Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter would like to expand the capacity of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

But Carter and the Rebels aren’t stopping there. The university last week issued a request for proposal for a mixed-use development around the stadium similar in concept to The Battery Atlanta. The Battery surrounds Truist Park, the home of MLB’s Atlanta Braves. 

The Ole Miss iteration would feature retail, restaurants, office space, a hotel and even condos. Carter said the Rebels are exploring refurbishments to the stadium itself as well.

Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy didn’t offer any hints about their respective Ole Miss futures on Monday. 

The pair was among the players who visited with local media to open game week for the College Football Playoff. Chambliss said he’d consider all possibilities should he receive a waiver from the NCAA for an additional season of eligibility. 

A phone call circulated on social media last week of now-former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin claiming running backs coach Kevin Smith and Lacy, the Rebels’ star running back, would be following him to LSU.

Sudu Upadhyay is expecting a motivated Ole Miss Saturday against Tulane. 

The 6-seed Rebels (11-1) take on the 11-seed Green Wave in the first round of the College Football Playoff at 2:30 p.m. CT on TNT/HBO Max. They’ll be playing their first game without Lane Kiffin as head coach. Ole Miss defeated Tulane, 45-10, in the regular season.

But a lot has changed. Jon Sumrall will leave for Florida after the postseason. Ole Miss is now led by Pete Golding after Kiffin left for SEC rival LSU two weeks ago.

Golding took over for Lane Kiffin, who left for LSU. As a result, he’s been tasked with preparing Ole Miss for the College Football Playoff, all while recruiting, building out his staff and preparing for the transfer portal opening in January. 

Golding will eventually have to find long-term solutions for wide receivers coach, tight ends coach, linebackers coach and likely running backs coach — assuming Kevin Smith, as expected, leaves following the playoff run.
