In Matthew 5:3, Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” This verse has nothing to do with physical poverty. Instead, “poor in spirit” is an attitude of the heart, acknowledging that one cannot do anything worthwhile without God’s help. We must petition God for His wisdom and heart in every matter we face. In Joshua 14, besides Joshua, Caleb was the only person who was still alive from the previous generation who chose not to cross over into the promised land.  For 40 years Caleb wandered in the wilderness, but he held onto the promise from Moses that the next time they were given a chance to enter the promised land, it would be the perfect place for themselves and their families. In Joshua 10, five nations joined together to attack Israel, but with God’s help, Israel overcame them. When the 5 kings of these nations knew they had lost the battle, they ran and hid themselves in a cave. Others escaped back to their cities. When Joshua found out, he knew that the enemies had to be dealt with completely. Tune in as we learn how to pursue those things that need to be done until the task is complete.

In Joshua 9, Joshua was duped by his neighbors, the Gibeonites, who had conspired to do them harm. When the Gibeonites found out that God was with Israel, they hid their identity and posed as poor beggars hoping Israel would not kill them and instead make a deal not to harm them.
