Just Going For A Drive
Do you like just going for a drive? Just for the pleasure of it? Do you have a favourite car? Do you have a nemesis car? One that's always in the way? This is the podcast for you. We are two comedians, talking about cars and the people who drive around us. Each episode we dissect what on Earth these people are doing on the roads in the first place, share a car story, and discuss our Car of the Week.Write in and tell us your car story! justgoingforadrive@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Season 4, Ep. 1 - Top Gear Special Special
The show that started it all for so, so many people. The hosts, the cars, the stories and, yes, the legends, that made you feel like you were one of the gang, there for the ride, and in on the joke. That's right, people: Just Going For A Drive is BACK!
And we are kicking off Season 4 with a classic misdirect episode description which also ties us straight to the enigma of Top Gear. We don't even need to clarify which version, because, at the end of it all, there is only one.
We...
Season 3, Ep. 10 - Xmas, Parking and The Wave
WHAT are these people doing? They've carefully (SO carefully) stowed their shopping, tucked little Baby On Board into the cryocapsule, turned the car on, and put it in reverse. Now they're not moving. Those white lights tell the world that they're ready to back over some slow-moving fellow shoppers, but nothing is happening. YOU have been blocking up Xmas car park traffic for seven straight minutes now. The queue stretches well past the boomgate. A fellow car park shopper is fogging your back window with their meaty breath, unwilling to defy the laws of indicator-means-my-park, but Jesus Mary Joseph...
Season 3, Ep. 9 - Car Smells, Car History, Cars in The Hood
DO YOU SMELL THAT? DO. YOU. SMELL THAT?? That, my friends, is the odour of victory. Just as the winners write the history books, so do they hang little pine trees (or scented rappers' faces) around the rearview mirrors of the cars made by the losers. Because those losers of wars build some amazing cars. And those cars start to, you know, take on a bit of their own distinctive musk. Nothing pungent, but definitely evocative.
Join Nick and Sam as they guide you by the nose around the crumbling foam and gently heated plastics of yesteryear's...
Season 3, Ep. 8 Sex in cars and Dead Batteries
It's been a while since something like this has happened - I swear! Normally, we just go for a quickie to fill in the need and make a big effort later on when bloody work isn't so busy, and we all know what that's like, right?
Talking about podcasting here. Trying the clever little switcharoo to cover up for a particularly dry dry-spell, and we are certainly not above including the word "sex" in the episode title to vacuum in a little more interest.
But do we actually talk about sex in cars? Do we...
Season 3, Ep. 7 - V12s Around The World
Oh boy! Is that a brand new V12 supercar?? No, actually, that one is a render trawling for people who respond to the words "manual twelve cylinder" with drool and seven-figure deposit cheques. Which would be your old pals, Nick and Sam. If we used cheques. Which is the only restriction.
How about THAT? Is that a real V12 supercar? Yes. Yes, and the boys are back after a long, sad winter hiatus to talk about design, purity, Chris Bangle, the Nilu 27, the new Testarossa and The Burger Incident.

Season 3, Ep. 6 - Let's Go Shopping!
It's shopping time! Come, lose a finger squeezing under the slowly ascending roller door with Nick and Sam as they charge into car marketplaces of the world. We get a little too intimate comparing the Carsales app to Tindr, but we aren't far off the mark. Swipe. Low ball. Bid. It's all pretty similar, right? We reminisce about the ones that got away, and the ones where we almost risked it all. And yes, this is mostly Marketplace and Gumtree, but you have to kiss a few frogs to get into a V12 Alpina with the pin stripes. No...
Season 3, Ep. 5 - Most Beautiful Car Ever Made
Most beautiful car ever made? One question, two answers. The first won't surprise you, the second will make you thump your steering wheel rage. To give themselves something to do in the lazy hiatus (which seems to be a bit of a theme this year), Nick and Sam pondered what the most beautiful car ever made was according to a) everyone, and b) no one but ourselves. What drab piece of automotive history would we defend as being a secret stunner?
Listen in to find out!

Season 3, Ep. 4 - Old Names, New Cars, Newer Drivers and the Motorsport Festival 2025
Okay. Right, um. So, yep, seatbelt, keys in the ignition - don't turn them yet! No, so. Okay, foot on brake. Middle one. Wait, left one, I guess. NOW turn the keys, okay, STOP turning them! Engine is on! Now, uhm, right. Put it in 'D', handbrake off, indicate, check mirrors, okay wait, adjust your mirrors. Bugger. Forgot about that one. Okay, still indicating, now release brake and move off slowl-SLOWly, now steer. STEER. HOW?? Hand over under hand ten and two unless you're moving the wheel in which case ...
Nick and Sam have been pondering the...
Season 3, Ep. 3 - All Japan Day 2025! Number plates, and the Ferrari Enzo
There were Hondas, there were Toyotas, there were Nissans, there were probably Subarus and Isuzus and Daihatsus and even the odd Mazda. There were high ones, low ones, ones that went even lower than that, and then a couple which were deffo lowered, but not on purpose, because these things tend to be pretty homemade. But the one thing that was definitely there was love. And a yakitori stand that took a while to serve you, but was worth the wait.
All Japan Day 2025 was an absolute all-timer, and your favourite car-based podcasters, Nick and Sam, were...
Season 3, Ep. 2 - Honda, Trucks and Pre-All Japan Day
Friends! Drivers! Patient Passengers! Lend us your ears. And your favourite memories of the Honda Motor Corporation. Nothing says confidence in a car company like sending their new F1 drivers off to work in a 30-year-old NSX (hilariously covered in Season 1, Ep. 7) just after deciding not to go dancing with Nissan.
But we digress. Which we also do a lot of in this latest episode. Get your fill (premium, of course) on truck talk and exactly what we think of the Toyota Tundra (not premium, dudes. Definitely not premium).
Listen in, and come on...
Season THREE: The keys were in the visor. It really happened.
They said we'd never make it. They said we'd never get this far. They ... said that we smell like butts.
They were wrong. Mostly. Two out of three. Because Nick and Sam (and their butts) are BACK. Yes, we are doing the year per season thing, and dumping the clutch with a tyre-smoking big bumper episode - now with extra puns! Come with us as we relive Culture Day #3 and how we almost almost drove a million-dollar sports car. Almost.
Plus, we really did drive the new benchmark in electric cars: the Porsche Macan.
<...Season 2, Ep. 14 - Cops! Non-car car stuff! Depreciation Appreciation!
Lo, let the confetti cannons of depreciation thunder across the bonnets of departing four-door European sedans as they glide from the dealership floor. May their astronomical prices melt through their first-owner's fingers like so much truffled butter. And! Let us scroungers of the streets, gather up those princely conveyances, swathed in the leather of only the most endangered creatures, powered by engines which can loosen hip-replacements from 30 yards, for only marginally more coin than a top-spec Camry.
Depreciation Appreciation Month has arrived! On this episode, Nick and Sam scroll through the carsales app, making increasingly impressed grunts...
Season 2, Ep. 13 - Adelaide Rally, The Terrible Truth of the Purosangue, LFA
Legions of JGFADs! Welcome to a sizzling episode not to be missed. Because, even though we promised no more talk of the controversial Ferrari CX-30 sorry Purosangue, Nick has finally solved the puzzle. And it's not some tedious one-eyed whinging about how sports car makers shouldn't build SUVs - what is this? Porsche Cayenne, Season 1? The one where everyone who doesn't want a 911 suddenly has opinions about a frankly floundering German marque they never would have had the taste or bravery to buy anyway?
No. We have a real reason. Tremble, Ferrari. Tremble!
Plus, adventures...
Season 2, Ep. 12 - Puros, Servos, Cheapo Enzos
Come in. Sit down. Not there. That chair is broken. So's that one. If fact, why not stand? Yes, let's all stand and admire this very, very cheap Ferrari and wonder how we even got here. From normal, mortgage-having, bill-paying, respect-mostly-commanding human beings, into nearly destitute, futon-sleeping, tea bag-reusing Ferrari owners. That's right. Ferrari owners. The prancing horse, the great noise, the furrowed brow, everything.
Well, mostly. Almost. We're close. And in this episode, find out exactly how close we are to figuring out the final step in the journey from bedroom poster to in-the-metal reality.
<...Season 2, Ep. 11 - Chinese cars! Electric cars! Uh-oh, Ferrari, and the Mini!
Welcome to ... The Unintentionally Long Update Hiatus Apology Podcast Write-Up! This TULUHAPWU has it ALL: excuses (SO busy lately!), diverting stories which fail not to be more excuses (Sam went to China! Not for the pod so ...),thinly veiled blame (Nick apparently had a thing), obvious lies about future updates (because we'll be podding twice a week from now on!), poorly judged passive aggressive sulking (but really, thanks for all the messages of support on Insta, we totally read them all), and a last minute realisation that the people who actually read this far are doing it out of...
Season 2, Ep. 10 - Culture Day!
On this luxurious episode, Nick and Sam wonder what the poor are doing. That is: they would wonder what the poor are doing if there were any to be found in our very special Car of The Week. Your favourite Auto Maniacs carve out some very special time to push their fingers through lambs wool so soft and thick, it immediately makes them forget about the most eyeball-peeling acceleration either has ever felt. We tour the unsuspecting car lots of the upper crust, spreading crumbs, talking dough, and getting a rise out the long-suffering guardians of Cars You're Not...
Season 2, Ep. 9 - Newy's Newie, a Krazy Kombi, and the BMW 2002
Settle in, listeners. This is the episode about the Little Cars That Could. Sort of like this podcast, really. Nick and Sam bring you glad, glad tidings of a new miracle in this world: a brand new, V10-engined boom stick. We count the ways why the vivacious V10 brings happiness to the world.
Reason number one: the noise. Oh, that juicy, juicy noise.
Reason number two: you don’t own one and never have to wonder about the compromises made between engineering delight and service cost.
Reason number three: hey, just listen to...
Season 2, Ep. 8 - Datto, Buggo and The Boom Gate
It finally happened. The driving event that has haunted the imaginations and even dreams of every car enthusiast and beyond: a boom gate gave someone the ol' chop-chop. Nick and Sam can't wait to bring you this absolutely true story. Also, there's a new Bugatti out, it's got a V16 engine, might be the new standard for The Last Age of Combustion Engines blah blah blah etc. But you have GOT to hear about this goddamn boom gate. And if that weren't enough dreams coming true: if you've ever heard of Singer Porsche (and if you listen to this...
Season 2, Ep. 7 - Who's Calling? Cyclists? Type R? Which Type R?
It's time to zone out, turn off your brain, and receive a call from your loved ones while piloting a two-tonne kill-machine through a blank space in your memory that you'll never get back. That's right: it's another whacky mind massage from the Just Going For A Drive lads! We take you back through history with the power and the passion of phones in cars, reminisce about those big, Big, BIG numbers we've seen roll over (mostly), and break the exclusive story that ... cyclists are actually real people. Don't believe us? (And the research tells us you probably don't...
Season 2, Ep. 6 - No, Red Light, I expect you to die, Odometers that count, and Doors and Vents
On this BUMPER episode (yes, we're that good), Nick and Sam return with a vengeance to tell the Truth About Red Lights like it is and probably isn't. We've certainly had the chance to think about it, stuck at the same crossing, for no reason, for a mathematically impossible number of times. You'll hear all the latest about The New Porsches, The New Bugatti and most thrillingly the time our odometers rolled over a significantly high number! But, speaking of significantly high: our feature car will get you there. The one and only Aventador. You know it. We love...
Season 2, Ep. 5 - Terrible Driving Moves, Adelaide Motorsport Festival and Learning to Drive
Just like school parents from side-streets at 3:28pm, the episodes are coming at you thick and fast, and stupid! Nick and Sam leap back onto the recording couch (it's more of a chaise, but we don't want to sound pretentious Siri edit that last bit out I don't want to sound pretentious) for another hot hour dissecting 2024's latest terrible driving move. We've even given it a name that potentially opens up litigation! Listen in to find out! We shift gears (amazing! Siri! Find out whether anyone has used that joke before) to tell tales of our care-free, knowledge-free...
Season 2, Ep. 4 - BMW M4 Test drive! Dating advice! Sticky car interiors!
Once again, Nick has talked his way behind the wheel of a premium automobile, and is ready to share his impressions, his tips, and his definite plans to probably maybe start to consider possibly finding out if he might be keen to look into purchase options in the future. Just Going For A Drive is BACK with a beaver-teeth-to-quad-pipe review of the mighty, terrifying BMW M4. Six twin-turbo-charged cylinders of podcast-fuelled fury!
Plus, we continue our series of car-based romance advice*, and drop in what's been going on in the world of roads, driving, and how...
Season 2, Ep. 3 - All Japan Day - Live Podcast!
Coming at you from beautiful Downtown Glenelg, Sam and Nick drop their hot takes on the very best that Adelaide's booming car scene has to offer. We feature all the All Japan Day car meet has to offer and more, recorded from the Just Going For A Drive Mobile itself: Sam's Nissan! Meet our surprise special guests, who were surprised to have a microphone jammed in their face from a Good+ quality JDM special.
Plus, we pass on the finest dating advice available from two mid-tier specimens like ourselves to anyone who thinks cars make a...
Season 2, Ep. 2 - Top Speed? No, Officer. Driving Music, and yes, the Camry
Top speed talk. Real talk. Don't speed, people. Don't top speed, bottom speed, side speed. Anything. Just settle into the slow lane and listen to Nick and Sam dance carefully around claiming any sort glamour around whether going fast is really the point of driving. Plus, we get into the strangely slow death of music in cars. Where are the pumping subs? The teenagers with definite hearing problems? The actual fans of comedy hip-hop? Let us ask you this: do you keep singing to your favourite Celine Dion song when you're stopped at the lights? Or do you chicken...
Season 2! Holiday Cars, Holiday Drivers, the Mechanics We Love, and the first American car
WELCOME to Season 2 of your favourite podcast. The driving one you can listen to while driving and thinking about driving. In this blockbusting, bumper-to-bumper episode, we boggle our minds at the thrills, spills and dills that are Australia's holiday season streets. We eulogise the dead (yes: DEAD) icon of holiday motoring: the humble, practical station wagon. Sam pays tribute to the multi-generational family mechanic of more than 35 years, and Nick overcomes his prejudice against all American cars with perhaps the first fitting entry into the automotive Hall of Fame (which isn't a thing, but we've got to start somewhere).<...
Episode 13.5 - BONUS! The Rally! The 500! A cop! Wait, what?
Worry not, dear Just Drivers! We are back. Sam and Nick stagger from the post-Xmas pit stop to give the latest on car races, proper meet manners, and whether we just might do a Xmas episode. We warm up the vocal chords and moan about petrol prices.
Set a new lap record on our latest bonus episode. And tell us: do you have a car tat?

Episode 13 - Getting Tyred, Fueling Up, and Supracalifragilisticexpialidocious
Burning rubber! Slowly. And unevenly. Damn. How are wheel-alignments where our lives are at now? Sam and Nick tread carefully through the sticky world of tyres, and teach you how to change a flat, as well as how to avoid the embarrassing tutting of the Mobile Mechanic who has to come and torque off that last nut. Come and find out what the hell we're talking about, and decide whether you are really okay with filling up from both sides of the car.
Our feature car this week is an eternal classic. Is it the true...
Episode 12 - Special Feature: Porsche 911 + Investment Advice with Nick and Sam
First released in 1963, almost immediately re-named because of French people, and mostly driven by the elderly, it's ... a very special episode of Just Going For A Drive. Sam and Nick straighten their cloth caps, comb their beards, and record the starting mileage in a small, leather-bound book using a Porsche-branded golf pencil, before clattering off into the hills and autobahns in possibly the world's gold standard of sports cars. We talk about the 911's weird lay out, its (actually quite accurate) image as a middle-of-life conveyance, and dream of the Singer Motor Company configurator. No, that's not the brand...
Episode 11 - Frowning in a Ferrari, British Design is Bonkers, and the Best Drive Ever
Everyone wants one, but have you ever seen someone actually smiling in a Ferrari? Have you? Like Batman and Bruce Wayne, a grin and a Fezza are never seen together. On this episode we ask (and answer) the big question: does owning a Ferrari make you unhappy and how can I get one as soon as possible so that I can also feel this feeling? (We told you it was a big question.) Then, to lighten things up, we head north from Italy to the sunny British Isles to ponder why the country where grey cardigans come from produces...
Episode 10 - Late Indicators, Colours, and the Family People Mover
TEN! Ten. Ten episodes. Can you believe it? We can. We can believe it because we're there. And we celebrate this milestone (another driving term!) with a bumper episode dedicated to our beautiful listeners who write in. Nick and Sam answer Hannah's question "Why the hell are you zooming across all of those lanes? And why don't you know about indicators?". We shout-out to long-time supporter, Steph the graphic designer, and try to make her proud (or at least slightly amused) as we tackle the complete spectrum of colour on cars. Yes, the complete spectrum. That's about 5 or 6 different...
Episode 9 - The Mighty Sherpa, the Mightier Kia EV6 and the RRRRex
If you heard "Mighty Subaru" and thought "Mighty Boy", then this is the podcast for you. Somehow we forgot all about the world's tiniest ute, and went for the world's tiniest van. The incredible Subaru Sherpa stars in our Stories of Cars segment as a young Nick learns about rally driving, again forgetting about the most obvious Subaru rally machine, the WRX, until later in the episode. Rounding out your full-fat selection is the actually incredible Kia EV6 GT, the supercar destroying family mini-SUV thing which will be answering the age-old playground question: "What if, like, we all, you...
Episode 8.5 - BONUS! Over the Horizons, and Road Trippin'
Where have we been?!? Where haven't we been. Nick and Sam pull over for a quick chat after an extended break. We farewell the much loved Horizon Saturdays car meet at the Brickworks Market, and bring you the latest trends in Moron Behaviour on Interstate Roads. You wouldn't believe what's out there. Or maybe you would. These people, I tell ya, one time-- wait. Just press play.
In these mini-episodes, we bring you a quick burst of car-talk to tide you over while the main episode sits in the paint-shop, awaiting the final touches.

Episode 8 - European Roads, Dad Driving or Bad Driving, and the Veyron
"Monsieur. Just put on your indicator and go." This eternally decent advice both informs and terrifies as Nick and Sam rush bravely screaming into Parisian traffic, bunny-hopping around centuries-old landmarks, and discovering what real mountains have to teach about real driving. If you've ever been involved in backing a trailer, either on the supply or demand side, you'll recognise the cross-handed reverse-but-in-the-mirror style of driving with which our own fathers make magic, somehow squeezing through impossible gaps.
But really, this episode's story is our feature car. The feature car on every piece of driving media since its...
Episode 7 - How to Get a Test Drive, How to Hitchhike and Wow. The NSX.
Nick and Sam hit the road ... in someone else's brand new car! How DO you drive the finest metal around without actually having to hand over your life savings? Our handsome young reporter at large, Nick, hit the dealerships to discover the ins, outs and definitely-nots of booking a test drive. The boys share chilling tales of hitches hiked, hiking hitchers and everything in between.
And our feature car is one of the true greats: the Honda NSX. Did you know that Ayrton Senna was involved in its development? We did. Everyone does. That's why we talk...
Episode 6 - Convoooy, The Mighty Alfasud, and We'll see, 4C
Just follow me, but make sure you keep up. You can definitely make that orange. Come ON! Just make sure you don't let anyone cut in front when you join Nick and Sam as we analyse another listener suggestion: the convoy (thanks, Dan!). You've both got to get there, but only one person knows where it is? Sounds like the Just Going For A Drive boys are hitting record on another smashing episode. And speaking of smashing: the Alfa Romeo Alfasud rattles through with stories of rust and romance and maybe getting road raged in the Northern Suburbs. We...
Episode 5 - The Rules of Parking, Biiig Trucks, and the Porsche Cayman
We're back! After the kind of disaster that only happens if you attempt to record a podcast in an open-top Captiva, Nick and Sam return in triumphant form (as always). On this episode we answer the urgent email from long-time listener, Graham, demanding the last word on The Rules of Car Parking. Who gets the park? What is the right way to park? And how do you avoid the shame of The Wrong Way To Park?
Even though you want to escape them, you can't. Big Ol' Trucks are next on the menu, and we explain exactly...
Episode 4 - Noon and Midnight, Gangster Cars, Ferrari Testarossa
How do they steer? No, really: HOW? They have no leverage! Nick and Sam dissect what should be the simplest thing in driving: holding the steering wheel. We move carefully and respectfully onto what makes a true Gangster Car. Is it machine guns? The sound of muffled pleading from the boot? We lay down the definitive factors that make a car truly a Made Car.
And, lastly, we pay tribute to the first, best, and only supercar: the Ferrari Testarossa.
Listen in. Nod along. Let us know what you think!

Episode 3 - Holiday driving, The Rock Star Park, Toyota Corolla
Sunday driver! [shakes fist] Calm down, and we'll talk about the people who you find careening down the b-roads of your local tourist spot. We explain the secrets of how to secure that glorious park out the front every time, and, we don't like to reveal too much in these write-ups, but we do give our measured and objective thoughts on the magnificent Toyota Corolla, Chariot of the Gods (Hey! I had one of those! Me too!)
And stay tuned for the special BONUS MATERIAL!

Episode 2 - Mobile Phones, Sam's First Car, Holden Captiva
What's that guy doing? Why is she swerving into that parked car? What's so interesting in his lap? Ahhhhh ... they're on the phone. You know who we mean, and we mean pretty much everyone. Join Nick and Sam as we shake our heads and tut at the social media addicts with which we share our roads (Like and subscribe! Tell your friends!)
We find out exactly why the law had to change because of Sam's first car. (True story. It is definitely Sam's fault.) We also get far too personal with the Holden Captiva.

Episode 1 - The Overtaking Lane, Nick's First Car, and the Urus
We all know them. Those people who cruise along in the overtaking lane, 4 ks under the speed limit, oblivious to everything from their own mirrors to the outside world. Join Nick and Sam and as they get to the bottom of exactly why they exist, what their deal is, and how you can bloody get around them.
We also relive the horrors and delights of Nick's first car, and explore the Lamborghini Urus, answering the age-old question: what the hell are these things? And, why are there here? Okay: two age-old questions. Are they just re-baged Hyundai...
