Welcome to The UMass IPM Fruit Loop! While Hawkeye does most of the talking, this is a co-creation of weekly contributions from Fruit Team Extension Educators Jon, Elizabeth and Matthew. Extension and Stockbridge School of Agriculture's Dr. Jamie Piñero contributes weekly insect updates and integrated pest management strategies. Stockbridge School of Agriculture's Dr. Daniel Cooley is the team's resident plant pathologist and Dr. Duane Greene gives us the skinny on all things thinning and growth regulated. When we are extra lucky, we get a guest to join us. The possibilities are endless!

A Bitter Battle- Unpacking the Colletotrichum Complexes Causing Bitter Rot in the Northeast U.S.
#1
01/25/2024

The UMass IPM Fruit Loop, led by the apple enthusiast Hawkeye, has returned with a focus on the bitter and intricate world of apple bitter rot. While bitter rot historically occurred sporadically in Massachusetts, it has become increasingly problematic. The pathogens responsible, part of the Colletotrichum complex, have a long history but were only recently identified as causal agents. In the Northeast, particularly in Massachusetts, C. fioriniae is the most commonly identified species causing fruit disease, alongside other pathogens affecting various plants. Understanding the appearance and progression of bitter rot lesions is crucial for accurate diagnosis, especially distinguishing them...

Tail end Trials; UMass IPM Fruit Loop Vol. 29 Episode 9
#9
06/02/2021

Thinning windows are closing, ascospores are giving up a last gasp and even insect pests are slowing their roll this week. We seem to be at the tail end of the mad spring rush and getting ready to enter into that summer holding pattern (but more on that as things develop). Keep your eyes peeled for straggling plum curculio and #getoutandscout to see if you incurred any primary scab infections that need to be managed to prevent a secondary outbreak. Plus, oh so very much more. Take a listen!

Under pressure; UMass IPM Fruit Loop Vol. 29 Episode 7

05/19/2021

Pressure to get out and manage multiple tree fruit considerations mounts as temperatures rise. Apple thinning remains high on the priority list. Plum curculio activity is picking up but has not yet hit peak while apple scab falls down on the to do list as a result of unfavorable infection conditions. Finally, fireblight is on the scene and ready to attack any open blossoms. All this and so much more in this newest episode of the UMass IPM Fruit Loop.

Listen in as Dr. Greene once again gives us the skinny on best thinning practices for this time of year. Dr. Piñero counsels us on weekly insect activity as well as insecticide options which is augmented by this week's guest article from MSU's Dr. John Wise.
