Artie and Hudson continue their journey through The Empty Return, this time with a wedding reception at Franklin Gardens.

Simon, the Saints lock, is marrying Olivia, Johan and Marlin’s daughter, and what should be a straightforward family celebration soon drifts into rugby territory.

Tim spots a couple of issues with the scrum-half, one of the players recognises him from an Army v Navy match, and before long the past has caught up with him again.

From the garden at Old Heale Manor, Artie an...

Tim and Petra look back at the years when their friendship became something much deeper.

From school trouble and letters between England and Sweden, to rugby, family chaos, speaking Swedish just to wind Phoebe up, and the moment Tim began finding his direction again.

Tim recalls leaving school behind, working on a farm, failing the Army entrance test and finally deciding to go back and prove to himself what he could do. Petra remembers the letters, the long conversations, their sixteenth birthday, and the...

Artie and Hudson continue their journey through The Empty Return, and this time the title itself starts to make rather more sense.

What could possibly go wrong with an empty truck?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

From Old Heale Manor, Artie explains the next stage of Tim and Petra’s story while Hudson begins to realise that their supposedly straightforward retirement is becoming anything but straightforward.

And, as Artie points out, they are only just getting started.

Artie and Hudson continue their journey through The Empty Return, as Tim and Petra’s supposedly quiet retirement begins to look rather less quiet by the minute.

What started as a new life in Sweden is becoming something quite different. There are lorries, long journeys, unexpected complications and, inevitably, Tim finding himself involved in things that sensible retired people might have left well alone.

From the comfort of Old Heale Manor, Artie and Hudson pick apart the next stage of the story in their usual understated fa...

Tim and Petra sit down together to explain one of the central ideas behind The Parallel Six: the birth bond.

For as long as either of them can remember, the other was already there in dreams, familiar before they ever properly met. When they finally did stand face to face, it did not feel like meeting a stranger. It felt like recognition.

In this quiet conversation, they talk about that connection, the certainty that there would never really be anyone else, and how they eventually came...

Artie and Hudson continue their journey through The Empty Return.

Tim and Petra have settled in Ellös, Sweden, and Tim has finally retired from the Army. In theory, life should now be quieter.

In practice, Tim was never going to be very good at doing nothing.

Before long he is driving big Volvos across Europe, discovering that retirement looks suspiciously like changing uniforms, and using his truly dreadful attempts at foreign languages to persuade people to speak English instead.

Artie and H...

Tim and Petra thought retirement in Sweden might finally mean a quieter life. They were wrong.

In this episode of The Artie & Hudson Show, the boys begin exploring The Empty Return by Tim Heale, starting with the first seemingly innocent threads that begin to pull Tim and Petra back towards something far more complicated.

A driving test, an unexpected opportunity, new work, new friends and a rugby club all seem harmless enough on their own. But, as Artie points out, trouble rarely announces itself properly at...

Noor Inayat Khan was one of the most remarkable secret agents of the Second World War.

A descendant of Indian royalty, a musician and children's author, Noor might have seemed an unlikely candidate for clandestine warfare. Yet she volunteered to serve Britain, joined the Special Operations Executive and was sent into occupied France as a wireless operator — one of the most dangerous jobs in SOE.

Operating under the codename **Madeleine**, Noor remained in Paris as the network around her collapsed and the Gestapo closed in. Captured an...

Join British Army veteran Tim Heale on a visit to Eden Camp Modern History Museum in North Yorkshire.

Built during the Second World War to hold prisoners of war, Eden Camp began with the arrival of Italian prisoners before later housing German POWs. Today, its original huts preserve the sights, sounds and stories of wartime Britain—from life on the Home Front to the experiences of those held inside the camp.

In this film, Tim explores the surviving camp, its history and the human stories behind a...

Odette Sansom’s story is one of extraordinary courage, endurance and survival.

In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I look at the remarkable true story of Odette Sansom, one of the most famous women to serve with Britain’s Special Operations Executive during the Second World War.

Sent into occupied France, Odette worked alongside Peter Churchill as part of the SOE network operating against Nazi Germany. Their work was dangerous enough, but betrayal eventually led to thei...

In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I look at R. J. Minney’s book *Carve Her Name with Pride* and the much-loved 1958 film starring Virginia McKenna.

I also explore the real story behind *The Life That I Have*—the moving poem written by SO...

Colditz Castle was intended to hold Allied officers who had repeatedly attempted to escape. Instead, it brought together some of the most determined and inventive prisoners of war in Europe.

In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I explore two remarkable firsthand accounts:

📚 The Colditz Story by P. R. Reid
📚 They Have Their Exits by Airey Neave

I also look back at the classic BBC television series Colditz, starring Jack Hedley, Edward Hardwicke, Robert Wagner, David McCallum, Bernard Hepton and Anthony Valentine.

This week on Stories Behind the Pages, Tim explores The Password Is Courage by John Castle.

The book tells the extraordinary true story of Sergeant Major Charles Coward, one of Britain's most remarkable prisoners of war during the Second World War. Captured in France in 1940, Coward became renowned for his daring escape attempts, fearless resistance to his captors, and the intelligence network he established inside German prisoner-of-war camps.

In this episode, Tim looks beyond the 1962 film to uncover the real man behind the legend...

This week on Stories Behind the Pages, Tim explores The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill.

Most people know the classic 1963 film starring Steve McQueen, but the real story began in the prisoner-of-war camp at Stalag Luft III. Written by former RAF prisoner Paul Brickhill, the book tells the extraordinary true story of the Allied airmen who spent months secretly planning and constructing a tunnel beneath the noses of their German captors.

In this episode, Tim looks beyond the Hollywood version to uncover the real...
