The Other Half

Another Spooktacular ends, and what better way to close it out than with Halloween Ends—the final movie in the reboot trilogy. This time, we're talking about Corey and how he's madly in love with Michael Myers. Apparently, all it takes to make someone completely unhinged is to stare deep into Michael's creepy eyes.

Expect plenty of face trauma and heavy horny energy coursing through this movie. Original final girl Laurie Strode is busy writing a memoir about surviving Michael a million times, which naturally makes the entire town hate her. Meanwhile, Laurie's granddaughter, Allison, has to na...

Oh yes, Pinocchio Unstrung is finally a movie just for us. This is strangely enough the second Pinocchio horror movie we watched for the podcast. Maybe, just maybe, it might actually be better. Can the folks who brought you Pooh: Blood and Honey actual make a compelling horror movie?

Well considering they're using an absolute ton of practical effects, that truly buys the movie a lot of brownie points with this podcast. But the most important question coming from these Pinocchio heads, what liberties do they take? Is this actually a good adaptation? Where is the blue...

Continuing our Gen Z horror trip we watch It Ends. A movie that's all about life and existential dread. But mostly it's about if you must choose two options to defend you and the rest come and attack you which would you choose? 10,000 rats, 50 hawks, five gorillas, or one guy with a gun?

Great question in fact let's ignore how the world that we're forced to live in seems to be becoming a more dark and hostile place to live every day and discuss theoretical questions that will never happen in our lift times.

Don't...

Happy Halloween Spooktacular and we are starting off with a BANG! Obsession is one of the most profitable movies ever released and hugely popular. But does this little indie flick deserve the attention it gets?

Join us this week as we talk about the dynamic between Bear and Nikki and how the gender roles are flipped. I don't need to write more of a description about this movie huh? I'm sure you've already watched hundreds of YouTube essays about this movie.

Legend of the Guardians was a movie with maybe one of the longest titles of all time. I'm not even going to write it out in this description because it would make it too long; SEO be damned. Planned to watch this movie back when Sam Neil passed away, which now feels like forever ago. Regardless this movie is one of the first movies where Zach Snyder we feel wanted to show he had range. He wanted to say, "I don't just make movies about shirtless men who kick people into holes and super hero movies! I can make...

After finishing up the Maze Runner series, we can't get enough of Wes Ball. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was his latest movie before he gears up to make the Legend of Zelda movie. What weirdly seems like the start of a new trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place after all of the apes have already established colonies on earth.

Caesar from the first three movies is long dead, but his legacy lives on. The movie wrestles with what it means to follow a leader and how iconic leader's messages and...

Look it wasn't a hard Watch 'Til You Can't, but we completed another series! Maze Runner: The Death Cure shows what happens when a major city still stands during apocalyptic days. Old friends return, some friends die, it's all coming to an end for 'ol Thomas and the rest of the Gladers. Let's wrap up this epic conclusion!

Watch 'Til You Can't, continues with the second Maze Runner movies, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. What lies beyond the maze? Turns out it's Gustavo Fring and Alita Battle Angel! They're here to stop WICKED and help the escaped Gladers find a safe space, well maybe not initially. Alan Tudyk is here in a very weird but fun role. Will the boys continue watching after seeing what's beyond the maze? You'll have to listen to find out!

By popular request, the boys watch The Maze Runner series for Watch 'Til You Can't! Plus honor has been restored to Watch 'Til You Can't. We're no longer doubling up. We're experiencing Thomas, Minho, Newt and Theresa's story week-to-week now.

Thomas wakes up in a mysterious maze and has to discover what the heck is going on here. Why does the maze open up during the day and is crawling with horrible creatures known as griever? Why Gally such a sourpuss? What secrets do the maze hold? Hopefully we'll find out in this adaptation of the popular...

It's the end of this a'Mazin month with the boys watching The Huntsman Winter's War. A prequel/sequel to Snow White and The Huntsman, but without the snow white part (Kristen Stewart). Mazin apparently had a lot of fun writing a film filled with knock off fairy tale tropes, awful goblin designs and dwarf jokes about their women-folk's appearance. Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain star in this movie where also Charlize Theron is supposed to appear at some point considering how large she looms in the poster.

Will the boys find this magical land charming or a...

We're just cravin' more Mazin, with Senseless! This is one of his earliest movies and stars Marlon Wayans and David Spade. Marlon is struggling at college and takes and experimental drug to gain super senses! Unfortunately he takes too much and loses all of his senses! oh no the wacky hijinks!

Look I know we hate doing comedy movies for the podcast, but we had to do it for Craig and honestly, we may be funnier than the movie.

Mike and Ethan continue their journey of this special month of Dog Days of Mazin. This week, the boys split the 2013’s box-office hit Identity Thief, starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy.

Join us as we navigate a movie that kicks off with Sandy getting punched in the throat, kicked in the balls, and car-rammed across the good ol' US of A. This movie tests the "Craig vs. Mazin" scale. Can you even rate his movies on a binary scale? Pull up a chair, hide your credit cards, and let’s find out if this movie is wort...

Hungover from Canada month we try another dubiously themed month (we're addicted!!). The creator of Chernobyl and The Last of Us (the show not the game!), Craig Mazin, has a very interesting filmography and we thought it was the right time to examine it. Welcome to Dog days of Mazin!

We kick off the month with a rough one y'all. The Hangover III. The biggest cash grab on a franchise that has no right to last as long as it did. But Mazin worked on both Hangover III and Hangover II, which are the lowest rated Hangover...

This week on The Other Half, we’re closing out our annual Canada Month series with our wonderful friend Madison to tackle 2013's Dallas Buyers Club. A movie that qualifies for our Canadian theme solely because its late, great director, Jean-Marc Vallée, came from Quebec!

Join us as we break down a movie that starts with Matthew McConaughey watching bull riding during a rodeo hookup(?!), collapsing into a pile of nudie magazines, and reacting to a 30-day terminal AIDS diagnosis by immediately doing lines of coke and drinking whiskey in the dark. What a way to set...

This week on The Other Half, Mike and Ethan near the finish line of Canada Month by tackling the cult classic sports comedy Goon.

Join us as we navigate an opening ten minutes completely derailed by the modern redefinition of "gooning" and a strong warning for anyone Googling the name of this movie without context.

I wish we could hire a goon to take out Jay Baruchel’s insufferable edge lord character. Grab your skates, protect your neck, and let’s dive into this Canadian comedy!

Okay let's get a little timely, a little Canadian and a little Letterboxy, with Blue Heron. A relatively new director, Sophy Romvari, puts out a semi-auto biographical banger about growing up with a "strange" sibling. The movie plays with memory, time and audience perspective an a refreshing and controlled way. This movie blew up on Letterboxed in a big way and it's Canadian, so it felt like a good chance of pace from the previous films we did.

The movie is about a Hungarian immigrant family with the POV being 8-year-old Sasha and her adult self reflecting...

Canada month wouldn't be complete unless the USA got in the way! This week Mike and Ethan dive headfirst into Michael Moore’s only scripted narrative feature, Canadian Bacon. A movie that was poorly reviewed in 1995 but feels a little too accurate today.

What's better than starting a war for a measly 30-point poll boost? Well maybe eating fast food in the white house, a presidential candidate attempted assassination, using propaganda to scare people into hating others from another nation will make you think differently. Also, what a cast in this movie. Is this Michael Moore guy ac...

Happy Canada Month, let's watch Oh, Canada! despite admittedly knowing very little about Canada besides Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny, Scott Pilgrim, and the film My Winnipeg. But we're hoping that a whole month dedicated to Canada and all of it's movies will change that!

Unfortunately besides being called Oh, Canada, this movie barely takes place in Canada in fact, Jacob Elordi spends most of his dang time right at the border of Canada!

Join us as we unpack Paul Schrader's obsession with miserable men narrating their own existential dread, debate whether digital photography is bad...

We close out Steven Stinkers with one of his latest stinkers, the BFG. Now we want to mention that The BFG is a silly name. Because compared to other giants, he's actually pretty small. Should be called the LFG to be honest. But that's just a wittle twingy twanger that bothers us. Mark Rylance stars as the BFG and despite being a character that's fully CGI, he does a great performance. That can be attributed to the special effects presented in the movie. The main character, Sophie, goes to giant land and the practical effects mixed with the CGI...

Steven is back with a movie about a horse that goes into war. Imagine World War I but through the eyes of a horse. It actually kind of feels like a Disney movie that way it all comes together. That makes sense considering it was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures so it kind of lines up. Surprisingly a PG-13 movie of this style kind of works even thought WWI was one of the bloodiest wars of all time.

Join us as we unpack a movie that is somehow equal parts Saving Private Ryan and Racing...

We continue our Steven Stinker's month with another one from his collection of flops, 1941! A movie he had made fairly soon after Jaws. Which is a curious choice considering this movie starts with a Jaws visual gag. It's a choice. Just like making a choice to parody 1941 in America. Not always the funniest of times then. You can consider most of these choices to be "funny" ideas on paper, but executed poorly. For example Christopher Lee as a Nazi and Slim Pickins as a California bumpkin stuck in a U-Boat sounds hilarious! But in reality it's kind of odd...

What's up y'all, Steven Spielberg is in the house with our new month of Steven Stinkers! These are all the movies that the most prolific man in Hollywood made that made the least amount of money. We're starting with the lowest one first, Sugarland Express. To be fair, at this point he wasn't a household name yet, so we can see why it didn't make a lot of money. But quality wise, a "true" story about love and crime starring Goldie Hawn has to at least be entertaining to watch right?

We say goodbye to Mays Days with Byzantium, which is like if Twilight was for emotionally immature adults! Daniel Mays is in this movie as a young man who is down on his luck and just wants to spend 50 quid on a sex act. Luckily the vampire mom and daughter squad take a liking to him and use his house to start a new brothel in this rundown small town. But trouble follows these two vampires played by Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton. Will they be able to get themselves out of the grasp of vampires who hunt vampires!?<...

Nanny McPhee Returns stars Emma Thompson and is also written by Emma Thompson who apparently loves a cheeky fart joke. Mike says F them kids as they're so mean to our boy Daniel Mays who drives around the rich kids in this movie. Don't worry though, Nanny McPhee is here to whip those kids into shape. Oh also Maggie Gyllenhaal for some reason as the mom?

Mays Days continues with Mr Nobody and more than ever are we regretting our decision. Mr. Nobody follows Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto) as he goes through his memories and all of the different choices he would have made. The movie is meant to be incoherent, but luckily Daniel Mays is there to help set things straight! He plays the "Young Reporter" who interviews Mr Nobody. If you enjoy listening to the boys suffer trying to grasp a plot, this is an episode for you!

Okay so we're starting something strange. We're going to be dedicating a whole month to looking at Daniel Mays, the character actor, and seeing where his career takes us. We did something similar with Barbera Streisand and it turned out to be a lot of fun, but what about someone that not a lot of people have heard about? We start off with a Chris Columbus movie, The Thursday Murder Club starring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan as old retirees who go around solving cold case murders.

For our final Rom Com month movie, we watch a recent film called Regretting You. It's about two lover who well... actually you know it's best if you don't know at all what happens before listening to this podcast because it gets WEIRD.

Say Anything is a classic romance movie with the famous boombox scene. But we never knew anything else about the movie. We thought it could end up being another one of those poorly aged John Hughes movies, but Cameron Crowe actually pulled off something significantly less problematic. In fact there's a massive subplot about the protagonist's dad ripping off old people? How many kisses does it deserve tho?

Runaway Bride is a romantic comedy that is a real trip. What if they used the same cast as Pretty Woman and made it about a bad columnist and just a small town woman who can't stop running away from this mid-as-hell men! Most importantly, the Virtual Boy makes an appearance.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is like a Rom Com for the apathetic Gen X generation. It feels similar to Saint Elmo's fire, but stars a group of friends who are not so miserable. The movie follows a group of friends, with Hugh Grant in the center, and takes places around these five entirely life changing events. It's an interesting concept, but how does it work in practice?

Welcome to Rom Com month! We're kicking this off with Shakespeare in Love. A movie that won Best Picture back when it was released because Harvey Weinstein poured a ton of money into promoting it. Or is it actually because it's a good movie? Ethan and Mike take a look at the period piece to see how it holds up.

Ethan got Gran Turismo, a video game movie, into racing month?! He sure did and to his surprise, it's very very similar to F1, but with a key difference. It's actually based off a true story. Orlando Boom and David Harbour star in this epic tale of a kid who learned how to drive real race cars based on a video game. Oh excuse me it's not a video game, it's a racing simulator.

Don't forget to join our Discord for movie nights and additional podcast discussions!

Oh boy, a talking animal movie counts as a racing movie? Of course it does! Racing Stripes stars Frankie Muniz as a Zebra who thinks he's a race horse. He finds a found family at a ranch after he was abandoned from a Circus. These wild group of characters include Hayden Panettiere, Dustin Hoffman, Whoopi Goldberg, Mandy Moore, Steve Harvey, David Spade, Snoop Dogg, Joe Pantoliano, Jeff Foxworthy, Michael Clarke Duncan and yeah I think that's enough. Hayden Panettiere is a person tho, not an animal. Anyway this episode went of the rails real quick when we started talking...

Now that we've seen (basically) all of the Oscar-nominated best picture movies and the Academy Awards for 2026 are only a few days away, it's time to talk about our predictions and rank our favorites! Lots of great movies came out and F1!

Also Oscar BINGO returns this year so be sure to grab your PDF here or play online at this cool free website this one guy made that I found on Reddit.

Chariots of Fire marks when Oscar season bleeds into our new month all about racing movies! This movie won Best Picture in 1982, but Mike's dad said the movie was just about a bunch of guys racing. Is this movie based on a true story about how two guys brought glory to England through running in the Olympic games actually good? Or is this another Crash, Green Book, or Driving Miss Daisy.

ZOOM ZOOM It's F1 time! Dad movies are back in the Oscars!! A script written by AI, shallow characters, mediocre cinematography, and Brad Pitt phoning it in, we're ready to unpack one of the biggest movies of the year. It's also the last movie we're watching for Oscar month. Though I know this is technically in March. This movie IMO felt like I knocked off Avatar 3 from being nominated as the "crowd favorite", but which is more deserving of an Oscar nomination?

The Secret Agent is a movie about the dictatorship in Brazil, similar to I'm Still Here from last year, that's often funny, irreverent, but at the same time has heart and throws pretty dark. We follow a man who is going by a secret identity and we learn more about his past as the movie continues on. This is also the most confusing second half of a movie Ethan has ever seen. So if you're into the boys solving a mystery (that's obvious for anyone watching a film normally) you're going to enjoy this episode!

Don't forget...

All about Train Dreams! A movie that starts off kind of normal, but then becomes Tree of Life? It's all about being a forrester. Wait a second. This movie is kind of like Forrest Gump if he stayed out of the spotlight and had bad things happen to him. I haven't really thought about this take until I started writing the description for this podcast. Not sure if this take holds up, but I'm going to leave it here in my stream of consciousness post.

Continuing our 2026 Oscar run with Sentimental Value! The Norwegian movie starring Stellan Skarsgard and that lady from The Worst Person in the World. This is basically what I imagine what it's like if your dad is Werner Herzog. This podcast goes places and for some reason, we talk about Dorf from the Carol Burnett show?? I guess we were just feeling sentimental.

Queue the Oscar music, it's time for Hamnet! We're recording this before the Oscars are annouced so we hope it's the correct choice. Hamnet is an attempt to tell the story of how William Shakespeare's son inspired the famous play Hamlet. Mostly, though, it focuses on Will's wife, Agnes, and her story. Mike explains the story of Hamlet from the perspective of The Lion King, since that's the only thing Ethan has ever seen.
