Golden Knights not on NHL opening night schedule
#1164
Last Tuesday at 2:54 AM

We thought the Golden Knights with freshly-minted VGK forward Mitch Marner, would be on the opening night schedule at the very least.  The late game is the Avalanche at the L.A. Kings instead on October 7th.  The Golden Knights have played on opening day a few times already.   The rest of the NHL schedule will be released this Wednesday.  We also discuss if the VGK defense can be seen as a weakness.  And, Jack Eichel's media avail at the Battle For Vegas was cut short Saturday, before any media member could ask a question about his contract extension.

Did Marner "check out" during playoffs in Toronto?
#1163
Last Monday at 1:46 PM

Maple Leafs players, ans, insiders and media again are pointing fingers at Mitch Marner after they bowed out of the playoffs this past season.  Austin Matthews said there were too many passengers on the ice during the Panthers series and Andy Strictland, of the Cam and Strict podcast, said sources told them that Marner might not have given it his all during playoffs because he knew he would land in Las Vegas.  Chris recaps the Battle For Vegas charity softball game.  And, we talk about the impact of George McPhee nine years after joining the organization.

Nic Hague compares Nashville's "fluke" season to VGK 2022
#1162
Last Friday at 1:54 PM

Former Golden Knight Nic Hague says his new team suffered the same fate last season as VGK did in 2022, before the Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup.  He called Nashville's last season a "fluke" but believes the Predators can bounce back just like VGK did after a disappointing 2022 season.  Hague said the team was "hungry" and VGK had something to prove during the 2022 off-season, after the Golden Knights missed the playoffs.  He said it's a powerful feeling to have that desire.  We discuss what Brett Howden's role might be with VGK this upcoming season.  And it's WTF day with fan c...

Report: Eichel's extension to be worth more than Marner's
#1161
07/10/2025

Eliotte Friedman reported Jack Eichel's new contract will be worth more than Mitch Marner's 8x$12 million deal.  Friedman said Eichel's deal could be around $12.5 million AAV. And the deal could be for term, possibly eight years. Eichel told the Hockey News he is excited to play with Marner.  He said he can relate with some of the things Marner is going through with his departure from Toronto.  We discuss when negotiations will begin for Pavel Dorofeyev"s contract extension. His contract expires at the end of next season.  And, we wonder if Kelly McCrimmon will kick the tires on Jare...

Cassidy speaks on whether Marner and Eichel will be linemates
#1160
07/09/2025

Bruce Cassidy, appearing on the Morning Take Podcast, said he is hoping Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel have chemistry.  He said it's too had to tell in July.  One of the biggest questions looming is whether the two superstars will be on the same line.  Cassidy said they will have an opportunity to play together sooner or later.  He also hinted that Marner might play some with other centers Tomas Hertl or William Karlsson.  As we await the NHL schedule, hopefully on July 16th, we feel Mitch Marner will bring TV ratings and perhaps more national television appearances for VGK...

What would VGK give up for Andersson?
#1159
07/08/2025

The Golden Knights are still in the hunt for Rasmus Andersson, the Calgary defenseman who is going into his final contract season.  VGK has been at the top of the list as Andersson has said he wants to play for Vegas.  There were harsh conversations after VGK lost to Edmonton according to Elliotte Friedman.  He said the players, coaches and front office were upset after losing to the rival Oilers.  And VGK signed depth pieces, Raphael Lavoie, Jonas Rondbjerg, and Cole Schwindt to one-year contracts.

Marner Monday: Marner will help team points production
#1158
07/06/2025

How will VGK replace 132 points from this past season?  It shouldn't be difficult with the addition of Mitch Marner.  Yes, some players had career seasons this past campaign, but with Marner and Jack Eichel in the lineup consistently, the stats should continue to improve.  Tony said it wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that Marner could have an 80+ assist season.  Plus, VGK will be putting more pucks on net this season than last with Cassidy's new offensive design.  There are reports Nic Hague turned down a trade to Calgary for Defenseman Rasmus Andersson because he didn't want to sign a long...

Report: Eichel negotiations on extension have begun
#1157
07/04/2025

What opening day lineup might look like
#1155
07/03/2025

Now that Mitch Marner is a member of the Golden Knights, does Kelly McCrimmon add more pieces around him?  Is VGK set at the wing positions with the addition of Marner?  What line will Marner start on? Does VGK need another offensive defenseman? Still some questions remain.  And by McCrimmon's body language, he doesn't seem overly happy that Akira Schmid is the backup goaltender.  If VGK invested in Marner long-term, they need to make sure every position is improved from last season.  We also talk about Kaeden Korczak's four-year extension and his increased role on this Golden Knights blueline.

Welcome to Las Vegas Mitch Marner
#1154
07/02/2025

Mitch Marner met the Las Vegas media for the first time.  He said he is excited for the opportunity to play for a winning team.  He said he talked to Ryan Reaves and Max Pacioretty about the franchise and what it is like living in Las Vegas.  Kelly McCrimmon said Marner is one of the top players in the game today and said he was VGK's number one target in free agency.  We also talk about Alex Pietrangelo's health concerns with hip injuries he is headed to surgeries and will miss the next season at the least.  Kelly McCrimmon said...

Hague traded; VGK closing in on Marner signing
#1152
06/30/2025

It's the 11th Hour as we head toward the start of the NHL Free Agency period on July 1.  VGK is closing in on signing Mitch Marner.  There could be a sign and trade as the Maple Leafs look to get something in return for Marner.  A report from Eliotte Friedman said that there could be tampering charges against VGK, so we are keeping an eye on that note.  Nic Hague was traded to Nashville late Sunday night in return for defenseman Jeremy Lauzon and center Colton Sissons. Hague was a RFA.  Lauzon and Sissons have one year remaining on their...

What will VGK's roster look like after this weekend?
#1151
06/27/2025

This should be a big weekend for VGK. Not that they will be active in the NHL Draft, but Free Agency begins officially next Tuesday and the Golden Knights need to add more pieces to their roster.  Of course, the big prize would be signing Mitch Marner, but VGK also has to sign some complimentary players.  One of the latest Golden Knight names to surface as a trade piece was Nic Roy.  We (take a wild) guess on VGK's Draft pick at #58.  The new CBA will officially be announced Friday morning.  And, it's WTF Day with fan comments.

According to reports, VGK is re-signing Reilly Smith and Brandon Saad.  Smith, the original "Misfit" apparently will sign a one-year contract worth $2 million.  The contract includes $1 million in salary and another million signing bonus.  He had a 40-point season between the Rangers and VGK last season.  He had 11 points in 21 games with VGK.  Saad signed for $1.5 million with VGK last season.  He had 14 points in 29 games with the Golden Knights.  There have not been any terms released as of press time. Is VGK trying to move Hertl by July 1?
#1148
06/25/2025

The Golden Knights might be trying to trade Tomas Hertl to clear cap space for a potential move to land free agent Mitch Marner. Free agency is just six days away and there was a lot of talk of Hertl to Carolina on Tuesday. It turns out that Hertl has a modified trade clause in which he can pick three teams he wants to get traded to effective July 1, the start of free agency. The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun said the Marner list is growing with VGK the most mentioned team where Marner will land.  The others are Dallas, LA, A...

#1147
06/24/2025

We look at some of the changes already in the Pacific Division during the offseason.  There have been six trades in the NHL so far this offseason and four have been in the division.  Teams like Seattle, L.A., Anaheim and San Jose have a ton of cap space, so they are just getting started to change their lineups.  The latest move came on Monday, as Anaheim traded Trevor Zegras to Philadelphia for Ryan Poehling and two draft picks.  We also talk about the three new head coaches in the division - Joel Quenneville in Anaheim, Lane Lambert will be b...

Marner Monday: Report says VGK in the top 3 for Mitch Marner
#1146
06/24/2025

Reports say VGK could be the frontrunner for Mitch Marner. But there has also been word that Marner could seek a two-year deal due to the rising cap, in the vicinity of $12-14 million. Reports say Marker will likely sign with VGK, LA or Dallas. Is Akira Schmid the #2 goalie heading into next season? Our Chris Gawlik hears that Schmid has the backup goalie position heading into the season all but secured.  Ilya Samsonov is said not to be coming back to VGK. We also tell you about VGK preseason schedule.

Adin Hill needs to be better
#1145
06/20/2025

Adin Hill was at the bottom of the NHL playoff rankings winning 5 of 11 games and allowing 33 goals.  His save percentage was .887 andhis goals against was 2.93.  His numbers were worse vs the Oilers.  We also wonder if VGK is in the mix to pickup veteran center Jonathan Toews through free agency.  Toews, 37, has been out of the game for a couple of seasons suffering from complications of COVID.  And, we have our WTF feature.

Did Oilers comply with LTIR rules with Evander Kane
#1144
06/19/2025

Were the Oilers in compliance with the handling of the LTIR salary cap with Evander Kane?  The NHL is investigating the team currently.  Kane returned for Game 2 in the first round versus the L.A. Kings after his doctors cleared him.  He had a multitude of injuries and surgeries starting in September of last year. It took Kane a while to recover from those injuries.  He was on the ice around the time of the 4 Nations. No team has ever been punished for LTIR usage due to the loopholes that exist under the current CBA.  We also have odds to wi...

The Florida Panthers are now among the NHL elite, repeating as Cup Champions. They defeated the Western Conference champs, Edmonton, 4 games to 2.  The Panthers have been to the Cup Final three straight years, losing to VGK in 2023.  But they captured the Cup the last two seasons.  Sam Bennett won the Conn Smythe with 15 goals and 22 points. Marner or Bust!
#1141
06/17/2025

Our Tony Cordasco called it a "seminal moment for VGK," saying the Golden Knights have to figure out a way to sign Mitch Marner during free agency. Both hosts believe it is important for VGK to add another superstar to its top six.  We have the latest from the Marner Mill.  We believe VGK has to do whatever it can to sign Marner. There are several reports circulating that say VGK would be the best fit.  If Marner goes to another Pacific Division team, it wouldn't bode well for the Golden Knights.  Jack Eichel was named to Team USA for...

Does VGK need award winners?
#1139
06/13/2025

We debate whether VGK needs more award winners.  It would show they have some of the top players in the game.  Jack Eichel is currently inching toward superstardom.  Hopefully he can break through in the season's ahead.  Award winners would mean VGK is one of the top and elite teams in the NHL.  We also recap the Stanley Cup Final Game 4 and preview Saturday's Game 5.  And, we have WTF comments.

#1135
06/10/2025

According to the Athletic's James Mirtle, the Golden Knights were willing to shed $10-million n cap space in a three-way deal at the trade deadline.  The money would have been in salaries for two of three players - Ivan Barbeshev, Tomas Hertl and William Karlsson.  The deal would have landed Mitch Marner in Las Vegas.  Mikko Rantanen would have been sent to Toronto and two VGK players would be headed to Carolina.  Marner eventually decided to deny the trade by using his no-trade clause.  We also find it hard to believe that VGK's Bruce Cassidy didn't even get a vote...
