Natural consequences

One of the most powerful ways of modifying child behavior is by allowing them to learn by seeing the natural progression of their actions. Children learn through consequences as this leaves an imprint in their memory that allows them to recall and generalize behavior.
Getting to the root cause

Some times children show maladaptive behavior because of an underlying condition or illness.
Even with the slightest flu, children exhibit behavioral changes such as clinginess, irritability, demotivation and tantrums. Understanding this and making allowances will go a long way in normalizing these behaviors and reduce the stress on parents/guardians.
Buddying up

One of the reasons children ‘ act out’ or misbehave is loneliness or lack of attention. Buddying up helps to avoid the maladaptive behavior by ensuring children have the stimulus of social and emotional feedback from somebody they value.
Click to hear more about this!
Avoiding triggers

A trigger is a situation or state that causes something to function.
Common triggers for children include hunger, temperature changes, loneliness, anger, need for attention, illness, soiling, etc.
Commonly triggers result in challenging behaviors.
Listen on to find out more about this connection and how to break the chain.

Removal

Negative reinforcement

Negative reinforcement is a substance if when removed can increase the occurrence of desirable behavior. Find out how to use this technique by listening to the episode
Redirection

Redirection is the reassignment of a child to an alternative behavior or task
This is common with young children or children with ADHD and/or ODD. Often times they engage in maladaptive or inappropriate behavior. They can be reassigned to another activity or task that is more beneficial or appropriate
Brain and behavior

Human behavior is generated, sustained and adjusted following very intricate and executive functions by the brain. Listen in to the chat by this upcoming pediatric neurologist to find out how and learn about how best to respond to your child's behavioral challenges.

Negative Reinforcement

Negative reinforcement is an action/substance which when applied to a child prevents them from engaging in certain behavior or causes a reduction in the occurrence of unwanted behavior.
Negative reinforcement can be used for behaviors that are repetitive, deliberate and that the child can modify with relative ease such as spitting, foul language, tardiness, messiness, rudeness and others and can ne used for both NT and ND children as long as they can understand what is going on.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement rewards good behavior as a means of increasing its occurrence. We need to ‘catch them being good.
Often times as parents, guardians, grand parents, teachers and all who take care of children, both neurodiverse and neurotypical wait till they misbehave then punish them for it. Do we offer guidance on what behavior is expected prior to them making a mistake?

Planned ignoring

Human brains are wired to increase investment/attention to what elicits a response from others. This is particularly true for children. They are sponges for attention whether positive or negative.
Notice what most children do when they do something new whether good or bad. They watch for parental/guardian response.
Planned ignoring is one of the easiest non violent methods of modifying child behavior. Listen in for more info.
