Planet Ludwig
Planet Ludwig offers two pop culture shows: Steve Ludwig's Classic Pop Culture & The Beatles Hour With Steve Ludwig. Classic music, comedy, classic commercials, guest stars from all walks of pop culture join us!
SLY & the Family Stone TRIPLE PLAY
Three segments of music by the sometimes brilliant, sometimes tragic, always interesting, SLY STONE (and THE FAMILY STONE).
Our first segment is an album from 2011: SLY STONE: I'M BACK! FAMILY & FRIENDS (Cleopatra Records). It's an interesting mix of brand new versions of Sly's classics - some featuring rock giants collaborating with Sly:
Dance to the Music (featuring RAY MANZAREK of THE DOORS)Everyday People (featuring ANN WILSON of HEART)Family AffairStand! (featuring CARMINE APPICE &...

HARRY NILSSON POPEYE DEMOS plus BONUS tracks
Robert Altman's 1980 film, POPEYE, featuring the music of Grammy winner Harry Nilsson, starred Robin Williams & Shelley Duvall. Harry Nilsson's demos are wonderful; he wrote and sings them all. My personal fave among this superb collection of demos is Nilsson's duet demo with Shelley Duvall.
Included are previously unreleased tracks from the film score, by Thomas Pierson.
PLUS the original Popeye theme AND the original 1930 Popeye vocal track.
Enjoy!

PAUL McCARTNEY: 7 Versions of "Spies Like Us"
Paul McCartney wrote & performed the theme song for the 1985 John Landis-directed comedy, SPIES LIKE US.
For those keeping score, on the song Paul performs vocals (along with Linda & Eric Stewart of 10cc), plays bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, keyboards, percussion, & tambourine. Eddie Rayner added synyhesizers.
Within the promotion for the "Spies Like Us" single, Paul released seven versions.
Enjoy~

ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA XANADU 12 INCH SOUNDTRACK MIXES
RARE ~ Electric Light Orchestra's FOUR 12" Remixes of their songs found on the XANADU Soundtrack (but not found in the movie itself). Plus a B-side of ELO's "I'm Alive" Xanadu single, also not found on the Soundtrack album. Add to those five ELO songs, we also have TWO 12" versions of the ELO/Olivia Newton-John duet from XANADU, "Xanadu."
"The Fall" (12" version) - Starts at 0:00"I'm Alive" (12" Dance Mix version) - Starts at 5:37"Don't Walk Away" (12" version) - Starts at 11:14"All Over the World" (12" Mix version) - Starts at 18:10"Drum Dreams" (B-side of "I'm Alive") - Starts at 25:15"Xanadu (feat. Olivia...
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA: 4 "XANADU" RARE 12" SOUNDTRACK MIXES
Electric Light Orchestra & Olivia Newton-John (Livvie makes a guest appearance on this setlist) teamed up for the 1980 XANADU movie soundtrack. Olivia sang her songs, ELO sang theirs, & they even duetted on a track (or so).
However, the 12-INCH DISCO/EXTENDED MIXES presented within these 40 very cool minutes are very hard-to-find (dare I say, "rare"?).
In addition to the four ELO 12" mixes, I've also included the equally-rare ELO B-side to "I'm Alive," "Drum Dreams" (which really COOKS!), and we finish up with guest Livvie Newton-John joining Jeff Lynne & his c...
FLO & EDDIE & THE TURTLES LIVE at The Bottom Line, NYC '79-'94
Here's a 2-hour, 15-minute LIVE compilation of FLO & EDDIE ~ aka THE TURTLES ~ shows from the legendary, but unfortunately, now-defunct New York City nightclub, The Bottom Line, from the years 1979-1994. The compilation is comprised from two main sources: "The Turtles Featuring Flo & Eddie Captured Live" and "New York 'Times' Live at The Bottom Line featuring Flo & Eddie." The "New York 'Times'" performances were recorded, with microphones literally hanging from the ceiling of The Bottom Line. Thus, the audio is not always 100%, but certainly worth hearing because it's a tremendous example of Flo & Eddie's fun, chaotic insanity ever-present during their live...

Beatles Hour 83 (Laurie Kaye, guest) with Steve Ludwig [Audio edition]
On this episode (#83) of The Beatles Hour with Steve Ludwig, we are joined by the brilliant author/rock journalist, LAURIE KAYE.
She interviewed John Lennon & Yoko Ono on the afternoon that John was brutally taken from us later that evening. It's a surreal story of a somewhat surreal (& exciting) life in the music & radio scenes. We'll also hear of Laurie's interviews with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, & so much more. PLUS, we'll hear of the horrifying encounter Laurie had with the scum who, shortly after the encounter, shot John Lennon.
Her brilliant book is entitled, CONFESSIONS OF A...

Steve Ludwig's Classic Pop Culture #36 - Melanie & Callie Cosplay
A true flower child of the sixties (and today!), MELANIE joins us for music & talk with host Steve Ludwig. Ms. Safka shares so many stories about her appearances at Woodstock & the Isle of Wight concerts, opens up about deeply personal episodes in her life, as well as sharing brand new music with us. The interview was truly a moving experience...
CALLIE COSPLAY tells us about life as a cosplayer. It's mostly fun, but you may be surprised at the lengths Callie & other cosplayers must go to to perfect their craft.

Honeymooners TV Show ~ Every song in full from "$99,000 Answer"
We've taken the legendary Honeymooners TV Show episode, "$99,000 Answer," and let Ralph (Jackie Gleason) & Ed (Art Carney) introduce the songs from the episode, but we'll listen to the full-length versions of each song.
LOU REED - METAL MACHINE MUSIC (1975)
Arguably, this is LOU REED's weirdest album release. METAL MACHINE MUSIC was released in 1975, but was taken off the market three weeks later. Some critics said it cost Reed his reputation in the music business. There are no songs or structured composition on the album; instead it consists of modulated feedback & noise music guitar effects.
UGLY MUSIC Magazine write: "Get beyond those first few unnerving seconds, listen closely, and it can be interpreted in a multitude of ways."
Decide for yourself...

JOHN & YOKO TWO VIRGINS (16-min. Walls & Abridged version)
Here is a shortened ("Walls & Abridged") 16-minute version of John Lennon & Yoko Ono's avant-garde, experimental album from 1968, Unfinished Music No. 1 - TWO VIRGINS.
I've taken 16 minutes' worth of the 30-minute album to give the uninitiated listeners an idea of what can be expected if one chooses to listen to the full album.
I've also included the bonus track, written by Yoko, that was included on the TWO VIRGINS re-release from 1997, "Remember Love." It features only Yoko on vocals and John on acoustic guitar. One may identify bits from The Beatles songs, "Julia," "Sun King," & "Dear Prudence" fr...
