The Harris organization polled over 2,000 American adults on behalf of The Brain Injury Association of America to determine their awareness of brain injury symptoms, causes, and key myths and facts as well as their personal experiences with brain injury.

Brain Injury Insider Episode 125: Brain Injury Awareness Month 2025
#125
03/07/2025

March is again designated as Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Led by the Brain Injury Association of America, this year’s campaign is focused on the individual.

Dated research reports every year, at least 2.8 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury, and over 5.3 million Americans are living with brain injury-related disabilities.

The CDC reports that every 9 seconds, someone in the United States will sustain a brain injury.

A concussion is a brain injury.

So, these statistics vastly underestimate the number of individuals who sustain brain injury each year and the number of...

Brain Injury Insider Episode 123: Can Concussions And Repetitive Head Trauma Lead To Neurodegenerative Disease?
#123
01/24/2025

New research from Tuft’s University suggests that concussions and repetitive head trauma may reactive dormant viruses in the brain triggering neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease.

The study examined the Herpes Simplex Virus found in the brains of a high proportion of elderly individuals.  The research found the dormant virus can be reactivated by repetitive head trauma mimicking the forces necessary to generate a concussion.  The brains were then re-examined and found to have markers of neurodegeneration.

#119
12/09/2024

Screening of patients in hospital emergency departments for concussions and other types of traumatic brain injury is challenging due to the many ways symptoms may manifest.

Repeated studies have shown that emergency departments often fail to properly diagnose concussions leading to the inability of individuals to receive timely or proper treatment.

And even when a concussion is diagnosed, there is often a failure to assess the patient for a risk of future consequences previously called the post-concussion syndrome and now known as persistent post concussive symptoms.

A new study emphasizes the need to...

Brain Injury Insider Episode 115: Long Term Disability Insurance Benefits for Brain Injury Survivors
#115
10/09/2024

Despite what long term disability insurance carriers may respond to claims made by brain injury survivors for long term disability benefits, not everyone gets better after sustaining a traumatic brain injury.

Recent long term medical studies have concluded that the cognitive, physical, and emotional consequences of a traumatic brain injury, including a concussion can result in long term impairments.

These studies establish contrary to past opinions, most symptoms of concussion are not resolved within 3 months post-injury.
