Smith's attorneys this week held a press conference pushing for Detroit police to dig deeper into what they say was a racially motivated hate crime.

Detroit attorney Todd Perkins, a former mayoral candidate, explains why, as a Black voter, he's skeptical of U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, but will probably vote for him — although reluctantly.

Appearing Friday as a panelist on the podcast "The Week That Was," Perkins said one of the issues that bothers him was when El-Sayed was part of the "uncommitted" voters' movement in Michigan in the February 2024 presidential primary, when President Joe Biden was the candidate. Republican strategist Jason Roe says it was "stupid" for ex-Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to drop out of the gubernatorial race as an independent, insisting "there was definitely a lane for him to win."

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans says he's lobbying community leaders to help pass a countywide public transportation millage that will fund and expand the SMART bus service.
