The Cubic Shenanigans Podcast

There is a bunch of stuff going on for the Cube Crew!  We talk first about our hobby plans for the next few months (decisions, decisions) and it’s going to be a lot of back and forth for Dan.  Next we talk about our local gaming activities over the next few month…again, lots of different choices and priorities…only so much time for hobby and gaming.  Finally, and this will be brief, we talk about “travel” plans for events that are a bit more of a drive.  Dan provides a preview into his RockCon shenanigans, and Dave talks Heresy…w...

It’s all Bigs and Littles time as we review the new Sons of Behemat Battletome.  Very mixed reaction to this one…overall needs some help and not a lot of interest among the crew.  There were some bright spots though…so give it a listen and decide for yourselves.  We also have fun with event recaps.  Dave and Dan went to Dragonfall, where Dave ran and Dan played in Horus Heresy events.  Brendan and Dan made it to PantsCon and it was a great time with great friends just playing games and hanging out.  Be sure to listen to This or T...

The chonky Ogors are back with a great new Battletome!  This book is much more synergystic, with the ability to build Ogor armies from across all three subfactions.  A great refresh for a classic Sigmar faction.  Of course, Dan wasn’t too hot on this book until he dived into it with Brendan and Dave…now it’s all Gluttons and Cav!  Dave talks to us about the unique way terrain works in Horus heresy, and of course, of the usual shenanigans.

Thanks as always for joining us.  Your support is truly appreciated.

The crew is back together just in time for some Slaanesh fun!  A pile of heroes and a few solid units, but the two Armies of Renown hit it out of the ballpark!  Whether it’s the Twins or Sigvald, both Armies provide the potential for a great gaming experience that will drive your opponents crazy…laughter also guaranteed.  Dave is also back with yet another way to play Heresy…Zone Mortalis.  Be aware that Dan had to reign in his cohosts during This or That…otherwise, we would be well on our way to becoming another sports podcast (LOLOL).

WE ARE BACK!  Dan is in full recovery mode after his knee replacement, and the guys have some catching up to do!  We talk Summer Battlescroll and the GHB 26-27.   Dave and Dan also discuss the renewed interest in “skirmish” games and provide some commentary based on our own interest and experiences.  Brendan was unable to join us but provided a bundle of notes that ensure he is with us in spirit at the least.  Just great to be back on speaker and podcasting again!

Thanks as always for joining us.  Your support is truly appreciated.

Time for a walk in the woods…a Sylvaneth Battletome redux.  This could also be considered podcast comfort food for Dan & Brendan since we both enjoy this army so much.  We are also joined by cohost Dave, not for Liber Nordsturmus, but for a fun reaction to the Friday Preview from the week before.  A great variety of reveals, mostly hits, a few misses.  Of course, the usual podcast fare for our listeners as well.  We will be discussing the new GHB and the Summer Battlescroll in the next episode…my poor SpiteRevs!  Maybe even some Scourge of Aqshy discussion...

Yes, Cogforts are cool…Dan has been enlightened.  As for the rest of the Cities Battletome, another solid delivery.  We really enjoyed discussing all aspects of this tome, from Traits to Artifacts to Units to Armies/Regiments of Renown.  However, Brendan warns that this is a very complex book that will take a lot of study and practice to get the most out of.  Conversely, very rewarding and powerful once mastered.  Watch out for those perpetually charging Cavaliers!  Dave is back as well to discuss the desert planet of Tallarn and its part in the Horus heresy.  Also, be sure to g...

You need to add a widget, row, or prebuilt layout before you’ll see anything here. 🙂

The long lost Elven relic has been found…we finally review the Lumineth Realm Lords Battletome! Those Runes are quite the puzzle to solve, but they are powerful for sure. Talk about magic…almost every Hero in this book is a wizard! A solid book, but not for the beginner…those seeking a challenge will certainly be rewarded when they figure this one out. We also briefly discuss the “stand on rectangles” change to objective rules in 40K and how it may impact those of us who...

Amid the sea of Cogfort madness, there is an island of calm…Dave and Dan are going to talk about miniatures games that are not Sigmar!  Say it isn’t so!  We thought it would be refreshing and provide a bit of perspective to deep dive some of the “other” games we play.   How to get started?  How do turns work?  How does shooting and combat work?  How do you win?  We hope you enjoy the change of pace as much as we did…Kill Team rocks!  In Liber, Dave talks us through Heresy Assassins.  By the way, don’t forget to drop us a...

Another awesome tome!  So many moving parts for these glass cannons with knives, but when they all come together, most frightening!  A Shadow Queen that can be resurrected, a manifestation that removes Ward Saves…and there’s more.  Like the Treelord Ancient in the last episode, Brendan again gives Dan pause in his excitement for a Hero in this book…what could it be?  The big question…will Dan be throwing down with a four Shrine list…and a large side order of Blood Hags with that please!

Thanks as always for joining us.  Your support is truly appreciat...

The guys are most excited about this book, and rightfully so.  The Sylvaneth Battletome has arrived at a store near you, and will soon be overgrowing the battlefields!  The Tree problem has been solved and this book is packed with solid Warscrolls and solid rules.  We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed reviewing this awesome Tome.  Be warned…The Everqueen is better than ever!

Four days of an alternate reality…known better as Adepticon!  The crew is all here, and we recap our days at this great event.  Dave brings us some Heresy lore recs in Liber, and Brendan runs us through the April Battlescroll.  Lots going on…plenty of great listening.  Congratulations to all of our friends who won awards this year, as well as to Brendan and his team for another incredible creation!  Also, one of the best parts of Adepticon is seeing friends, some of which we have not seen for literally years!  Hope everyone who made it had a great time...

If you’ve got the bones, they are happy to do business…Ossiarch Bonereapers Battletome review time!  Despite some issues, mostly related to points, this book has some interesting back-of-the-house choices, including scary Manifestations and two solid Armies of Renown.  Dan despises those Crawlers…leave my trees alone!  Dave was unable to join us…he was hard at work hosting the Universe of Armoured Fighting Vehicles Regional Series.  He will of course be joining us for the ACon Recap in Episode 186.  Speaking of Adepticon, safe travels to all those heading to Milwaukee in the next several days.

Smoke and mirrors, illusions & fate…all parts of the grand plans of the master of change!  We really enjoyed the entirely new way this army will play.  We try to unravel the complex interactions of the new rule set, as well as some of the crazy potential for silliness…for you, not your opponent!  A great book in our opinion…

Another Battlescroll…meh.  Not real excited about this one, but some significant changes that need to be discussed, especially for those Khorne players out there.  Also, we finally reveal Dan’s Mystery Army for March of the Phalanx.  A few pics will be dropped on the Pants Mafia Discord and maybe on Facebook as well.  There is also a great deal of excitement in the studio for Papa Nurgle’s Battletome…get ready for a wild ride in Episode 182!

Looks like those Chaos Dwarves got some solid updates…not looking forward to another matchup against these evil mechanics.  In the spirit of the holidays though, we present a collection of Christmas boxes designed by the podcast crew themselves!  Not too serious…just some fun toss-togethers to get those wallets interested.  Cohost Dave joins us for Emperor Lies.  Of course, let’s not forget the return of our cohost Brendan, who provides the REAL story behind his absence…no more allegations..#kingcrab!  Thanks as always to our sponsor, Universe of Armored Fighting Vehicles…

Taking a look into the not-so-distant future, we share our thoughts on the most recent Warhammer Previews!  The latest Warhammer Quest is full of fantastic models and here’s to hoping for some solid game play as well.  The Nurgle preview was also amazing.  Lots of other listening goodies sprinkled throughout the show.   Dave also provides us with what we are hopeful is our last #freebrendanmelnick update.  Thanks as always to our sponsor, Universe of Fighting Vehicles…

Here we go…no matter what you call them, the Helsmiths are here!  Dan & Dave have a good time reviewing this tome, as it is a new faction and has some very unique rules and great models!  Brendan has provided fire support in the form of notes on his thoughts about the book, so we are locked and loaded.  In Liber Nordstrumus, Dave talks to us about another new faction (with free rules!), the Black Shields.  Importantly, Dave also provides us with an update regarding #freebrendanmelnick.

Back in the saddle again with Dan & Dave!  We start out with a Horus Heresy rules breakdown (Tactical Statuses) and then a Dragonfall Recap by two guys who didn’t even play in the event…but trust me, we were out and about the entire weekend.  Our main topic this go is a Sigmar rules critique and some hot takes…we hope our thoughts and rules choices create some discussion.  Rest assured we still enjoy the game, just that once in a while it’s good to dig down a bit and express our opinions.  And most importantly, #freebrendanmelnick!

Thanks...

The dark reflection of reality is here…cannibal courts!  Something here for just about everyone.  Quite a bit more excited about this Battletome than the last one…Dan might be playing “how to train your (zombie) dragon” in the near future!  Strong traits, warscrolls, artifacts, lores…the whole package with several ways to play.  One for two with the Armies of Renown, and the knight focused army is the clear winner.  Dave introduces us to the newest faction in Horus Heresy…Daemons of the Ruinstorm!  Never a dull moment on the Cube…

Despair is in the air…time to review the new angry ghost book.  Although not thrilled with what we got, we still try to stay positive and look for solutions…which will be a challenge for sure.  That being said, Brendan talks about a unit that he feels is a huge mistake…listen to find out which one!  Very fun rules change for Lady O…she is nigh near unkillable and may be the only unit you still have on the table at the end of some games!  In Liber Nordtrumus, Dave talks us through the new Liber Militia…a free downloa...

Anchors away…it’s boat people time!  While Brendan if off doing stuff that needs doing, Dave and I take you on a journey through the clouds with everyone’s favorite flying Duardin.  Neither of us was excited to review this book, but the more we dived in, the more we enjoyed it.  By the end of the review, we agreed that this is a solid, if inconsistent, book.  One of the Regiments of Renown was of interest to all three of us, and we’ll see how many times it appears in the wild.  In Liber Nordtrumus, Dave walks us thro...

A long but loaded show for you!  In our Battletome review, host Brendan becomes enraged, for a brief time, as he shares his thoughts on one of the Armies of Renown!  Dave joins us for the entire show…it is Blades of Khorne after all…and talks about the first Heresy Journal Tactica.  Brendan also talks us through the highlights of the recent Sigmar FAQ.  Pretty much something for everyone.  This Battletome is a beast, so be sure to use those time stamps to guide your listening enjoyment.

A new Battletome to review…and we are ready to talk Idoneth Deepkin!  More than a refresh, this one seems to be a ground up reimagining.  Very unique Battle Traits, some new heroes and a sprinkling of great abilities throughout the book.  Bloodthirsty Shiver, one of the new Regiments of Renown, is Dan’s favorite of the book.  Dave joins us for the next installment of Liber Nordstrumus (formerly Heresy Hangout) to discuss some short lived controversy, also known as the Drop Site Rules Massacre, and some recommendations regarding getting started with product.  Also a quick recap of Dan’s Brew City...

With a bit of the road under our feet, thought it was time to walk through a couple of Indexes to see how they shape up in the new General’s Handbook.  We chose Sylvaneth and Nighthaunt for a first go…we may certainly do this again if folks would like us to continue and as time permits.  We also have a new segment on the show called Heresy Hangout…listen to the Show Open for a bit of back story to find out how this came to pass.  Cohost Dave, a solid Heresy fanboy, will be leading out discussio...

It’s a great time to be a Sigmar player!  The new GHB, including new battle tactics rules and battle plans, is a real refresh for the game.  From army building to rolling dice, the game seems more dynamic, more fun and more interesting.  Cohost Dave joins us this episode, and we each pick a couple of tactics and battle plans to review in detail…a bit of theatre of the mind for those battle plan reviews to be sure!  Really looking forward to giving this new rules set a go.  We also spend a moment finishing off the last two...

As we talk through the latest drop of Scourge of Ghyran, it is good, bad and ugly this go around.  Rotigus is a clear favorite of the guys, and some other gems in this new content are worthy of a look.  For us, it is again new options that hopefully will motivate folks to try some creative list building and refresh what we’re seeing on the table.  Please note that my Sylvaneth dropped the day after we recorded, and I am quite happy with it…we will discuss briefly in Episode 169.  Also exciting that the new GHB and gear wen...

Just a few weeks ago we were asking where all of the promised Battletomes were…now it’s raining content!  Scourge of Gyrhan is here, and there is plenty to talk about.  We also get a peek at the changes to All-Out Attack & Defense, and Dan scores a Tactics bullseye!  Lots of great stuff…join us for a solid listen.

Welcome to Milwaukee and Adepticon 2025!  We had a blast and very different experiences over our four days there.  So many good things to say, so many great changes.  Brendan took home a boat load of medals and Dan met one of his favorite GW authors!  Sigmar Teams, Youngbloods, paint judging and The Pit…lots of gaming goodness.  Oh, and there is a Spring Battlescroll (yawn!).

There’s plenty of stuff in the new Gloomspite Gitz Battletome…Gitz (and Squigs), Trolls, Spiders, and something new…lots of wolves!  There are so many moving parts here and so many combinations of units that the book can seem a bit overwhelming.  While we found the Armies of Renown to be watered down versions of the rest of the book, the new Gitmob Regiment of Renown has lots of potential.  Safe travels to those heading to Adepticon this week…so grateful to have it in my hometown this year!

Thought we would tackle something that many Sigmar players think about…how do I deal with those units that are just a pain in the butt?  Dan calls out a unit, and Brendan gives us some rules context then offers some thoughts on ways to deal with these problems.  Remember, some problems may not have good solutions!  We also take some time to offer our thoughts on planning paint and basing projects.  For some, these ideas may already be part of your hobby…we’re hoping there will be something for hobbyists of all levels.  Also, if you’ve listened to V...

Cohost Dave and I wander into the outlands of our hobby and gaming experience…we talk small events, hobby table stuffs and yes, a bit more discussion of the world outside of the Mortal Realms.  Rest assured that continued discussion of other gaming systems is not indicative of moving our focus from Age of Sigmar.  We do, however, feel we need to acknowledge that many of us find interest in other places as part of our hobby and gaming experience.  That all being said, there is plenty of laughter and merriment in this episode, so listen in and have a gre...

Lots and lots of dice have been rolled recently by The Cube crew…mostly Brendan.  Event recaps with LOTS of crazy happenings…very enjoyable.  But first, Dan takes us to a land that is not Games Workshop, where miniature games flourish and folks have a great time!  So many listeners are, or will soon be, engaged with very unique, non-Warhammer miniature gaming systems…I thought it would be interesting to talk about this a bit.  Otherwise, all the regular kit.  Apologies to dear friend Kenny…for some reason I did not mention Kings of War which I know is a passion of...

Whoa…two factions in one battletome!  Ironjawz and Kruleboyz bringing the hurt and the sneakiness.  Not too excited for this one except for the beefy Spearhead.  That being said, we Cube this bad boy in our usual way and have a great time doing it.  The “big pig” army of renown in the app (it’s not in the book) looks pretty fun too.  That Ironjawz army of renown might be showing up a bit more often now…faster than you think and those Ardboyz are just chonky!

The first show of 2025…Happy New Year!  It appears that GDub actually listened to the community as the December ’24 Battlescroll has some meaningful changes.  There is a ton of stuff in this document, and we tried to get to the most impactful changes.  Right at the start there are important changes to the Seasonal Rules.  Lots of other faction specific updates as well.  Not a long show, but an important one.   By the way…enjoy this relatively short episode…another Battletome incoming next episode…you know what that means!

Having some fun in the spirit of the season…a look back at 2024, Cube style…including our annual Christmas gift exchange.  Cohost Dave joins Dan & Brendan for a show filled with laughs and plenty of surprises.  Just a heads up…Dave is not actually recording with us and will be speaking in the 3rd person…what?!  Thanks to everyone for making this a great year for the show.  Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and here’s hoping you have a wonderful holiday season with friends and family.
