In this podcast, I will be uploading reader versions of services in the Byzantine Rite, on the Revised Julian Calendar, mostly according to the usage of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. These are meant as guides to accompany and even direct life in the domestic church. We all live much busier lives than our ancestors, whose rural living in tight-knit villages around their parish churches allowed them to live their lives to the rhythm of the Church Year. We, however, often find ourselves commuting long distances or working longer hours which don't allow us the luxury of daily church attendance...

The Order of Great Compline, with the Canon of the Saint of one of the days of Holy Week and Bright Week. On the 6th Monday we take the Canon of the saint of Bright Friday, this year May 10th: The Holy Apostle Simon the Zealot. St Simon's feast is of sufficient rank that it will be combined with Bright Week celebrations this year. Therefore at today's Compline the Canon that of supplication to the Theotokos for the day and tone of the week, found under Compline here:

There are two commemorations for this day: The Transfer of the Relics of St Nicholas from Myra to Bari & the Holy Prophet Isaias and the Holy Martyr Christopher. The Order of Matins for the 5th Thursday of the Great Fast, which is always (unless the celebration of the Annunciation dictate a change) when we sing the Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete.
Many celebrate this as a vigil on the evening of the 5th Wednesday and that is why this is being published now.
It has also become popular in some places to separate the Great Canon from Matins on the 5th Thursday and use it as a devotional service instead of Vespers or Presanctified on the Thursday evening although the origin...

5th Wednesday Vespers, Great Canon
The Order of the 9th Hour, Typika & Vespers for the 5th Wednesday of the Great Fast; every year the 5th Thursday is reserved for the chanting of the Great Penitential Canon of St Andrew of Crete and the saint is not commemorated (moved to Small Compline later). Instead we have the Alphabetical Stikhera (24 to the number of letters in the Greek Alphabet) meditating on the same themes as the Great Canon.

On the 5th Tuesday we would take the Canon of the saint of Bright Wednesday, this year May 8th: The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologion; but this year that saint is important enough to be combined with the Bright Week celebrations. The Order of the 9th Hour, Typika & Vespers for the 5th Tuesday of the Great Fast (being the 5th Week, the psalter readings are adjusted to allow for the Great Canon on Thursday Matins), beginning the commemoration of April 17th: The Holy Hieromartyr Symeon, Bishop of Persia & Our Father Among the Saints Acacius, Bishop of Melitene. During Lent, the 2nd saint's stikhera are moved to the Praises at the end of Matins.
