The GOP is facing a critical midterm, but the conservative coalition is a mess. Several factions are now vying for the future of the movement and seem to have irreconcilable differences. When the Trump administration was dominating with clear momentum, those differences were pushed to the side, but critical missteps by the administration and the simple fact that Trump will leave office in 2028 have brought those issues to the forefront. Hillsdale fellow Titus Techera joins me to discuss the way out of this disaster.

For decades, progressives have used the sexual revolution to erode all standards except that of consent. But in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations at Cornell University, the question of whether consent is a sufficient moral condition for sexual relationships has come to the forefront. Things are not looking great for Vivek Ramaswamy. Two polls released this week put Democrat Amy Acton ahead in the Ohio governor’s race. Marist has Acton leading 50% to 44% among registered voters, while a Suffolk poll has her ahead 50% to 41% among likely voters. The center-left academic Robert Putnam is well known for his research on social cohesion, but his research led to a discovery that he suppressed for years. When Putnam finally came forward with his data, he revealed that diversity has negative impact across almost all domains of social cohesion. People in diverse societies trust the government less, have fewer friends, participate less in civic organizations, and spend more time at home watching television. The Trump administration recently revealed it is drafting a proposal, championed by Vice President JD Vance, to change how the government distributes money already earmarked for child care. For decades, American hiring and admissions have been distorted by a legal and bureaucratic regime that promised equal treatment while repeatedly rewarding institutions for sorting people by race and sex. The Civil Rights Act itself does not exclude white men; Title VII protects employees from discrimination because of race and sex regardless of which race or sex they are. But affirmative action rules, consent decrees, diversity mandates, contracting preferences, and institutional risk management created powerful incentives to treat demographic categories differently. The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a devastating blow to conservatives, but almost as shocking was the response from parts of the left. On immigration we have seen the deportation of Hattians who lost their Temporary Protected Status, a $100,000 fee for H-1Bs, and a pause on immigrant visas. British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. Unfortunately,  Phillips is far from alone in this belief, which has created a real barrier to robust nationalism. When I first entered the public arena, the focus of my work was almost entirely on why the Right needed to take power seriously. Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the horrific crime of allegedly murdering her three children after sending her husband out to do errands. Even the defense in the case is not bothering to argue that Clancy is innocent, only that she may have been temporarily insane due to postpartum depression. Despite this admission, women online have raised a massive amount of money while creating a conspiracy theory that blames Clancy's husband.
