079 - Ark of God Returned

God was not pleased with Eli. The high priest knew his two sons were sinning in the sanctuary of the Lord. They didnât even try to hide it. Still Eli hadnât stopped them. God told him that his family would be judged. The Lord said, âI will do something that will cause people to shudder when they hear about it.â
When Eli was 98 years old, the Philistines made war with Israel. The army went out to defend their nation, but they lost the battle and 4,000 men were killed.

Hannah couldnât have children. This tormented her so much that she went to the Tabernacle and begged God for a child. She said, âOh Lord, if youâll give me a son, Iâll give him back to you and heâll serve you for the rest of his life.â
Eli, the high priest, noticed that Hannah was moving her mouth but she wasnât saying anything. He thought she was drunk. âWoman, put away your wine!â

Things did not go well there. They lived in Moab for ten years. During that time, the man died, the two sons married Moabite women, and then the sons died. Naomi was left alone with her two daughters-in-law.

The person who judged Israel at the time was a prophet named Deborah. When the people had problems among themselves, they went to a place called the âPalm Tree of Deborah.â She would sit there and hear their complaints and then settle their disagreements.

A group of men from the city of Gibeon dressed up in old clothes and worn-out sandals. They put old sacks on their donkeys, packed stale dry bread, and carried old wineskins.

Before conquering Jericho, Joshua had made it clear to the people, âBe careful! Donât take anything that is set aside for the Lord, or you will be set aside for destruction.â
One of the soldiers that went into Jericho that day was a man named Achan. There he saw a bag of silver coins, a bar of gold, and a beautiful coat from Babylon. He took them and hid them inside his tent. This angered the Lord.

Joshua told the priests, âTake the Ark of God, and go to the Jordan River.â So the priests carried the Ark of God to the river, which was at flood stage. When they came to the waterâs edge, they kept going until the water covered their feet.
