mortal Kombat 1995
Sensei Randy joins us for a look back 30 years to the original Mortal Kombat. Feeling blue and need a laugh? This is the episode for you.
If you want to see the movie, it streams on Prime and HBO Max. Or, find a DVD for sale cheap.
There isn't a lot of need for me to connect other episodes, so I think I'll tag our first movie review ever. Sensei Jackie and I watched it in 2021 - the Karate film Budo:

Another Look at the Code of the Warrior - Comparing Different Cultures
You cannot have too many episodes on character development. Today we're lucky enough to have a new guest, Sensei Chrissy, for a comparison of Native American culture and Goju teachings as they were taught to us by Master Kelljchian.
We had so much fun and information overflowed the time we had. Of course, we have tackled the code as taught by Master Kelljchian before. I'm going to tag an episode below. However, I'm tagging the one I put on YouTube. (Maybe you don't know I've been uploading old episodes to YouTube - so here's a way to c...
What You Do Alot of... An Archived Episode (originally aired in 2019)
So much to add to this classic episode. We were in our first few months of recording and you can hear that. Still, the content is worth hearing.
Our guest was our friend and fellow Black Belt Sensei Greg Ebenfeld. I mention that he is a Trust and Will Attorney in Broward County Florida. Since, this episode back in 2019, Sensei Jay and I used his services and I 100% recommend him. You can call his office at: 954-430-5644. What he did in his profession, that I didn't expect, was make the event comfortable, and even a little...
Hanshi Malanoski Shares Some Goju History
Thanks Hanshi, for being so generous to return with answers to questions I amass. Even if you don't train in Goju karate, you'll love these stories.
First, Hanshi talks about the Urban Legacy Foundation - a scholarship foundation going strong today. We encourage you to support it. Here's an email address to get you started:

Book Episode - Three Books on Taoism
Thanks Sensei Tracey, for hanging out and talking Taoism books with us today. As always, it was a fun.
During the episode I mention that, as you can see, the word is spelled with a "T" but is said with a "D" - Daoism (as it were). I googled why? It is a simple 1/2 hour search if you're interested. But here are the highlights: a) it was an interpretation of it's time, b) the sound is breathy and lives between our 2 letters - T & D, and finally c) some recent prints have changed the "T" to a "D...
Landyn Leaves us with a lot of Knowledge....
Today's show is probably not as closely focused on karate as usual. During the conversation with Sensei Landyn we got so interested in what he was saying that we lost ourselves in the conversation.
I hope you do the same. If you followed the show from the beginning, you know that (now Sensei) Landyn has been an integral part of the show since age 11. It is nice to take a minute to share in his upcoming trip to his University years.
In a moment of nostalgia, I'll tag our first episode here. You can hear Sen...
Critical Thinking - That's Right Folks - We're Using Big Words!
Frankly, I'm surprised that we got here too. But here we are. No need to look up critical thinking before you listen- we cover it - in our own way!

Pushing On - OTJ Training Vs Formal Education
Sensei Derek, Sensei Jackie and I share all kinds of stories about our experiences in On The Job Training and Education. And we want to hear your experiences. We also add a thing or 2 we found in our reading and we bring it back to karate training.
I bet you're wondering how I'm going to connect this back to Karate? Listen to the end and see.
I'm going to attach a link to an episode we did where, at least for part of the time, we talk about the power of adaptation; an important part of...
Britain's role in WW2 - A Conversation with Hanshi McKinnon
It's always a pleasure to talk with Hanshi McKinnon. He brought it to my attention that Britain fought WW2 for 2 years before the USA got involved. That is the theme of todays show.
Before you get mad at us for featuring Britain. We've done many shows on USA Warriors involved in WW2. The first one we did was with Sensei Jay about his dad. Here's the episode:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8329162
Want to learn more about Hanchi McKinnon? We met him back in 2021. Here's the first interview we did with him:
Interview with Sensei Carrera - Suikendo Karate and More
A friend, Sifu Mike Allen, introduced us to Sensei Victor. What a pleasure to interview him and learn about his background, history and style. Btw - Some great stories are enclosed. One of them includes hitting the makiwara. We did an episode on that. Listen to it here:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8708384
When we began talking about weapons, we touched on an ancient weapon - the Tinbe-Rochin (Small sword (rochin) and shield (tinbe)). Of course we did an episode that included it. Here is that link:

Talking Adamant, Ai and Actionless Action - Letter A Abounds
The first thing we say as the episode opens is that we love Letter Episodes; exploring ideas and not really sure where the conversation is going to go. The 3 of us talk, laugh and learn.
The conversation travels all over the place. Let's start with a term used often in America in the dojo - oos (This spelling is a nod to Master Kelljchian. It's commonly spelled osu). Back in 2019, we did a 5 minute short on the word osu and you can listen to it here:

Interview with Sensei Robert Lasorsa about his Dad - a WW2 Vet
For the past year or so, we've been trying to create this opportunity to interview Sensei Lasorsa about his father, Frank. There is so much love, laughter and history in this episode. Two of the long stories Sensei told us had to be cut for time. We'll share those in December in our next episode of outtakes. Definitely check out our Insta to see the pic of Frank in WW2. Thanks Sensei, for sharing your dad's story.

Fathers as Warriors
In the 7 years of doing this podcast, I've never been "on time" to connect our episode to the holiday that is happening. (For those of you who might be interested - I'd need a bigger staff to pull that off.)
However, this year, this episode is about Fathers and is airing the Monday before Father's Day! Congratulations to all - us and all dad's who go the distance.
I need to mention that Sensei Jay, who has a story here, has 3 sons. All of them know their dad to be amazing. But time only allowed f...
Stories, Laughter and Mistakes from the Past Six Months
I love that I don't discard our mistakes. I love sharing them and I especially love the chance to bring back guest stories. We have plenty and here are some of the episodes we're referencing. In the first few minutes we mention the term wabi sabi. Here's one of our episodes on that:

Opinions Abound on this Letter O Episode
Welcome to another Letter episode. Today we're with Sensei Derek discussing over-extension, outside blocks and more. During today's discussion we mention that it might be fun to tag an old letter episode into the notes. I decided to tag our first letter episode, which is from 2021:

Also, along the way Sensei Derek brings up a great old saying: What we do alot of we become very good at. We did an episode on that. Here it is:

Dexterity: Another Page From 365 Days of the Warrior
We love doing these homages to Master Kelljchian's thoughts and wisdom. This quote is directly related to weapon's dexterity. But, with Sensei Derek's help, we travel all over the place with it. (What else is new!).
I'll tag 3 episodes here. First off we reviewed Master Kelljchian's book 365 Days of the Warrior in 2021. Here's a link:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/7049776
Much of what we discuss relates back to self-defense. We've done a number of episodes about this subject. This one is from 2020, with Sensei Jay:

Today we talk with Sensei Jay about the great baseball player, Yogi Berra.

The Power of Laughter
Mark Twain said "The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter."
Sensei Landyn, Sensei Jackie and I laugh our way through this serious subject (or visa versa).
And to answer the question we asked ourselves - Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson wrote Monsters Inc. Congrats on a good job gentlemen.
This episode was so jam-packed I had to cut a few great stories. You'll have to wait for our 'out-takes' episode in a few weeks to hear more on this.
Thank you for listening and even considering cl...
Part 2 of the Interview with Mike's Dad: Ed Andrus
A huge thanks to Mike and his dad Ed for hanging out with myself and Sensei Jackie. Thank you. Very much like last week, today's conversation is all over the place. Strength and Power Part 2 - The Conversation Continues
I love when the conversation is so full, it takes two episodes. We start by continuing Sensei Liam's challenge of picking if his example is one of strength or power. Remember to let me know, so I can let him know, if you liked the game and if you agree or disagree with our opinions.
In this episode, where we talked a lot about internal growth, we also referenced a number of old episodes. Let's start the tags with a recent episode. Sensei Tracey brought up a book that talks about how to harness Fear - especially f...
Strength & Power Part 1; External / Internal and Amusing
Sensei Liam is back. He brought the subject of Strength and Power with him. We enjoyed it so much, we've added Part 2 for next week. Today's show focuses on the external applications.
