The Weekly Pint
I have a couple of different podcasts, and they all feed here into this ONE RSS feed... if that's easier for you!
Be Gnarly, Be Better!
The title might have NOTHING to do with what we ended up talking about, but that doesnât mean that we donât have a lot to talk about on this weekâs episode. Quite the opposite, actually. I start things off (after the regular technical difficulties) with âThe Schnappeningâ that was a little sweet⌠not peaches⌠but candy-like and delicious. From there we talked about everything from whatâs happening at Bad Tom Smith in Madisonville to the current status of âIntoxicating Hempâ here in Ohio. The upcoming Halloween celebration wraps things up for another action packed week!
Hereâs what I...
Why The Neverending Chaos?!?
This one starts out rough â with a pour of something horrid called âYukon Jack Snakebiteâ. It might even be the worst thing that Iâve ever tried on this show, which is saying A LOT. I followed it up with a big glass of Fabled Brew Worksâ Last Call of Cthulu, which was quite the improvement!
We talk about Verge Brewingâs announcement that they are no longer working on a taproom in Delhi, and have canceled their plans to open their doors after an extremely long and winding road to do so.
I talk about Cincy...
A Sweaty Gnome Can Only Be Fixed By One Thing... Let's Drink!
Itâs always a possibility, but there are a couple of days every year where I pretty much know that this show is going to be late â and when we come out of a long weekend of camping, itâs a pretty good possibility that weâre going to be running a little late. We fire things up, drink a couple beers (and maybe even let them battle it out). Itâs a whirlwind of a fun show!
https://youtube.com/live/_3skJn6v5kEThe Big-Osa's... What do we think is going on?
Fueled by a conversation I had the other day with a buddy in a taproom, along with some recent online discussions about a building that is for sale, I thought it was a great week to explore whatâs going on with the supposed âBig-Osaâsâ as Iâve dubbed the LaRosaâs and Big Ash collaborative space. They announced that theyâd be handing over their kitchen to the restaurant⌠but what does it REALLY mean for the future?
I have theories. Letâs open a beer and talk about it.
https://youtube.com/live/bvz239tCERMListermann Is Closed, Of Course I Have Thoughts, It's A Not So Happy Hour.
Itâs never an easy thing when a local taproom closes, and itâs even worse when itâs a local institution like Listermann Brewing Company. I have a ton of thoughts that Iâve been working my way through â and what better way to work through them than live on a show with you!
Grab a drink, and letâs see what happens.
The Weekly Pint is a live show, and is best listened to live â tune in every Monday night around 9:30!
If you like this show, or any of the stuff that I create...
Label Me Thirsty, We've Got Some Stuff To Talk About!
I love collecting the latest label approvals for our local breweries, and it always sparks a few conversations around the possible products that we might see in the near future. If that doesnât give you a big hint about where this weekâs episode will be headed, Iâm not sure what will.
I go back to a taste of Twisted Tea flavored whiskey⌠which still isnât very good, and I crack open a can of Urban Artifactâs âHoliday Punchâ which was delicious and we dive into the topic⌠which because of its visual nature is probably...
It's A Lager Type Of Summer!
When the weather heats up, I get the urge to drink a bunch of lagers⌠so thatâs what weâre going to do on tonightâs show. I crack open four different (non-local) lager beers to see if they taste even better when itâs hot outside. We also talk about the inspiration, a new 8.4 oz can thatâs coming from the folks at Sierra Nevada⌠and why an 8.4 ounce serving size is either perfect, or⌠weird?
Itâs not a show⌠but itâs a ton of fun.
Broken Bones And People Might Lose Their Jobs?
Itâs been a real whirlwind of a week. The news that Ohio Eagle was closing itâs doors, or being sold is still super fresh (and full of unknowns⌠are people losing their jobs?). To top that off, my oldest kiddo broke her arm which was just a ton of fun to deal with.
It all means that a drink is in order!
I started the show off by giving a Glazed Doughnut vodka a taste (it was terrible) and followed it up with a can of a Malort Spirtz (that was really strange) and th...
Well, That's How Every Weekend Should Go I Think!
As we head out of Fatherâs Day weekend, Iâm left feeling like it was just a great weekend. Good beers, great food, you know the drill. It all has me in a fantastic mood.
We kick off this weekâs happy hour by diving into a quick taste of Luxardo Maraschino, which Iâm pretty certain Iâve never actually just tried by itself. As it turns out, this stuff is delicious. It wonât be the last time it makes an appearance on Monday nights, I can promise you that!
I then drink a trio...
I Keep Telling You That It Can't Be Late If It Isn't A Show.
Itâs been a busy weekend in my house. Weâre coming off of a big family camping trip, which is always really exciting when you have to then get your butt home and try to do a live podcast. We were doomed from the beginning⌠this show was going to be late.
Luckily for all of us, we have always said that since this ISNâT a show â thereâs no way itâs possible to actually be late.
We drink a bottle of Founderâs Blushing Monk (huge thanks to Half Ass Beer Review) and wrap...
It's Cinco De Mayo, And I'm Knee Deep In Awards
This week on the weekly pint I celebrate Cinco De Mayo with some very terrible canned cocktails that claim to be margaritas - they aren't.
Do Gnomes Float
This week, on the weekly pint - we drink Orahovac, Sparkling Sake, and a Pumpkin Coffee Fruit Tart from Urban Artifact.
Where's The Chaos?
This week's episode of the weekly pint features some Goose Island beer, a weird fruited scotch something and an amaro. It was fun.
DIY Gnome Needs A Drink!
This episode of The Weekly Pint comes in the middle of a little bit of extra chaos in my life... a perfect night for a drink!
You're Not My Daddy... You're Just A Drink!
Sometimes, the drinks that I decide to crack open on this show are strange. Sometimes, they confuse me, sometimes they're better than I think they're going to be. I'll leave it up to you to decide where "Too Turnt Daddy" hard tea lands in the middle of all of that. We drink, we talk about distribution laws, the dangers of coffee... it's a wild ride from start to finish! I couldn't love sharing this weekly happy hour with all of you every week, and I can't thank you enough for spending your Monday nights with me!
Humble, But Sad.
This week's episode has some sad parts (Humble Monk's Closing) and some surprisingly fun parts (Becherovka, anyone?). It's The Weekly Pint!
How'd I Manage To Miss This For So Long?
On this week's episode we drink some dandelion wine... talk about a spot that I can't believe I haven't been to - and rant about change.
Sometimes, Love Hurts.
This episode of The Weekly Pint involves Soji, sad news, and some label approvals - it's a whirlwind of emotions!
This Battle Might Be Useless... But It's Gonna Happen Anyways
In this episode of The Weekly Pint, we dive headfirst into the excitement of Oktoberfest season, my absolute favorite time of the year. I share my enthusiasm for Oktoberfest beers and the extensive collection I've amassed, ready for the ultimate showdown. This year, I've introduced a seeding process to the competition, aiming to make it more organized and fair. We also experience some technical difficulties, a common occurrence in our live podcast format, but we roll with the punches and keep the conversation flowing. We discuss the intricacies of the Oktoberfest Quest, where I pit every packaged Oktoberfest beer in...
O' Zapft Is!
Oh boy, do I have a lot to unpack from our latest episode of The Weekly Pint. If you tuned in, you know it was a rollercoaster of emotions, technical hiccups, and, of course, some fantastic beer tasting. For those who missed it, let me give you a rundown of what went down. A Late Start and Dad Life Woes First off, I want to apologize for the late start. Life as a dad can be unpredictable, and last night was one of those nights where everything seemed to go wrong. My kids were on a mission to drive me...
Walnuts In My Face!
This episode of The Weekly Pint features Darna's Orahovac, a tasty walnut liqueur that I kind of fell in love with.
The Good, The Bad, The Exit Strategy
I've been sitting in the middle of a lot of news stories, a lot of conversations, and a lot of deep thoughts about what success and failure actually mean. What does it mean for the breweries that we love? Where does what we want and what they want have crossover? What does any of that matter when it's "just beer" at the end of the day?
Booze Is Back, Baby!
This week's episode features another "crowd-sourced cocktail" which turned into a Banana-rita, which was a lot better than it should be.
Boilermaker?
We drink a few different "Boilermakers" on this week's episode of the Weekly Pint.
Why Would People Do This For Fun?
It's been a crazy week! I teamed up with a group of our local podcast community that we lovingly call the "Cincy Pod Squad" to knock out the Flying Pig this year - and it was insane to say the least. On top of that, HighGrain Brewing Company opened their new location in Springfield Twp - and I have some fun drinks calling my name from the fridge. It's going to be a good one!
Into The Belly Of The Beast
This week on The Weekly Pint, we recapped a trip to Columbus, reviewing highlights and lowlights of various stops. The episode featured discussions on recent beer label approvals, with a standout being Urban Artifact's Papaya Passionfruit Green Tea Fruit Tart. Airing live across multiple platforms, The Weekly Pint serves as a virtual happy hour, discussing beer news and more. Support for The Gnarly Gnome is appreciated via their website.
Totality
In this week's episode, the host shares their awe-inspiring eclipse experience and an amusing mishap with a can of Gaffel Kolsch. They express sincere appreciation for the audience's continued support, encourage contributions at TheGnarlyGnome.com/support, and invite listeners to share the show, highlighting the power of word-of-mouth.
We're All April Fools, And It's So Much Fun!
This week on the podcast, while sipping Urban Artifact's Phrenology IPA, I discussed the playful April Fools' hijinks by local breweries. Upcoming events include a Columbus podcasters meet-up and Streetside's barrel-aged stout event. Supporters via Patreon will see new perks, and the revival of Cincy Beer Week is announced. Thanks for the ongoing support, and Stay Gnarly!
Its One Of Those Days
The world has been... surprise... chaotic. The entire show that I had planned for tonight's live episode of The Weekly Pint has to be scrapped for a quick little episode instead. Not to be let down, though... I'll run through a couple of previews of some stuff coming down the road - because, well... why not?
Can't We Just Get A Normal Week?
On this week's episode of The Weekly Pint, we talk about RShea brewing company - and while I fully understand that they AREN'T a Cincinnati Brewery, their recent "Town Hall Meeting" and subsequent GoFundMe is undoubtedly something that we should be paying attention to. Craft beer is more complicated now than ever, making for some relevant conversations. It seems that I have spent more time lately struggling to stay caught up on all the stuff that needs to be done - and that makes this show more important to me than ever. It gives me a chance to recoup a...
As One Quest Ends, We Drink!
Just because Oktoberfest is winding down, doesn't mean that we aren't going to drink some Oktoberfest beer!
It's Officially Fall, and I THINK That I'm Ready.
We've got a few Cincinnati news stories to cover this week, but Oktoberfest quickly dominates the conversation again. We're MAYBE a week away from this year's Oktoberfest Quest finals, which means I'm in crunch mode, both with drinking, and planning. We crack open way too many beers, and live in the chaos from the very minute I hit record. Just as expected, right?
There's A Hole In My Ceiling And My Car Won't Start
The start of a new country song? No... Just sort of how my week has been going already. Nothing that a cold beer and a good conversation won't fix!
How Much Louder Do We Need To Shout About Ohio Beer
We've all been shouting from the rooftops for years - Ohio (and especially Cincinnati) is making some of the best beer in the country. This year's Great American Beer Festival is a great showcase of that!
It's Not Cursed, It's Way Simpler
Moeller Brew Barn announced today that they are closing their Monroe taproom - and the messages came flooding into my inbox all day, with folks telling me that they thought the location was "cursed". In this week's episode, I take a little dive in to explain why I think the brewery closed its doors - and guess what? It's way simpler than a "curse".
I'm Alive, And Yes, I'm Still Questing!
Things have been insane (I feel like I say that a lot) with family activities, work stuff and everyday chaos. However, that hasn't slowed me down from working my way through round one of this year's Oktoberfest Quest. We're almost ready to dive into the next round! Coming off a missed week, I'm ready to hang out and have a drink with you. That's kind of the point of this whole thing (if you're new). It's a happy hour. We hang out live every Monday evening around 9:30 to talk about what's been going on, and to have a drink together.
Oktoberfest, Pour Your Own Beer Bars, And Tipping Culture.
It's some of the big news around Cincinnati... Copper and Flame is closing its doors. It opens up a big conversation about "pour your own beer" bars and why some of us don't really like them. We touch on everything from interaction with other people, and tipping culture. Of course... that's not all the news from Cincy - both Braxton and Listermann have some big taproom changes happening, and we have to talk about that. All the while, you know there's a tasty beer in my glass - tonight, I'm sipping on Rhinegeist's Sabro Express, a collaboration with Deschutes. It's...
Country Style? Traditional Country Style?
I don't actually know what it means to be "country style" - especially when it comes to an Oktoberfest beer... but we drink one. I also let everyone on the live stream reply to my Mom's text messages, so that's pretty interesting. You really never know what you're going to get out of The Weekly Pint!
The Quest Continues!
Not only does Oktoberfest Quest keep rocking with a showdown this week, but there's some big news with a little bit of Gatlinburg's drinking culture possibly changing and AB Inbev unloading some more of their brands (which might be a good thing for the culture of those brands. If you like this show, or really anything that I do - know that you can always support by going to http://www.TheGnarlyGnome.com/support!
Yep, I'm Still On Vacation
I have a theory that you can always be "on vacation" if you let yourself... it's more of a state of mind than anything else. A quick weekend away reminded me of that this week. To celebrate this week's "vacation" I figured I'd crack open a couple of pickle beers and call it a night!
