How to Have Complete Joy

Is it possible to have “complete joy” in our lives? Yes, but only when we understand what complete joy looks like from God’s perspective and how he has made it possible for us to experience it.
John 15:9-17 NRSV[9] As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. [10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. [11] I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that you...When You're Doubting God Because of Pain

In the chronicles of Jesus' first advent are tucked two stories of angelic visits that have similar overtones but completely different results. Both stories are found in the first chapter of Luke, and both involve an angel named Gabriel delivering messages of miraculous occurrences to two separate people.
First, of the priest named Zechariah, Luke tells us (in Luke 1:5-20) that Gabriel broke the news to the aged priest that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would have a son in spite of being in their older years, and that they were to name him John. John's assignment...
Three Phases of the Spiritual Life: Construction, Deconstruction, and Reconstruction

The spiritual journey we're all on, whether we asked to be on this journey or not, is anything but simple. I see a life of faith unfolding in at least three movements.
SPIRITUAL LIFE PHASE 1: Construction
From the time we’re born, we’re constructing a life. And this construction uses materials that were around long before we were.Â
Family history
Community life
Media

Education
Friendships
Religion
Tradition
Most of the people who have been a part of your formation will want to stop...
Experiencing Continual Spiritual Awakening

Today’s episode is about how to experience a daily, continual spiritual awakening.
We sometimes use the term “spiritual awakening” to refer to historical moments in our culture in which a large number of people experienced Spirit-led revival and renewal. Or we use the phrase to describe a single moment of salvation, baptism, or rededication. But then it’s over.
But spiritual awakening can be more than a moment; it can be a lifestyle. And it can be more than a personal, individual experience with God in mystical terms. Spiritual awakening can be a process whereby...
Stop Trying to Fit In

In order to “fit in,” you usually have to become like the people you’re trying to fit in with. Everyone will have expectations and standards for you to meet, and if you strive to fit in, you’ll need to meet them. The process of trying to fit in always causes stress.
Belonging, on the other hand, is a different matter. You get to find the spaces and circles in life where you belong. That is, you get to decide who you are, celebrate who you are, and choose to do life with people who resp...
How God is Saving the World, According to Jesus

We live in a wonderful world! A wonderfully flawed, sometimes violent, totally unpredictable, and definitely unsafe world. It’s broken and beautiful. Whatever you might believe about Jesus, he was definitely bold about his claim that God’s desire is to save this broken world through him, God’s Son, Jesus.Â
But what does that mean?
Millions of Christians can quote John 3:16, but our finite human minds can’t even begin to comprehend the magnitude of God’s love for his creation, much less understand the ways in which he is saving, redeeming, and renewing the entire...
An Ancient Framework for Relating to the Rest of the World

One big question we all wrestle with is this: What does God expect from me?
I mean, if he created me and birthed me into this messed up, confusing planet where pain and suffering and division are the norm, how does he expect me to navigate life here? What does he require of me?
Over two thousand years ago, a prophet named Micah boiled the answer down to three values or actions.
I can navigate anything if I do so while living o...
Welcome to Walk Humble
