The Parable of the Weeds

Repairers Of The Breach: Confession & Collective Responsibility

Continuing in our sermon series Elder Abigail reflects on the theme of repair  within the church and society, particularly focusing on issues of racial division and white supremacy. Drawing from the book of Ezra, Abigail emphasizes the importance of worship as central to the identity of God's people. The historical context of the Israelites' return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple serves as a metaphor for the need to restore authentic worship in the modern church. Too often the American church has prioritized economic pursuits and theological rhetoric over genuine worship and community engagement.

Repairers Of The Breach: Addressing Injustice

This sermon focuses on the account in Acts 6 of a dispute between Hellenistic and Hebraic Jewish widows.  The apostles respond to inequity by empowered leaders who are members of the marginalized group to develop a plan to address the injustice in the community.  This sermon focuses on the importance of surrendering power in order to ensure that those who have the least power are able to experience equity within Christian community.  It challenges all of us to consider the cost of the type of community we believe God wants us to embody.

In the second week of our new sermon series, Pastor Nathan draws from the traumatic story found in Numbers chapter 21. God punishes Israel for their disobedience by sending venomous snakes among them and instructs Moses to lift up a bronze serpent as their path towards healing. 

The sermon connects Israel’s trauma with the reality of racial trauma today, emphasizing that the path to racial healing today involves facing the very realities that have harmed us.
