The center-left academic Robert Putnam is well known for his research on social cohesion, but his research led to a discovery that he suppressed for years. When Putnam finally came forward with his data, he revealed that diversity has negative impact across almost all domains of social cohesion. People in diverse societies trust the government less, have fewer friends, participate less in civic organizations, and spend more time at home watching television. For decades, American hiring and admissions have been distorted by a legal and bureaucratic regime that promised equal treatment while repeatedly rewarding institutions for sorting people by race and sex. The Civil Rights Act itself does not exclude white men; Title VII protects employees from discrimination because of race and sex regardless of which race or sex they are. But affirmative action rules, consent decrees, diversity mandates, contracting preferences, and institutional risk management created powerful incentives to treat demographic categories differently. The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a devastating blow to conservatives, but almost as shocking was the response from parts of the left. British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. When I first entered the public arena, the focus of my work was almost entirely on why the Right needed to take power seriously. Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the horrific crime of allegedly murdering her three children after sending her husband out to do errands. Even the defense in the case is not bothering to argue that Clancy is innocent, only that she may have been temporarily insane due to postpartum depression.
