What’s Trending: Get the Lead Out
Trending today: the discovery that major US-based companies are still producing lead-based products and selling them in other countries (Mexico, for instance), even though they’re generally banned here. Aaron initially calls on those other countries to take the initiative and pass anti-lead laws – but then remembers that public pressure campaigns also do actually work, sometimes.

What’s Trending: Mayflies As Big As My Arm
Trending today: new scientific research that’s shedding new light on ancient giant bugs and why they’re not around anymore. (Turns out smaller bugs have an easier time evading predators.) Victor’s fascinated, albeit a little wigged out by the idea of enormous insects – though is that a scary thought because we instinctively hate all insects, or just because we’re not used to insects that large?

What’s Trending: You Got A Fast Car
Trending today: a fledgling news outlet in New York investigates the one driver who’s responsible for a big percentage of the city’s speeding tickets. Turns out it’s a NYPD officer – and turns out he’s not the only New York cop with a stack of unpaid parking tickets. Victor’s full of praise for the news outlet, but Aaron’s actually more impressed that someone figured out a way to exceed the speed limit in New York City at all, what with all that traffic.

One of the few bills passed by the North Carolina General Assembly this year was House Bill 696, which gave funding to Medicaid to cover the lack of federal support for the program. But the piece of legislation had other provisions attached that impact healthcare, including measures that add regulations to Applied Behavioral Analysis services (often used for people wit...
What We’re Thinking: Democrats Reclaiming the NC House?
This week, Tom and Aaron discuss new numbers that suggest a 13-point swing toward Democrats in 2026 versus 2024. That’s especially relevant in North Carolina: Republicans have gerrymandered legislative districts to give them a big advantage, but many of those districts favor the GOP by – you guessed it, roughly 13 points. Tom says if nothing changes between now and November (obviously a big ‘if’), Democrats could pick off a couple of those GOP-leaning U.S. House districts – and maybe even reclaim control of the North Carolina State House.

Entering the ‘Dreambell’: Live and Local with Island Moons!
Island Moons (Brandon Harwood) stopped by Live & Local this week, ahead of the release of his debut full-length album, “Dreambell.”
Follow Island Moons on Instagram.
“It’s been years in the making, if not a lifetime,” Harwood says of the album – which can also be read as two EPs, the more heavily-produced “Dream” followed by the mostly acoustic “Bell.” Both sides, in different ways, capture the hazy, folky, almost psychedelic vibe that’s implicit in Harwood’s writing, songs that capture the feel of half-recalled memories.
In fact some of his songs are directly about half-reca...
